MAY 24, 2020………...Seventh Sunday of Easter……….Memorial Day Sunday

John 17:1-11

As the seventh and last Sunday of Easter, the Purple Season, before the festival of

Pentecost, Red Season, and the beginning of the long, Green Season, Jesus’ words

are more than a fitting finish. “And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in

the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you

have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.”

It is perhaps, one of the most relevant and truthful definitions of what Pentecost is

supposed to be as disciples of Christ. Jesus is no longer in the world. The incarna-

tion is over. Jesus has been resurrected. He ascended to the Father from when He

came. But we are still in the world, Jesus’ works are now in our hands, and Jesus is

counting on us to be His presence in the wake of His absence.

CALVARY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Pastoral Statement from PCUSA:

“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place” (Acts 2:1).

So begins the account of the gift of the Holy Spirit to the church in the book of Acts.

As we approach the day of Pentecost in the year 2020, we understand that it may not

be possible for the members of our congregation to be “all together in one place” this

year. While some restrictions are being lifted in some places and for some people, the

ongoing threat of the Covid-19 global pandemic will require that we return to church

in a way that is measured and mindful of the needs of the most vulnerable among us.

While some may begin to attend public worship in person, we know that some will

need to continue to worship at home for some time.

We give thanks, then, for the promise of our faith—that the Lord God will bless and

keep us, the risen Christ is with us, and the Holy Spirit connects us with believers

near and far. We take comfort and inspiration from the example of the earliest believ-

ers, who “spent much time together in the temple” and “broke bread at home … with

glad and generous hearts” (Acts 2:46). As we anxiously track the news in these

times—with numbers of new cases, numbers of persons who have died, and numbers

of those who are recovering—we remember the good news of the gospel: “And day by

day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved” (Acts 2:47).

As this congregation begins to resume public activities, please know that we will do

so through a careful process of discussion and discernment, with an abundance of

caution and concern for those who are most vulnerable, upon consideration of the

best scientific knowledge at our disposal, in the spirit of constant prayer, and with full

trust in the grace of Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy

Spirit.

We may make mistakes along the way. There will surely be awkward moments as we

adjust to new protocols and practices. There will be times of frustration, disappoint-

ment, and grief. We will have countless opportunities to exercise the spiritual gifts of

patience, kindness, gentleness, and self-control.

But there will also be blessings. There will be wonderful surprises, great celebrations,

and moments of deep satisfaction. We will get to see glimpses of the new thing God is

doing, even now. We will have opportunities to savor the spiritual gifts of love, joy,

peace, generosity, and faithfulness.

Let us be faithful, then—to God and to one another—as we receive the gifts and work through the challenges of this time in the life of our congregation and world. Let us be guided by the Word, responsive to the Spirit, and open to the grace of God. Let us re-member that nothing can separate us from God’s love in Christ Jesus.

CALVARY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Calvary’s Plan to Re-open May 31, 2020 (The Day of Pentecost)

With prayerful consideration and understanding that each member of our congrega-

tion must make choices that are comfortable for them, Calvary Session voted to re-

open our Worship Services on May 31, 2020. We will have a deep cleaning of the

church on May 29 provided by Top Notch cleaning service. We will move all paper

items (hymnals and Bibles) to Trinity Chapel to store for future use. A projector and

screen will be used to provide the bulletin for the order of Worship. We have also

made the following provisions to help keep our members as safe as possible:

It is recommended that all entering the church please wear a mask.

Ask that all providing service to others wear gloves.

Ask that all participating use proper social distancing and follow guidelines for

entry and seating provided by our ushers.

Ask that all entering allow their name to be recorded (optional) so that they may

be notified in the event of an illness outbreak among those participating.

Ask that the congregation leave tithes and offerings in a plate near the sanctuary

doors.

Ask that the congregation pick up the pre-packaged Communion elements upon

entry of the sanctuary on June 7.

We will continue to provide fellowship and worship opportunities through our news-

letter, website and Facebook page.
