CHURCHES

The Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

ASSISTANCE NEEDED AGAIN: Please make sure to read the letter from Bishop Monforton inserted in today’s bulletin. It concerns a special collection for the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma which we will take up next weekend. I realize we just took up a collection for the people who were in need from Hurricane Harvey, but the need is just as great for all those affected by Hurricane Irma. If you are able to help once again, please put your donation in an envelope marked “Hurricane Irma” and place it in the collection basket (along with your weekly church envelope) when it is passed during Mass next weekend. Thank you for your kind generosity in helping those in need.

LECTURE ABOUT LIGHT ON THE DARK PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURE: This Thursday, Sept. 28, from 12:00pm to 1:00pm, there will be a lecture on “Light on the Dark Passage of Scripture”, by Dr. John Bergsma. Dr. Bergsma is an Old Testament Scripture scholar and teacher of the Old Testament at Franciscan University. The lecture will be held at the YWCA, 320 N. Fourth St., Steubenville. It is free of charge. I encourage anyone who may be able to, to attend. Why not spend your lunch hour learning more from this wonderful presentation?

DIOCESAN YOUTH CONFERENCE: I am strongly encouraging all the youth in our parishes between the ages of 7and 12 to attend the diocesan youth conference that will be held on Sunday, Oct. 15, at St. Mary’s School, in Marietta, Ohio. To register for the conference, please visit http://dyc2017.eventbrite.com. Click on the green “tickets” button, choose “group” and type in “Wintersville Parishes.” Then put in the number of tickets you need. The cost for the day is $20.00 per person or $35.00 per family (up to 3 members with each additional member costing $10.00) and includes lunch. Please register by Sep. 29. Our diocese is providing transportation to this event on a first come – first serve basis. We will depart from Catholic Central High School at a time to be announced later. You may reserve a seat

on the bus when you get your tickets online If you have any questions, please contact Alyson Radford at 740-282-3631. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate your faith with other young people from the diocese!

MARRIAGE ANNIVERSARIES: Each year Bishop Monforton offers special Masses to recognize significant marriage anniversaries of the faithful in the diocese. This year, in an effort to support younger couples, those celebrating their 10th or 20th wedding will also be invited. Therefore, this year’s celebration for our portion of the diocese will be held on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 5:30pm, at Holy Family Church. Those encouraged to participate are those celebrating the following marriage anniversaries: 10th, 20th, 25th, 30th, 35th, 40th, 45th, 50th, 55th, 60th, and 60+ this year. In order to register, please contact the rectory to get a form and mail it to the Office of Marriage at the chancery, no later than Oct. 16. I encourage all of our parishioners who are celebrating these significant anniversaries to attend the Mass. Marriage is an important sacrament, and we need to support it as much as possible these days.

There comes a time when you meet someone, and you just want to make them smile for the rest of your life. Unknown

Please remember in your prayers the intentions of our Holy Father, Pope Francis

OCTOBER (Workers and the Unemployed)

That all workers may receive respect and protection of their rights, and that the unemployed may receive the

opportunity to contribute to the common good.

If you turn and do what is right and just, you shall preserve your life.

(pertaining to today’s first reading: Ezekiel 18:25-28)

What does it take to be a good person? We can begin by not doing dreadful things: destroying, stealing, deceiving, and causing harm. Yet it’s not enough simply to refrain from evil deeds. A good person is defined not only by what he or she doesn’t do, but also by what they choose to do. That part is more challanging. Resisting evil requires mere discipline. Doing good involves discernment, will and initiative.

Too often, I do what’s neither bad nor good. Mostly I do nothing, going about as if my life only concerns me. That in itself is a moral choice: doing nothing fails to promote the agenda of the good. Living for myself, I miss oppor- tunities to be kind to a stranger, to pray for a friend, to lend emotional support, to listen to a different opinion, to admit I was wrong, to write my state representative about an important issue, to share what I have with someone in need. (Alice Camille)

Have you been a good person today?

“Jesus is happy to come with us, as truth is happy to be spoken, as life to be lived, as light to be lit, as love is to be loved, as joy to be given,’ as peace to be spread.” St. Francis of Assisi

DONUT SUNDAY: Will be held THIS Sunday, Sept. 24, after the 11:00am Mass in upper Sargus Hall. ALL parishioners are welcome and encouraged to share fellowship and food with our parish community.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL MINISTRY: Our general registration for Thanksgiving, Christmas and 2018 will be Friday, Oct. 13, between 9:00am and 2:00pm, at our pantry. Registration is open to all residents of Wintersville and Bloomingdale and to any parishioner of our churches who are in need, regardless of where the parishioner lives. For information regarding registration, please call 740-264-9547, leave a message and we will return your call. We thank everyone for your generous support throughout this year: your monthly envelope, the cases and cases of food and water, the bags of food in baskets at our churches’ doors, the brown bags you leave in our recycle box to be used for packing, and all your prayers and words of encouragement. You are a true gift, a bright light so needed in this world!

GRIEFSHARE SESSION #6: “WHY?” is the one word we all ask God. It will be the topic discussed at our next meeting on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 10:00am – 12:00pm, in lower Sargus Hall. Discover why God wants you to share your feelings with him. Learn how to listen to what God has to say TO YOU and YOU ALONE about your questions. Find out just how God does answer us. GRIEFSHARE SESSION #7: “GUILT AND ANGER” This session will be on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10:00am – 12:00pm. Grieving the loss of a loved one can raise these two emotions to heights we never expected in our lives. Are you willing to delve deep within your heart and discover how to deal with false guilt; how to grieve conflicted relationships; and how to handle grief-related anger? Then please join us for this session.

OLL CWC: The holidays are quickly approaching and the ladies are once again preparing to make their nut rolls and pumpkin rolls. Anyone interested in helping prepare the rolls or in donating toward the supplies for baking is asked to call Irene Rozsa at 264-4541 or Carol Long at 264-4812.

BLS CWC: Annual raffle tickets are now available for you to pickup at the front entrance of the church. The proceeds will benefit our St. Vincent de Paul Ministry. PLEASE pick up your tickets and any others that you can deliver because by doing so, you will save us a considerable amount on postage. Remember, the CWC has to pay first-class postage. Thank you and good luck! Anyone wishing to donate items for our annual raffle baskets may drop them off at the parish office during regular hours (M-F 8:30am – 3:30pm). Suggestions may be new or unused kitchenware, home items, holiday items, cleaning supplies, nonperishable food or canned items, gloves, scarves, jewelry, etc. We thank you for all your support!!

Work schedule is as follows: DAY CREW: 9:00am – 12:00noon on Monday, Sept. 25, and Wednesday, Sept. 27.

NIGHT CREW: 6:00 – 9:00pm on Tuesday, Sept. 26 and Thursday, Sept. 28. Once again, we will be selling FROZEN ITEMS ONLY! Sale dates and times to be announced later. Any questions, please contact Sandy Talarico at 740-264-4065.
