    The onboard com puter offers you a great many functions which w ill make your

    journeys even safer and more of a pleasure.

    The GPS navigation system means that you do not have to consult printed m aps or

    search for directional road signs. The system guides you accurately to any destina-

    tion shown on the CD map.

    The radio, cassette and CD provide outstanding reception quality and a variety of

    entertainment fo r every taste, thus making even long journeys seem sho rt. The DSP

    sound system places you inside concert halls, jazz clubs or cathedrals - it repre-

    sents the ideal sound environment for every program.

    The onboard computer calculates data w hich are important for vehicle travel - from

    the estimated tim e of arrival to the average fuel consump tion and the cruising range

    with the available amount of fuel. It provides additional safety during driving - for

    example, by means of an acoustic warning tone so that you w ill not drive faster thanyou wish to.

    The cellular phone allow s others to reach you and provides you w ith the capability

    of establishing important contacts at all times.

    The independent ventilation system with programming capability ensures that a

    vehicle w ith a com fortable temperature will always await you.

    The input of a personalized code rounds out the anti-theft p rotection of your vehicle.We wish you an enjoyable driving experience.

    Notes on this Owner's M anual

    In order for you to enjoy your onboard

    com puter with a minimum of delay, thefirst chapter contains a description of

    the most frequently used functions of

    the onboard c omp uter, the navigation

    system and the radio.

    These examples explain how to use the

    simple menu guidance procedure, so

    that you gain rapid access to all the fa-cilities which the equipment offers.

    The onboard comp uter and the instruc-

    tions can be regarded as a single unit.

    Whenever the equipment guides you

    through its various functions, these de-

    tails are not repeated in the m anual.

    The same applies to self-explanatoryscreen displays.

    Since there are other methods of oper-

    ating the telephone as well as by w ay of

    the onboard computer, the complete

    telephone Ow ner's Manual is issued in

    a separate manual.

    For the "Emergency" function, there is

    also a separate set of Operating In-

    structions.

    You will find specific topics most

    quickly by referring to the "Index" at theend of the manual, while all information

    concerning the technology and the care

    of this device may be found in the chap-

    ter on "Technical features in detail." So

    that minor points w ill not interfere w ith

    your pleasure in using the onboard

    com puter, you will find a list of ques-tions which m ight arise in the chapter

    titled "What to do if ... ."

    Listening to the radio

    With each touch actuation, you can

    change between the AM and AM A

    (AUTOSTORE) AM mem ory areas.

    With each touch actuation, you can

    change betw een the FMI, FMII and FMA(AUTOSTORE) FM memory areas.

    There are 18 memory position for FM

    stations and 6 each for AM and AM A

    stations.

    These buttons are used for selection ofa specific CD or a specific CD t rack.

    Press. The radio program type w ill be

    displayed for a few seconds.

    Switching the RDS function on/off:

    In the FM frequency range, you can

    switch o n the RDS function so that the

    station name w ill be displayed.

    Search for a track or a station

    Call up the search function and select

    between:

    Manual, scan and automatic search

    mode.

    Search mode for radio and CD opera-tion.

    Music search for cassette listening.

    Changing modes

    You switch b etween radio, cassette and

    CD mod e each time the button is

    pressed briefly.

    The display on the screen changes be-

    tween the audio systems (radio, CD,cassette), the onboard computer and

    GPS navigation.

    The onboard computer's main menu

    appears You may now select from the

    displayed systems.

    Also returns you from each display or

    setting to the main menu. This is there-

    fore also imp ortant if you w ish to inter-

    rupt a setting.

    GPS navigation system:

    You wish to be navigated to the follow -

    ing destination:

    Beverly Hills, 455 N Rexford Dr

    Make all data entries when the ve-

    hicle is stationary. Com ply w ith

    road signs and t raffic regulations, even

    if the navigation system appears to sug-gest a different app roach. If you do not,

    you may be in violation of the law,

    thereby endangering vehicle occ u-

    pants and o ther highway users. Turn the onboard comp uter button

    until the desired function is high-

    lighted

    > Press to initiate the search

    > Turn until the desired station isobtained.

    The display goes out eight seconds af-

    ter the key has last been pressed. The

    mod ified settings are stored automati-

    cally in memory.

    Selecting a road speed at which the limit signal is heard

    An example illustrating the use of the

    onboard comp uter:

    You wish to drive on the freeway at

    a maximum speed of 54 m ph (approx.

    85 km/ h) and therefore wish to b e

    alerted w hen you have reached this

    speed (limit speed ).

    Make all entries when the car is

    standing still this w ill avoid en-

    dangering yourself and other road us-

    ers.

    Press to begin making entries.

    Turn, until the desired speed is shown.

    Press to sto re this value.

    A green square lights up next to " Limit."

    The limit is reached

    comes on with a red light

    > The speed limit w hich has been

    set appears briefly in the instrument

    cluster.

    You will not be alerted again to the fact

    that you have reached the speed limit

    until you have exceeded it by at least3 mph (5 km/h).

    Select "Settings"

    The main menu appears.

    Turn until "set" is highlighted.

    Press to obtain a d isplay of p ossible

    settings.

    You can adjust the language of the dis-play texts, the units of measure for dis-

    tance, fuel consump tion and temp era-

    ture, the time and the date and, w ith

    additional turns, the following settings:

    Memo means: Shortly before every full

    hour, you w ill hear three acoustic alerts.

    Audio+OB C: The radio and onboard

    com puter displays appear on the com -

    puter at the same time.

    OBC display means: You can determine

    whether the outside temperature or the

    arrival time will be displayed on the

    screen.Color set: You may chose a color set

    from between three alternatives for the

    on-sc reen displays.

    Day/night: You can activate or deacti-

    vate the automatic d ay/night switching.

    SW 2- 1/XX means: Software status:

    generation 2, variant 1. "XX" ind icates

    the current version.

    You can change all the settings on dis-

    play. Changing the date will illustrate

    the procedure which is always used.

    Example: To change the date

    Turn until "Date" is highlighted.

    Press to confirm the entry.Turn until "set" is highlighted.

    Press in order to b egin the setting p ro-

    cedure.

    The last time you press to store, the

    date will be imported.

    You can also choose the order in which

    You can select the follow ing radio, cas-

    sette and CD functions in a safe and

    highly convenient w ay without removing

    your hand from the steering w heel.

    Changing to the next stationor track

    To reach the next station in the selected

    frequency band or the next m usic track:

    > Press briefly.

    Fast search mode (radio) or fast for-

    ward/reverse:

    > Press and hold the key.

    Special feature of cassette replay:

    The next music track is only recognized

    after a period o f silence lasting at least

    four seconds. To stop the search if nec-

    essary:

    > Press the key again b riefly.

    Special feature of radio:

    You can select in advance w hether to

    jump to the next possib le stat ion or the

    next stored station:

    Press and hold until PRES ON o r PRES

    OFF appears on the sc reen (short for

    PRESET stored).

    PRES ON:Change betw een stored stations.

    PRES OFF:

    Jumps to the next station.

    The GPS navigation system m eans that

    you do not have to consult printed

    maps during the trip. It is therefore a

    fundamentally impo rtant contribution toroad safety.

    However, for your personal safety and

    that of all other road users, please com -

    ply w ith the following safety precau-

    tions.

    Make all data entries when the ve-hicle is stationary. Comply with

    road signs and traffic regulations, even

    if the navigation system appears to sug-

    gest a different app roach. If you do not,

    you may be in violation of the law,

    thereby endangering vehicle occ u-

    pants and other highw ay users.Do not place metallic objects (umbrel-

    las, for instance) on the rear window

    shelf. Such objects may deflect the

    GPS aerial signal and cause the naviga-

    tion system to operate inaccurately. Depending on the data stored on

    your map, you may be able to enter ahouse numb er for certain streets. The

    appropriate display will appear if this

    is possible

    > You can overwrite street names if you

    wish to b e guided to another street in

    the same tow n

    > Instead of street names with streetnumbers, you can also enter the in-

    tersection of tw o streets as a destina-

    tion

    > You can clear the last entry with the

    "Delete" function.

    You don't know the tow n or thestreet well

    In this situation, the "Index" will help

    you with the entry of the town and the

    street. It will display all of the towns

    which are stored or the streets of a spe-

    cific town.

    You can limit the numb er of names

    listed in the disp lay if you first enter one

    or more letters and then select the "In-dex" function.

    Once you have found the desired infor-

    mation in the " Index", select it it w ill

    be imported into the destination guid-

    ance system.

    You are looking for a specificdestination, but do not know theaddress

    For instance, you may be looking for a

    hotel, a restaurant or garage, the near-

    est BM W center, a tourist attraction or a

    hospital ... but you don't have an exact

    address.

    1 Enter the desired town

    2 Select "Information"3 Select either "Info on destination"

    or "Info on current location." A list

    of interesting destinations w ill be

    displayed

    4 Select the desired destination

    ("Hotel")

    5 Select a hotel from the list.

    Information on the ho tel will be

    displayed.

    Turn to select the address.

    Press in order for the destination

    guidance system to import the ad-dress.

    Select "Functions" in order to

    receive a display of add itional in-

    formation. Turn and highlight "Sc ale." If you

    do not make the subsequent en-

    tries within the next four seconds,

    the process must be repeated> Press to c onfirm the entry

    > Turn until the desired scale is

    displayed

    > Press to enter this value.

    Streets are displayed on the screen

    only to a scale of 1:40 000 (corre-

    sponds tog

    miles in the settingsw indow ). If a larger scale is se-

    lected, you cannot select the " save

    destination" function.

    5 To narrow down the destination with

    the c ross-hairs:

    > Turn to select "Cursor"

    > Press to confirm the entry

    > Turn and choose the horizontal

    point o f intersection

    > Press to retain this value

    > Turn to choose the vertical point o f

    intersection> Press to retain this value.

    6 Transfer to the destination guidance

    system:

    Turn until "save destination" is high-

    lighted.Press to import the destination.

    The map moves across the moni-

    tor screen as soon as the cursor

    reaches the edge. Travel on highw ays: Freeways and

    major thoroughfares are selected

    w ith preference

    > Secondary roads: Freeways are

    avoided whenever possible

    > Fastest connection: A c omb ination

    which optimizes time and route

    > Shortest connection: Route optimi-

    zation w ithout consideration for

    time.

    Route planning w ill be executed in

    the navigation system based on

    fixed guidelines. These guidelines de-

    pend on road characteristics which arestored on the CD map. As a result, the

    route recommended by the system may

    be d ifferent from the one your personal

    experience m ight suggest. Select " Instruction" and press for ap-

    proximately one second .

    A brief press repeats the last route in-

    formation.

    Selecting "Instruction" activates thevoice output once again.

    M enu item: Route map

    During destination guidance, the sys-

    tem can display a map showing the

    planned route.

    In order to display the route map d uring

    destination guidance:

    > Turn until "Route map" is highlighted

    > Press to confirm the selection.The route map appears in the display

    automatically if you enter an area during

    destination guidance which is not regis-

    tered completely on the map CD.

    Altering the scale

    > Turn and highlight "Scale." If you do

    not m ake the entries w ithin the next

    four seconds, the process must be

    repeated

    > Press to confirm the entry> Turn until the desired sc ale is

    displayed

    > Press to enter th is value.

    The map section w ill change after a few

    seconds.

    Altering display direction

    With a scale of less than g mile, you

    may select the alignment o f the map as

    being either due North or set accordingto your direction of travel.

    > Turn and highlight "M ap po sitioning"

    > Press to c onfirm the entry

    > Select the desired d irection.

    Suppressing voice output

    You can suppress voice outp ut w hile

    the route map is displayed:

    > Turn and highlight "Instruction"

    > Press and hold for approx. one

    second

    Pressing briefly will repeat the last

    route information

    > Selecting "Instruction" activates the

    voice output once again.

    Displaying the route list

    During destination guidance, you may

    call up a list of towns and roads. This

    list is based on the route recom mendedby the navigation system.

    The distances remaining to be traveled

    on each ind ividual road are also dis-

    played.

    In order to display the route list during

    destination guidance:

    > Turn and highlight "Information"

    > Press to c onfirm the selection

    > Turn until "Route list" is highlighted

    > Press to call up a disp lay of the list

    > Turn in order to sc roll in the list.

    M enu item: New route

    You can quit the navigation system dur-

    ing destination guidance and deviate

    from p lanned sections of the route. Youcan state how m any miles you wish to

    travel before returning to the original

    route.

    > Turn and highlight "New route"> Press to c onfirm the entry

    > Select the desired d istance.

    The system w ill return you automatically

    to the new route at the next opportu-

    nity.

    You can call up the c urrent location of

    your vehicle, or a road m ap w ith the ve-hicle's location may be d isplayed.

    To call up the car's current location,

    select:

    > "Information"

    > "Vehicle position."

    For the road map, select:

    > "Information"

    > "Vehicle position"

    > "Street map."

    This function can also be useful if you

    have not entered a destination. It en-

    ables you to monitor the route you havetaken so far.

    With scales of less than g miles, you

    can select w hether the map is aligned

    Correcting the c ar's current location is

    recomm ended only in exceptional cir-

    cumstances.After transport on a car-carrying train,

    for example, the GPS receiver requires

    a few m inutes to find the current posi-

    by entering the car's current location.

    In order to enter the current location,

    select:

    > "Vehicle position."

    M enu item: Destination memory

    The system can store up to 50 ad-

    dresses, which c an be called up directly

    as destination entries for the navigationsystem (see page27).

    > Select "Address book"

    > Select "Enter address"

    > Enter the data you have retrieved.

    The name is not needed for destina-

    tion guidance or for storing in the list.

    Because of storage capacity, it is lim-

    ited to 10 characters

    > Once you have entered the com plete

    address, store it in the list by press-

    ing "enter."

    Storing current location

    You can transfer the car's current posi-

    tion directly to the destination list and

    add a name provided that the car is onpart of the street network recorded on

    the map.

    > Select "Ad dress book"

    > Select "Enter current car position"

    > Add a name if desired

    > Select "enter."

    Deleting addresses

    > Select "Ad dress book"

    navigation information in relation to

    other audio sources.

    You can also vary the volume using the

    rotary knob on the radio. Refer to

    page10.On every map CD, road maps of a

    country or a section of a country are

    When your navigation system indicates

    Calling up a station stored inmemory

    First select the correct frequency band.

    Then select the station using memorykeys 1 to 6.

    The only requirement is that stations

    have previously been stored.

    PTY (Program Type) inquiry

    Some radio stations broadcast their

    program type (such as news, spo rts,

    jazz, etc.) via the RDS (Rad io BroadcastData System).

    Call up PTY:

    Press - the p rogram type w ill be dis-

    played for a few seconds.If the specific station does not provide

    PTY recognition, "NO PTY" will appear

    in the display.

    Automatic PTY display:

    Press and hold until "PTY-AUTO" ap-pears in the disp lay.

    The program type w ill be d isplayed au-

    tomatically for a few seconds every

    time the station is changed, or every

    time the station changes its program

    type.

    Switching off PTY:

    Press and hold until "PTY-M AN" ap-pears in the disp lay.

    PTY is also used for w arnings in

    the event of a catastrophic occur-

    rence. If the station broadcasts this pro-

    gram type, "ALERT" appears in the dis-

    play. Select the frequency band

    > Select the station

    > Keep the desired memory key

    pressed in until the station is heard

    again after a brief interrupt ion.

    If the memory key was already occu-

    pied b y a stored station, the station last

    stored is called up b riefly. If you then

    release the key imm ediately, the storing

    process w ill be canceled and the sta-tion previously stored in m emory w ill

    not be lost otherwise the old station

    will be replaced by the new station se-

    lection.

    Automatic

    The "Autostore" function stores the six

    stations in the FMA and AM A reception

    ranges which have the strongest recep-tion signals.

    The stations which are already

    stored in this reception range

    are deleted as soon as you call up

    "Autostore." use C60, C90 or special auto-cas-

    settes

    > remove the cassettes from the vehi-

    cle in extremely cold o r hot w eather

    (be low 15 F/106 or above 104 F/

    406)

    > protect the cassettes against expo-

    sure to direct sunlight or d irt and

    dust.

    Listening to cassettes

    Switch on the radio.

    Push a cassette into the slot or, if there

    is already one in the slot,

    press on the right until "TAPE A" is dis-

    played.

    Noise suppression

    Press until you receive the best sound

    quality. Selection is made betw een

    Dolby off, Dolby B and C.

    As a result of its three-dimensional

    sound simulation and equalizer func-

    tions, Digital Sound Processing (DSP)

    provides the op timum in listening enjoy-ment.

    It is only operational when the radio is

    switched on.

    Follow ing adjustments or after memory

    items are called up, the system is can-

    celed automatically.

    Switching on/off

    > Select "DSP" from the main menu

    > Select "sw itch on" or "sw itch off."

    Sampling and selecting

    > Select "Demo"

    > To accept one of the sampled set-

    tings (Concert Hall, Jazz Club, Cathe-

    dral):

    Press while the demonstration is run-

    ning.

    None of the other sound samples which

    have been adjusted can be selected di-

    rectly. If the demonstration is inter-rupted during this time, the settings re-

    main as they were before the demon-

    stration.

    You can configure sound memo ries 1

    to 3 individually:

    > Make adjustments and store them by

    pressing the b utton for each setting.

    Concert Hall, Jazz Club and Cathedral

    are fixed mem ories which you cannot

    change.

    If one of the spatial controllers

    (room , hall surround) is set to 0,

    the second is also set automatically

    to 0. As soon as you change the con-

    troller which was set to 0, the other re-

    turns to its previous setting. How ever,

    this previous setting w ill be deleted if

    you quit the adjustment proc edure with

    both of the controllers at the zero set-

    ting. Select "M emo"> Select sound m emory.

    at the left-rear in the luggage comp art-

    ment.The CD magazine holds up to 6 CDs.

    Operating temperatures

    Operate the CD c hanger only at

    temperatures of 327 (06) to

    1407 (+ 606). Operation outside thisrange may lead to malfunctions.

    Even if the unit is sw itched off, it should

    not be exposed to tem peratures out-

    side a range of 137 ( 256) to 1857

    (+ 856). Do not w rite on CDs or attach labels

    to them.

    To open: Push the door to the right.

    Press the key: The magazine will slideout and can then be removed.

    them only at the edge and do not touch

    prevent the engine from being started if

    the cod e is not entered. When you have

    activated this cod e, you will be

    promp ted to enter it at ignition key

    position 1.After the cod e is activated, it will always

    be in force until the next engine start

    only.

    emergency deactivation is p ossible.
