About the workshop

The workshop is planned during the semester break for First year students, with

an intention to introduce a modern engineering tool, ‘LabVIEW and Multisim’. The

workshop shall introduce the participants to the tools and enable them to continue use

this tool further during their engineering program. There was no registration fee for the

participants. The workshop was planned in association with National Instruments, as

part of the Industry-Institute-Interaction, and in association with the BMSCE-IEEE

student Branch.

National Instruments supported the event through:

i) Arranging for student version of LabVIEW software for their individual

systems

ii) Permission to take the LabVIEW examination (CLAD) FREE within the

next THREE months

iii) One Expert lecture from National Instruments

In addition to the above support, TWO students were given the opportunity to

have Hands-on training on LabVIEW Core-1 and Core-2, at their campus from 2nd to 5th

June.

The resource persons for the workshop are:

i) Sri S Danabal, Academic Manager, National Instruments

ii) Dr B Kanmani, Professor and Head, TCE, BMSCE

iii) Shreenivas B, Asst. Professor, TCE, BMSCE

iv) Prasanna Kumar M K, Asst. Professor, TCE, BMSCE

The Principal, Dr K Mallikharjuna Babu, addressed the students, and briefed them about the innovations being brought out in the curriculum design through the introduction of the self-study component in few integrated courses. Through the introduction of the self-study component in the curriculum, the actual contact hours in the classroom/laboratory is reduced giving students ample time to explore their passion related to the courses they register for. This develops the ability to engage in ‘self-study’ or ‘independent-study’, based on the guidelines prescribed by the course instructor. This component may lead to demonstration of a small project, presentation of a seminar, submission of a technical report etc. The THREE years the student engages in ‘self-study’, shall then lead him to be a ‘Life-Long-Learner’, one of the essential attributes for a successful professional career.

Sri S Danabal, Academic Manager, National Instruments, Bangalore, addressed the

students. He commenced his talk with the need to develop: Knowledge, Skill and

Attitude through Engineering Education. He mentioned that efficient use of LabVIEW

can lead to the following:

i) Improvement in Grades

ii) Implement good design projects

iii) Pursue higher studies

iv) Improve skills for better placements

v) Overall better engineering graduate

vi) Develop entrepreneurship skills

vii) Tackle assignments

viii)Teach peer group

ix) Share information

x) Help faculty in research

xi) Look at industry problems

He then introduced them to the technological advances in the domain of Cyber Physical

Systems, the Internet of Things, Smart Cities, the reducing gap between technology and

the human being. These technological advances revolve around:

i) Moore’s Law

ii) Metcalfe’s Law

iii) Battery life

iv) wireless communication

v) sensors

He concluded his presentation with the list of Industries and Academic Institutions using

LabVIEW.
