9:30 Board Meeting

It looks like we have survived the winter, and I hope all of you have had a chance to clean up your boat and get ready for the sailing season, although for some it never stops. Many of our cruisers are on their way back, or are back, from the islands, and BSC is starting to get busy. With that traffic, the potholes have made a comeback in the driveway. As soon as I became Commodore, members started letting me know what I needed to do. The number one request was that we look into paving the drive. My set response was that the Board would be glad to consider it; but without firm estimates and a plan, we couldn't even discuss paving the drive. Well, an enterprising group of members got together and had a couple of paving companies come out to the Club and provide estimates and advice. There are some very good reasons to consider this project.

BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPH

I told Jennifer about the reasons below for why paving would be a good idea:

• Potholes, potholes, potholes. For some reason, our membership finds it easier to drive through the grass than grab a shovel and fill in a hole, making the drive wider and wider.

• Potholes are also problematic. If you have ever tried to tow a viper trailer around our parking lot, these holes are not kind to a lightweight boat on a trailer.

• Dust. I washed my car this morning and it is already covered in dust.

• Cost. The biggest driver of cost for asphalt is oil. I think everyone is aware that oil prices are at historic lows; so if we were considering this move, now is the time.

• Curb appeal. This might not seem like a big deal, but we need to make sure that when someone comes to visit BSC they think “wow, this is a first class facility.” First impressions are important and we need prospective members to want to join our club. We lose approximately 10% of our membership every year for various reasons and we need to attract new, high quality members.

After I had gone through this list, Jennifer said I guess those are all good reasons; but that is not the real reason the membership should do this. When almost all of the current members joined the club, someone before them had invested capital and time to create the clubhouse, grounds and docks. We owe it to the next generation of BSC members to leave the club better than when we got here - pay it forward is the expression. The biggest concern I have about taking on this project is people speeding through the parking lot. We already have people driving at excessive speeds and, luckily, more and more children running around the club these days. We will have to consider some sort of speed control measures. Our current cash situation is very good. Bill Braun has been working on a 15 year projection and while we are currently in a good cash position, in the not too distant future we will start having some cash shortfalls because of dock repair. We will need to start thinking about raising dues - never a popular topic, but one that will be necessary to ensure the long term success of our club. As a reminder, any dues increase must be voted on by the membership. I am certain the membership will have an opinion on both of these matters. I suggest you get with any of the board members and let them know your thoughts so that the board can make an informed decision based on member feedback. The directors and their contact information is at the end of this newsletter. On a final note, I am sure some have noticed our website is getting a bit dated. Joni Floyd, one of our board members, is leading a team to build a new website using a modern platform. The way our current website is built, the only person who can edit it is the builder, and he is no longer a member. Going forward, the website will be easier to keep up-to-date with all of the same functionality we had before. I hope to see you out on the water!

Our April 2 Social was well attended by many in costume (from the 50s and 60s) bearing favorite dishes from that era.

However…

We had 50 sign up to attend so the team set up for 70, just in case.  When 88 showed up, there was a last minute scramble to set up places for everyone to eat.  What should we do???  The suggestion has been made to invite those who signed up to go through the line first and take preferred seating.  This may be done by tickets as you first come in.  The ladies are open to suggestions.

We want you to come!  We really want you to sign up via the website by the suggested deadline.

Thanks to Joanne Doughty and Raye Lynn Fletcher for hostessing  this great event.

BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPH

Strong winds that forced two race date cancellations in the Spring Series, the Ensign fleet has put six to eight boats on the line the past two Thursday afternoons. We all feel real-ly bad for the folks staring at computer screens on Thurs-days. Right. The last two weeks have been aggressive for racing, but generally comfortable for the heavy old Ensigns. After seven races with lots to go, Blue Note holds a slim lead on Paul Eckenroth and Drew McCrocklin’s Red Stripe. Because of the wind, spinnakers have been almost absent on many runs with little to show for the extra effort. With lighter air forecast (?), maybe the runs will become more tactical and less white knuckle. The series wraps up with the make-up date on May 5th (the real Cinco de Mayo).

SoundBank/ETYSA Regatta Perfect Racing Even in our lovely North Carolina weather, it is rare to have two near perfect days for racing on a week-end as we had April 23 & 24. They usually seem to fall only on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The kids of the Edward Teach Youth Sailing Association and nearly twenty PHRF racers benefited. The young sailors will get a donation and the racers had a lot of fun. Saturday winds were 7-12 with a few whitecaps, but the wind di-rection was so steady that even our picky PRO Jarvis only changed the course once in three long races. Saturday evening, the storms held off until after the burger and brat cookout. Sunday was a near copy except for some serious oscillations in direction and strength. Twenty-one boats registered and nineteen competed, including four boats from ODC, four from NYRA and eleven from Black-beard. This regatta was first of two this year to determine Neuse River superiority. To support the new ICRC recommended format, there were seven divisions in three classes – Spinnaker, Non-Spin-naker and Cruising. This helped narrow the handicap bands. In Cruising, two boats competed, with BSC’s George Meyer’s Traumerei coming in second. In Non-Spinnaker, Bob Stevens’s Velocity was alone in A, but competed well across the Class. Dave Whitney in Silent Pursuit was first in B, with four firsts in the division. In C, Margaret Alexander in her SJ 21 Orion was convincingly first. Spinnaker A was taken by Todd Cox in Loon by one point over Eddy Parker’s Granny’s Hoe. In B, Tom McKnight in Boartaint beat out Drew McCrocklin’s Team Elite and Ed Doughty’s Super Bueno. In C, Mark & Mark won with five firsts in Ensign Blue Note.

May 7 is the NYRA Cinco de Mayo for one designs, including San Juan 21s, Ensigns, Sunfish, Tanzer 16s, FJs and anyone else. Three boats constitute a class. And… the regatta will be held at Blackbeard, not in New Bern! The logistics, especially with our improved launching ramp. The NOR is posted on Regat-taNetwork.com or contact Drew McCrocklin at [email protected] or 252-288-5043. May 28 & 29 was the NCOC in the ocean off Beaufort. Unfortunately, the regatta has been cancelled for this year. Look for a comeback next year. June 11 & 12 is the River Dunes Charity for Hope Clinic Regatta, a benefit that always attracts a big fleet from the Neuse and Pamlico area. The parties and facilities at River Dunes alone make the trip worthwhile. Contact Henry Frazer of ODC at [email protected] or 252-670-8237. June 18 is the Indian Island to Ocracoke race sponsored by Pamlico Sailing Club. Indian Island is unin-habited (probably) just up the Pamlico from the ICW. The race is about 35 miles across the Pamlico Sound, often on one tack. Contact Elbert Kennard at [email protected] or 252-714-1878. July 9 & 10 is the Hancock Regatta at Cherry Point. This should really read July 8 – 10 since HYC throws a very warm welcome party and cookout Friday evening. It is one regatta I miss since Compass Rose has stopped racing. Contact Scott Shermeyer at [email protected] or 252-447-2731. July 30 is the NYRA Parrothead “Regatta”. Not a totally serious cruise downriver to Oriental with a rum-soaked raftup at the end. Contact Drew McCrocklin.

May, June and July Race Events by Mark Brennesholtz

The Edward Teach Youth Sailing Association (ETYSA) held a rescheduled work day in conjunction with its 2016 Annual Meeting and Picnic on April 9 at BSC. A work crew of ETYSA member families started the day clean-ing boats and the boat storage area, and also organizing the boat shed. After the cleanup, the work crew started repair work on boats necessary to get ETYSA’s fleet of 14 Optimist sailboats and 6 Topaz dinghies ready for the summer schedule of camps. This work is ongoing; the club can always use a hand with the maintenance and repair of its fleet. Anyone who would like to help out and “sponsor” a boat, please contact Alan Hills, or any ETYSA board member.

Immediately after the work day, ETYSA held its annual meeting to elect directors and conduct other club business. The new directors and their contact information is below; the board will have another membership meeting on May 21st (when another work day is scheduled as well). All are welcome to at-tend both the meeting and the workday.

ETYSA families also met in April at the Accidental Artist in New Bern and Greenville to create and de-sign one-of-a-kind trophies for use at BSC’s Sound Bank/ETYSA Regatta, scheduled for April 23-24. Fun was had by both kids and their parents, and BSC will have the best sailing trophies imaginable for the ICRC event.

BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPH

For new members (and others who may not be aware), ETYSA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization ded-icated to teaching youth sailing. Incorporated in 2009 by a group of BSC members, ETYSA offers Satur-day clinics in the Spring and Fall (free for ETYSA members), and a series of week-long camps for youth in the summer. Membership in ETYSA is required for participation in both clinics and camps, and is open to BSC members as well as other children in the surrounding community. The generous support of the BSC board and membership has allowed us to keep costs low and offer an affordable and safe av-enue for children to be introduced to sailing! Scholarships are available for kids who have financial need; this year ETYSA will award a total of 10 to deserving local children through HeartWorks of Pamli-co County. Please consider supporting ETYSA with a donation of time or money in 2016, and help us continue to grow the sport of sailing! More information can be found at etysa.org.

April 23rd being the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, the stage was set for the SoundBank/ETYSA Regatta at Blackbeard Sailing Club.

With expert guidance from the “backstage” BSC LOTC, and after days and hours of scrubbing picnic ta-bles, fridges and freezers, and food shopping, chopping and schlepping, the ETYSA Food Committee Cast was ready for their command performance.

ETYSA campers and adult volunteers proudly wore their new T-Shirt “costumes” to show their involve-ment and support for this yearly fund raiser.

After a signal from the race committee that hungry, thirsty sailors were on their way into port, the BBQ cast members fired up the grills around 1600 and started cooking over 240 brats and hamburgers!

ETYSA kids (who also prepared the award plates) became willing runners bringing prepared foods from the kitchen to the lunch shelter. Drinks were iced down, tables were set, and all stood by for the open-ing curtain, which went off with no hitches. (Of course, only those working backstage know how that really works!) The inside and outside cast members made it seem effortless in preparing the end-of-day meal for over 120 sailors and volunteers!

At the very end of the day, heavy wind and rain finally came our way and had everyone scurrying about to quickly breakdown the stage!

And oh what a beautiful rainbow appeared over the creek to end the show!

Thanks to all who helped with the production, too many names to mention…..you know who you are. Our thanks to Blackbeard for providing the stage!

Special Note on Dry Storage

For the past six months Mike Foster, Dry Storage Master, and Chris Davies & Wes Jorgenson, Dinghy Mas-ters, have been working to identify boats, trailers and dinghies left at the club over the years. This has been a long and time-consuming process. Going forward, if you are going to leave something on BSC property, you must contact one of these people so they can let you know where it should go and put the information in the club records. At our April board meeting, the Board voted to institute a $100 re-search fee for anyone who leaves a boat, dinghy or trailer on club property without notifying the proper person.

I am sure most of you have noticed the new garden beds at the entrance to BSC. These changes have been done with the blessing of the board by a group of dedicated Blackbeard gardeners. Planning be-gan this past winter with assessment of an overall land use plan for the club. We then created plans for renovating old gardens, and adding some new areas of planting. We will be making these changes over a 2-3 year timeframe, utilizing BCS workdays, recycling materials where possible, and utilizing divisions

from members’ gardens along with purchased plants. The centerpiece for this year is the new bed just inside the BCS gate featuring a Windmill Palm. This tree was chosen because years from now its canopy will not interfere with masts going through the gate, and it reflects our Southern environment. The tree is surrounded by Drift Roses, and a backdrop of Sky Pencil Hollies. New grass has been planted around the wooden box, so be careful where you step! Outside the gate we have repurposed old dock posts to be edging for the outer bed, and have replanted with grasses and hardy perennials that deer are not as likely to eat. Inside the gate we have also added a Red-bud, Dogwood, and White Fringe tree, all native understory trees. On the front deck please notice the beautiful blue planters with annuals, and perennial bulbs to bloom during the growing season. Members of the gardening committee volun-teer to water these new plantings every few days into the fall

to make sure they get well established. Enjoy these new plantings as they grow into their new spaces! Your participation would be welcome in two ways: we will accept memorial donations to defray the cost of the Palm tree and help with watering. If you would like to make a Memorial donation, please contact Gay Whitney,   252-671-5650 and [email protected] . If you are willing to help with watering, please contact Ellen Beery- [email protected] or 203-856-9885.

If your dog is outside on a hot day, make sure he has a shady spot to rest in. Doghouses are not good shelter during the summer as they can trap heat. You may want to fill a child's wading pool with fresh water for your dog to cool off in. Never leave your dog in a closed vehicle on a hot day. The temperature inside a car can rise to over 100 degrees in a matter of minutes. Always provide plenty of cool, fresh water. Avoid strenuous exercise on extremely hot days. Take walks in the early mornings or evenings when the sun's heat is less intense. Try to avoid prolonged exposure to hot asphalt or sand which can burn your dog's paws. Dogs that are brachycephalic (short-faced), such as Bulldogs, Boxers, Japanese Chins and Pekingese, have an especially hard time in the heat because they do not pant as efficiently as longer-faced dogs. Keep your brachycephalic dog inside with air-conditioning.
