| This Is A High Fidelity Recording |

There's an old saying among magicians: “Anyone can

do this trick in ten minutes . . . after a couple of years

practice!" The magic of Ivory Joe Hunter's music wasn't

accomplished overnight, as some prefer to believe. . .

as those who seem to suddenly skyrocket to public atten-

tion don’t really do so, but usually arrived at their goals

after years of hard work and constant training.

Before we go any further, let’s understand that the name

“Ivory Joe” is not an adopted name for entertainment

purposes... it is his real name. He was named Ivory

Joe October 10, 1911, when he was born in Kirbyville,

Texas ... one of a family of fourteen children.

Both of Ivory Joe’s parents were musical and he gained

an understanding, and liking, for music from them before

they died when he was eleven years old. Fortunately his

godmother, who took him into her home, continued his

training and the youngster grew up with only one ambi-

tion, to go into show business. At the age of twelve,

Ivory Joe was producing backyard shows, using his

brothers and sisters and neighborhood kids as the per-

formers. At that time he determined to follow show busi-

ness, but to never work with any band but his own.

When he felt he had sufficiently learned the piano, he

began to lead small jazz combos and followed this side of

music for several years. His combo work took him into

many night spots on the Wes: Coast and brought about

several tours of the South. Salaries were modest, and

the big-time locations and the big-time income were al-

ways “just around the corner.” Rather than become dis-

couraged, he continued his musical study and almost

constantly sought to create innovations in style.

Refusing to limit himself to one style or type of music,

Ivory Joe turned to ballads, calypso songs and even folk

songs to augment his already perfected blues style. His

greatest success came in the South and the majority of

IVORY JOE HUNTER SINGS Sixteen of Fis

his income from record sales and personal appearances

still comes from that part of the country.

In 1950, Ivory Joe Hunter made his first smash hit. He

recorded “I Almost Lost My Mind.” The record was a

quick success in the South, and by the end of the year

hundreds of thousands of copies had been sold through-

out the United States. At last, he was nationally famous.

And, though some have said this was another ‘‘overnight

success” ... if was, as you've read, merely the attain-

ment of a goal set early in life.

Despite Ivory Joe's rise to fame, he remains unaffected

and natural. He is the same personable entertainer who

worked in small combos for many years before the public

recognized his talent. His off hours are spent watching

television, relaxing and pursuing various hobbies. An

expert photographer, he makes unusually good motion

pictures.

In this album you will find the earlier work of Ivory

Joe Hunter. The songs included herein give the listener

an insight into the style of Ivory Joe as it matured to

bring his name to the top of the entertainment list. The

unusual style of ‘Jealous Hee t,"" "Guess Who" and “Wait-

ing In Vain" contrasted with the bluesy mood on “I Quit

My Pretty Mama’ and “Changing Blues” illustrate the

treatment so often enjoyed by his many fans.

And... to his credit, in more than twenty years of

show business, Ivory Joe has never worked in any other

band than his own. He makes his home with his wife

in California, where Mrs. Hunter acts as his booking agent

and manager which is no small task considering the

demands of his ever increasing popularity.

Since his first hit records, his following recordings have

continued as big sellers and this album is presented as a

representative sampling of the style and technique that

carried Ivory Joe Hunter to the top and where he remains

as one of this country’s most popular entertainers.
