Note from our Councillor
With a new community council elected this month it is time to thank
those who have served on the community council for the last three
years. They have been excellent at raising local issues and pursuing
them to get better services for the local community. It is also
important to recognise the work the various groups do in creating a
community spirit, such as the Christmas dinner, sports day, and
Fireworks display, and would ask everyone to do all they can to
support the new team in the next four years.
With us heading into the winter period it seems like a good time to
outline the council’s policy on gritting etc.
There is a set procedure for gritting, with the primary routes being
first. These are:
1. Routes to hospitals, schools, ambulance depots, fire stations
and police stations
2. Class A and B roads
3. Roads in Clydesdale that are the only way in and out of
towns and villages
4. District and local roads in urban areas.
As we do not have the resources we cannot priorities residential
areas and often by the time we have finished the primary routes we
need to start treating again. This program as stated does not cover
all roads but will cover 52% and this is more than most councils
manage, with the Scottish average 47%.
It does seem very early but as this will be the last newsletter before
Christmas I would like to wish everyone, on behalf of myself and my
two colleagues, a merry Christmas and a good new year.
Cllr Allison

Sponsored Walk
The Sponsored Walk in September this year had three different routes organised by Andrew Highton, all starting and finishing at Elsrickle Hall, when the most energetic reached the summit of The Black Mount!
£500 was raised towards our funds, and thanks go to all walkers and particularly to all sponsors!

Black Mount Sports Night
This year the Annual Sports Night took place on Friday 8th June at Newbigging playing fields. It was held slightly later than the normal date and as a result we enjoyed a lovely summer evening with a great turnout of competitors and spectators.
The primary and secondary school children compete for the
Agnes Allison shields and points are awarded for places in the sprints, egg and spoon, sack, bean bag and obstacle races. The preschool children also take part in all the races and this year we had a great turnout of little ones. There were some very competitive races to watch, with lots of cheering from the sidelines. The ladies opted to run an egg and spoon race and the men competed in a sprint race.
The preschool winner in the boys group was Struan Malone and joint girl’s winners were Isla Malone and Eva Ward.
Primary school winner was Harris Cairns and runner up was Autumn McDougall.
Secondary school winner was Charlotte Campbell and runner up was Niamh Cairns.
The winner of the Ladies race was Corrie Ward and the Gents winner was Paul Woodhall Novak.
Well done to all the winners.
Thank you to all the volunteers who assisted on the evening with starting, scoring, tape holding and tuck shop. Special thanks to Mrs Hamilton who allowed us to use her toilet. The final event of the evening was the charity fun run and this raised £18 for the Quarriers charity.

New School Building Community Project
As many of you are aware, the construction of the new school building at Elsrickle has started.
We would like to undertake a project to mark the building of and the move to a new school building. We would like this to be a project that includes the wider community. We are therefore looking for
ideas of projects that our wider community would be interested in participating in. Some projects other schools have completed are stained glass windows; mosaic tiles and willow weaving.
We would really like to use local expertise in this project and are looking for willing/enthusiastic volunteers to take a leading role. If you or anyone you know fits the bill, we would very much appreciate it if you could let us know. Once the project/s have been decided, we will inform every one of the next steps.
At this moment in time we are thinking that the basis of any project will be around the environment, history and community of the local area which makes up the catchment of the school. However we are open to ideas.
If you have any suggestions or ideas for projects or would like to
be involved please contact the school office either on 01899 810234 or email the office on: [email protected]

New P1 Children
Welcome to Lyra, Isla, Struan, Peter and Eva who have settled in well and are enjoying school life at Walston.
New Lanark Book Festival
On Wednesday 12th September the whole school went to New Lanark to see an author. He was called David Goutcher and he wrote a book called Spy Quest, The Cursed Diamond. He told us about the book and it was about a jewel thief called Franco and he stole a diamond that cost millions of pounds. He also told us about his life and that he wanted to be a policeman when he was 16 but then he couldn’t until he was 22. I really liked listening to him. After Harris and David went to get the book signed for the school. After we went to the Ice Cream Factory. We learnt all about how ice cream was made and the Health and Safety rules.
After we went for a walk beside the River Clyde.

Biggar Science Festival Thursday 20 September
P6 went to the Science Festival in Biggar. The first thing we did was watch a science show, it was my
favourite thing. I enjoyed taking part in the experiments. I would like to go again, it was fun.

Zoolab Thursday 27 September
Zoolab came to the school. He brought in a millipede. It felt tickly. Then he took a cockroach and it felt like a little massage. Next was a big snail. I did not touch the snail. Then he brought a snake and it felt smooth. There was a scorpion and a tarantula. We did not get to touch them or the toad. My favourite was the hedgehog.

Bulk Oil Buying Groups
Our last order was placed mid-August with Bryce Oil at the price of 47.5ppl (ex VAT). We ordered a total of 44,300 litres over 57 households within the Dolphinton and Blackmount areas.
Seven other oil companies were phoned for quotes – Bilsland, Certas Energy, Chrystal Petroleum, Oil Fast, Highland Fuels, Johnston Oils and RIX. Their quotes ranged from 47.75ppl to 49.95ppl. Bryce Oil confirmed by ordering via a bulk buying group we had all personally saved 4.5ppl on 500 litre orders (£22.50) and 3.5ppl on 1000 litre orders (£35). The next order is planned for w/c 5th November and anyone who wishes to order oil through the bulk buy scheme can email Tricia or Catriona using the emails below. The minimum order is 500 litres and suppliers may surcharge or refuse to deliver smaller amounts.
Our sincere thanks to everyone who has placed an order with the groups to date and we welcome new members. If you’d like to join us or to discuss how this free money-saving scheme works, then please contact:-

Answers to the August puzzle corner
Nine letter word - community
Did you solve the equation puzzle from the August edition?
There are multiple answers:
1. Take the yellow stick from the addition sign and move it to the left, so the six becomes an eight (8-4=4).
2. Move the horizontal green stick in the six to turn the number into zero (0+4=4).
3. Move the blue stick in the six and place it so the answer to the equation becomes nine (5+4=9).
