NAPLAN 2017 Year 3 and Year 5 The NAPLAN results will be sent home today. Congratulations to all the students who have tried their hardest in the National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy. If you are the parent of a student in Years 3 or 5 you will be receiving an individual report of your child’s results for the tests they sat in May. These tests are in the key areas of literacy and numeracy provide parents and educators with a snapshot of how students are progressing — individually, as part of their school community and as a nation. NAPLAN results enable parents and teachers to see how students are progressing, not just within their class but also against national standards. The front page of the student report provides some general information about the tests and an explanation of how to read the report. The second and third pages have diagrams that show your child’s results for each area (numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation) on the common assessment scale. The common assessment scale has ten bands and is used to report results for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students. The diagrams in the student report also show the range for the middle 60 per cent of students, the national average result and the national minimum standard for each year level. Reports in some states and territories show the school average. The final page of the report has a table that provides a brief description of the skills students have typically demonstrated in the tests at each band. PARENT INSERVICE In the last week of this Term, we will hold a parent inservice to explain school and student performance. The Year 3 and Year 5 teachers will be in attendance to answer questions and explain the results. This will be an opportunity to ask questions about NAPLAN. TRIAL NAPLAN ONLINE In week 9, the Year 3 and Year 5 will participate in the trial for NAPLAN online in readiness for 2018. This is testing the school and the Department’s readiness for these assessments to be completed online. LEARNING LINKS PRESENTATION for PARENTS Friday 25 th August 9:15 This Friday Learning Links will be doing a presentation to parents at the BLC meeting (Blacktown Learning Community). Learning Links is a not-for-profit organisation for specific learning difficulties including dyslexia. They will be talking to parents 9:15 to 10:15 at Seven Hills Nth (45 Beethoven St Seven Hills) For further information please ring Mrs Peel. If you are interested, please ring BWPS by Wednesday 23 rd August and let us know for catering purposes. BLACKTOWN FESTIVAL of PERFORMING ARTS (BfoPA) Today the senior choir and senior dance will attend a full day’s rehearsal in readiness for the night performance. We wish them all the best and congratulate them for representing Blacktown West at the Blacktown Festival. STAGE 3 CAMP It’s arrived. Only one more day before Stage 3 head out on a 3 day excursion to Bathurst, Jenolan Caves and the goldfields. We wish them all the best for a great trip. Remember to pack warm jackets and warm gloves. They may even be lucky enough to see snow. One thing for sure, it will be cold! All campers need to be at school no later than 7:00am on Wednesday please.

DEBATERS Congratulations to the debating team. They have done well to balance all of their commitments. They competed well in their last debate and the adjudicator commented on their significant growth, even though they lost by a small margin. They have reached the semi-finals and will compete in their next debate at Blacktown West on Wednesday 30

th August.

EXTERNAL VALIDATION Once every five years, each school will undergo an External Validation of the evidence provided by the school. This evidence provides a snapshot of the school in its pursuit of excellence: a clear description of the key elements of high quality practice across three domains of learning, teaching and leading. Blacktown West’s turn to be externally validated is set down for next week: Tuesday 29

th August.

PARENT INSERVICE We will be running the next Parent Inservice, Thursday of next week, (31

st August). The processes of addition and

subtraction will be explained along with games to deepen your child’s understanding. All parents of Kindergarten, Year 1 2 and 3 are invited to join the session in the Library- Thursday 31

st 9:00 to 10:00 followed by morning tea and question

time.

BOOK FAIR

The book fair was open last week for our school community to

purchase books and raise some money for our school library. I

am proud to say that we sold over $4000 worth of books and

supplies! The money that we raised from this book fair will be

used to purchase new books for the library. So keep coming to

visit the library to see all the exciting new books!

I would also like to say thank you to everyone who helped in

the running of the book fair and thank you as well to the

families who generously donated money for new library books.

WALKATHON

Congratulations to all the students for the walking and then to the families for their support with the walkathon. This is our best effort ever. We have raised $2,331! Congratulations KD who returned the greatest percentage of cards and earned a free sausage sizzle on Open Day.

LOOSE CHANGE DRIVE Remember to keep sending in your small coins. The class with the most money raised will earn a free Pizza early in Term 4.

FATHERS’ DAY STALL The P & C are holding a fathers’ day stall on Tuesday 29

th August. Save your money to buy something special for your

Dad, Grandad or uncle. The gifts will be priced between 50c and $5.00. If you have something new that you could donate to the stall please drop it into the front office. All donations are welcome. Thank you for your support, Blacktown West P&C committee.

WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN Blacktown West is participating in this year’s Earn & Learn at Woolworths. We have a sticker drop off box in the Schools office & also a box at Woolworths in WESPOINT Blacktown.
