Message from the Pre/Primary School
Another year begins in our very busy Pre and Primary School! We welcome all our new staff, children and parents to
our School!
As we write these Newsletters to you over the year, you will see that our Guiding Statements are mentioned numerous
times. Our Guiding Statements are what we do and why we do it that way at BISI. We rewrote our Guiding State-
ments in child speak for our younger students. For our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) children, we have five
statements stating that all our children are ‘unique and special’, ‘we are kind, friendly and helpful’, ‘we play nicely by
sharing and taking turns’, ‘we look after everyone and everything’, and finally ‘we listen to our friends and our teach-
ers’. For our Primary aged children, we created a motto that they would remember: ‘I Succeed’. I is for Investigate:
‘we will investigate- inquire, reflect and explore’, S is for Safe: ‘we will learn about our social, emotional and physi-
cal needs to be able to keep ourselves safe’, U is for Unity: ‘we will care and share to help create unity in the world’,
C is for Creativity: ‘we will try to think creatively all the time’, C is for Community: ‘we will care about our school,
local and international communities’, E is for Education; ‘we will do our best to learn as much as we can’, E is for
Environment: ‘we will care about and be responsible for the environment- earth and everything on it’, and D is for
Daring: ‘we will dare to be the best person we can be with patience, kindness, integrity and respect for others’. Please
ask your child to see if they can remember our motto!
We welcomed all staff back to school in the last week of August. As part of our new teachers’ induction week in Au-
gust, we enjoyed an overnight stay in Polonezkoy and a boat trip down the Bosphorus. You will hear the phrase
‘lifelong learners’ at our school. This phrase pertains to teachers as well as the children. We invited training consult-
ants from the UK to come to our school to keep our teachers up to date with current practice as part of our commit-
ment to continuous professional development. We invited new parents to an open morning/afternoon in August. They
met with their child’s Class Teacher and we answered frequently asked questions at an informal seminar. At the be-
ginning of September, all parents were invited into their child’s classroom to discuss the overview of the year.
The PTA at both campuses has been busy from the first week of September! They arranged a second hand uniform
sale and also organised our annual External Activities Fair in the first weeks of September. This fair catered for all
individuals and groups who support our community by teaching private lessons for our children. There were private
music teachers, dance and drama teachers, language courses, fencing coaches, and counselors for example in attend-
ance. The Zekeriyakoy Campus PTA organized a Sunday Brunch at Garden Fiesta this year to welcome all new par-
ents to our school and greet returning parents from last year. Please approach one of us if you have a little time to
spare to support our events throughout the year.
Other events included our Curricular Enrichment Activities starting on a Friday morning, and our After School and
Private Clubs after school for the Primary aged children. The Year 5 children and parents listened to an informative
talk regarding their residential trip to Space Camp in Izmir. Mr Topuz is currently taking your child’s class and indi-
vidual photographs. He will continue next month to take the sibling photographs.
We have included some photos of our awards ceremonies held in June which were not published in the last edition of
the newsletter.
We wish you all the best for the year ahead!

Etiler– Year 3 Trip
Intrepid Explores in Etiler.
In early September 3G in Etiler set out to discover everything they could about the area their school is in.
We looked, we walked, we talked, we filled in surveys and tallies and forms. After an exhausting adventure
the school sign picture was taken and we all went into the class to collapse!

Etiler Campus—Street Dance Club
Street Dance Interactive demonstration in the Etiler playground.
At lunch time on Monday 23rd September a man with a cool hat sauntered (after security, of course!) into
Etiler playground and switched on the music. ‘Mr Bolek!” cried those in the know. “Let’s dance!” he said
and dance they did.
Here are some of our cool moves…

Secondary parents could be forgiven for not noticing the change to the newsletter this month, so I will point it
out here. In the past our newsletter has concentrated on events that have already happened, but this year we
have decided to put in a page (you can find it in the front of the Newsletter on Page 2) telling you what is go-
ing to happen in the forthcoming month. At the moment it is just a list of dates and events but we would love
to hear from you if you have any ideas for improving this.
The first month of the year was not the most eventful of months, especially as we had a holiday just eight
days into the term, but we are back, we are running and the term is running smoothly. Last week we had the
Week of Languages in Secondary School but as this only finished on Friday, it will not feature in the News-
letter until next month.
This week we have Trips Week for Year 7, 8, 9 and 12 whilst Year 10, 11 and 13 have a special timetable
concentrating on English, Languages and Mathematics (with the addition of Creative Arts for Y10). You will
be able to read all about these events in the October Newsletter.
I hope you enjoy the newsletter and all the events we have planned for the coming months.

Secondary Awards Ceremony—June 2016
Secondary Awards - Music 29 June 2016
At the Presentation of Awards for the Secondary School, Year 7 performed two traditional British Folk-
songs, A -Roving and Skye Boat Song. Their beautiful warm singing set the tone for the following very mu-
sical performances. Our newly formed BISI Orchestra, made up of students and teachers, gave tight, clean
renditions of Greensleeves (trad. English) and Y esterday (Lennon/McCartney). The final number was A
Drop in the Ocean (Tolga Kashif) featuring the Chamber Choir and Orchestra together in a marvelous,
rousing performance to finish off the musical offerings for the academic year. We are looking forward to
thrilling you with many more next season.

Zekeriyakoy—Year 8 Art Trip
The Creative Arts Department started the year off with
a fantastic Year 8 Arts trip to the exhibition: MACK
Just Light and Colour t the Sabanci Museum on
September 8th. The German artist, Heinz Mack, was
one of the founders of a mid-20th century avant-garde
network known as the ZERO movement. The exhibi-
tion brought together paintings, sculptures and kinetic
works from the artist’s long
career.
The students used the exhibition as a starting point for
this term's creative work. They will make visual art
pieces (8B) and musical compositions (8I), based on
what they saw and experienced there.
