ABOUT ⬜ Bluetooth is a radio frequency specification for

short range , point to point and point to multi point voice and data transfer.

⬜ Bluetooth was named for the 10th century Viking king ,Harald Blatand (A.K.A ,Bluetooth) who peacefully united all the tiny island kingdoms of Denmark , southern Sweden, and southern Norway into one country

⬜ In keeping with its namesake , Bluetooth ,the new low-cost radio technology , is designed to unite or connect all different types of devices to effectively work as one.

Page 3: BLUETOOTH _TECHNOLOGY

HOW IT WORKS⬜ The technology of Bluetooth centers around a

9mm * 9mm microchip, which functions as a low cost and short range radio link. Bluetooth Technology provide a 10 meter personal bubble that support simultaneous transmission of both voice and data for multiple devices. Up to 8devices can be connected in a piconet, and up to 10 piconet can exist within the 10 meter bubble. Each piconet support up to 3 simultaneous full duplex voice devices.

BLUETOOTH CHARACTERISTICS

⬜ It separates the frequency band into hops. This spread spectrum is used to hop from one channel to another , which adds a strong layer of security.

⬜ Up to eight devices can be networked in a piconet.

⬜ Signals can be transmitted through walls and briefcases, thus eliminating the need for line-of-sight.

⬜ Devices do not need to be pointed at each other, as signals omni-directional.

⬜ Governments worldwide regulate it , so it is possible to utilize the same standard wherever one travels.

ADVANTAGES OF BLUETOOTH

⬜ No line of site restrictions as with IrDA⬜ Power consumption makes integrated in battery

powered devices very practical.⬜ 2.4 GHz radio frequency ensures worldwide

operability.⬜ Tremendous momentum not only within the

computer industry but also other industries like cellular telephones and transportation.

DISADVANTAGES⬜ Battery Use: This occurs mostly on your cell

phone but also occurs in other technology such as music players. You're using up more battery power when you leave your Bluetooth enabled on your phone all day. To disregard all this, the best thing that you can possibly do is disable it once you are completed with the transfer. It only takes a few seconds to enable and disable so it wouldn't hurt to disable it once you are done using it.

Continue………⬜ Bluetooth Internet: Throughout all devices, when

using Bluetooth internet , the connection can sometimes run very slow so Bluetooth internet is not highly suggested for all cases.

⬜ As you can notice that there are quite a bit of advantages and fewer disadvantages. Overall, Bluetooth is a great thing to be using on all your devices that supports it. You can do so much with it and includes cutting all the cords attached to your devices

A piconet is a computer network which links a wireless user group of devices using Bluetooth technology protocols. A piconet consists of two or more devices occupying the same physical channel (synchronized to a common clock and hopping sequence). It allows one master device to interconnect with up to seven active slave devices.

Page 11: BLUETOOTH _TECHNOLOGY

A piconet is formed when at least two devices, such as a portable PC and a cellular phone, connect. A piconet can support up to eight devices. When a piconet is formed, one device acts as the master while the others act as slaves for the duration of the piconet connection.

Bluetooth Architecture

Radio front end:- Defines charecterstics of RF, frequency bands, channel arrengments and receiver sesitivity level.

Logical link control and adaptation protocol(L2CAP):-

For trasporting bigger data products to higer layer.

SDP:- The Service Discovery Protocol (SDP) allows a device to discover services offered by other devices, and their associated parameters.

Page 17: BLUETOOTH _TECHNOLOGY

RFCOMM:-Provides Transport capablites for high level services.RFCOMM provides a simple reliable data stream to the user, similar to TCP. It is used directly by many telephony related profiles as a carrier for AT commands, as well as being a transport layer for OBEX over Bluetooth.

LMP:- Link manager protocol piconet, master slave role assignments and link configuration.

Security configration by device authentication using secret key.
