This year marks the 30th anniversary of theMiami International Film Festival and duringa press conference on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at theNational Historic Landmark Freedom Towerin downtown Miami the program for the 10-day event beginning Mar. 1 was announced.

Miami Dade College, which now owns theFreedom Tower (the former Miami Newsbuilding), produces and presents the festivalthat has grown steadily over the years. Aftera video montage of vintage news reports ofpast festivals, MIFF executive director JaieLaplante announced that there would be 117feature films, including many world, NorthAmerican and U.S. premieres.

For the first time in MIFF history, the festi-val will open and close with documentary fea-tures, Twenty Feet from Stardom directed byMorgan Neville and Venus and Serena direct-ed by Maiken Baird and Michelle Major.

“The fact that these were two of the mostcompelling, overwhelming, joyous films thatwere in our program made them naturalselections to be in our gala and conclusion,”Laplante said.

The festival films will be presented at twohistoric landmarks, the Gusman CenterOlympia Theater and MDC’s Tower Theater,as well as at Coral Gables Art Cinema, OCinema, Regal South Beach and MiamiBeach Cinematheque.

It is estimated that the annual festival attractsmore than 70,000 audience members and morethan 400 filmmakers, producers, talent andindustry professionals. There are six competitioncategories with many films vying for awards indocumentary, dramatic and other divisions

A guest at the press conference was RuthShack, who served three terms on the Metro-Dade County Commission in the 1970s and’80s, and who sat on the original MIFF boardof directors in the festival’s first year, 1984.She remembered how extraordinary that was.

“The sheer audacity of the idea blew us all

away,” Shack said. “Miami’s modern historyhas been short, and clearly the film festivalwas one of the most audacious, one of themost visionary and one of the most excitingconcepts to come along. There was skepti-cism that the film festival would last, but Ithink others would agree with me that thesheer joy of having made it 30 years later israther remarkable.”

Laplante asked her what the highlightswere for her of that very first film festival.

“It was the people involved,” Shack said.“It was having people come from other com-munities to ours to look around, to see someof these films that were being shown and torecognize us as a player in a field that wereally knew very little about.”

Laplante acknowledged that it has notalways been smooth sailing for the festival, even in more recent years, but even thoughthere have been some challenges, “we’re in avery good place here.”

Shack agreed, noting that when MDC tookthe helm, it made a difference.

“When the college stood up and said ‘wewill be a part of this exciting adventure,’ I thinkwe all had a great relief that it was going to sur-vive,” Shack said. “Here was an organizationwith a stellar reputation in the community andan interest in not only film but how film wasmade. It made me feel a whole lot better.”

MIFF will bestow Career Achievementawards to Academy Award-winning directorFernando Trueba and Academy Award-nomi-nated director Lasse Hallström, best known forhis film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. RiverPhoenix’s last movie, Dark Blood, will makeits North American premiere at the festival.

“If you’re not at the movies every day inthe first 10 days of March, you’re in thewrong place,” Laplante said.

Shack added, “I think it’s going to be anextraordinary festival.”

The quaint historic neighborhood of

Miami just north of the booming

Wynwood and Midtown communities on

the edge of the Design District. The Buena

patrons — is a French bakery located at

4590 NE Second Ave.

Corentin “Cory” Finot, a master Parisian

The BVD has an inviting outdoor patio

where customers often mingle with

friends and children while reading compli-

mentary copies of the New York Times,Miami Herald or the assortment of Tin Tinbooks. Small dogs also find the patio an

ideal place to socialize.

Just before Art Basel and Miami Art

Week 2012, Pinot decided it was time to

decorate the blank patio wall facing the

patio with a colorful mural. He called on

the talented Edwin Sepulveda (aka Don

Rimx) who created a colorful Provencal

image that has been enjoyed by BVD

regulars.

Recently, artist Johanna Boccardo (aka

JOJAPIPOSA) was inspired by the geo-

metric pattern of the adjacent fence and

created her multicolored tape bombing art

installation titled Color Study In 45. These

artist efforts have resulted in a most icon-

ic intersection at NE 46th Street and

Second Avenue.

Goldman would be proud of Finot’s

efforts in Buena Vista to continue his

vision of creating a neighborhood outdoor

museum.

Buena Vista Deli celebrates artwith mural, fence installation

A recently installed mural and colorful enhancements to the patio fence have made the Buena Vista Deli an evenmore “tasteful” stop for diners.

A Miami Arts Charter (MAC) music

student, Terrence Smith, has won a covet-

ed spot playing in the violin section of the

National Youth Symphony Orchestra

(NYO-USA). The NYO-USA recently

concluded its first annual nationwide

search for teen musicians who will travel

to Washington, DC, and Eastern Europe.

The inaugural program, sponsored by

Carnegie Hall and Purchase College of

the State University of New York, located

in Westchester County, chose only 120

students out of an application pool of

10,000. Musicians must be between the

ages of 16 and 19 and not yet attending a

college or university program, where they

would presumably have other opportuni-

ties or conflicts with major orchestras.

They auditioned by video and applied

online.

“I was completely surprised to find out

about this amazing opportunity,” Smith

said. “The next five months are going to

be the longest wait of my life.”

As a member of the tuition-free NYO-

USA, between June 30 and July 23,

Terrence will work with orchestra director

James Ross and the principal players from

some of America’s top orchestras during a

three-week residency at Purchase College

in Purchase, NY. He then will embark on

tour with Valery Gergiev, who also is

music director of the Mariinsky Theatre

in St. Petersburg, Russia, and principal

conductor of the London Symphony

Orchestra.

“I think every youth orchestra around

the world is very important, and I expect

that the National Youth Orchestra of the

USA, in particular, will be very highly

accomplished, both technically and artis-

tically, noted the maestro on Carnegie

Hall’s blog.

“I look forward to getting to know

many new, gifted musicians — sharing

ideas, learning together, and going on a

cultural journey, discovering new places,”

he added. “For students, I expect playing

in NYO-USA will be an honor, a chal-

lenge, a pleasure, and an unforgettable

experience not to be missed.”

The ensemble will be backing violin

soloist Joshua Bell while traveling to

Washington, DC; St. Petersburg (Russia);

Moscow, and London.

“Not only is this going to be a great

musical and educational experience, but it

will change his life forever in all other

aspects,” said Aleksander Djuric, MAC’s

associate conductor. “I had a similar

experience in the European Youth

Orchestra my last year of high school and,

for me, the most valuable were the long-

lasting friendships established back then

and being surrounded by high quality

musicians, which is paying dividends now

almost 30 years later.”

Like Djuric, Clive Gillinson,

Carnegie’s executive and artistic director,

played in such an orchestra in his youth.

His experience as cellist for the NYO of

Great Britain inspired his creation of the

NYO-USA.

“It was an inspiration, part of why I

wanted to take up music,” he told TheNew York Times in January 2012, when

the program was first announced to the

public.

MAC founder and director Alfred de la

Rosa, who is also the instrumental music

conductor, said, “It is truly a pleasure to

see such a deserving musician be recog-

nized. Terrence’s acceptance to the

National Youth Orchestra, though not sur-

prising, is a very important personal

achievement for him. He is a stellar musi-

cian and I am proud to have witnessed his

growth at MAC. I expect to see many

more great accomplishments from this

great young musician.”

Keith Lockhart is leading the BostonPops in a 10-concert, nine-city tour of theSoutheast United States that includes aMar. 5, 7:30 p.m., stop at the Arsht Centerin Miami.

The tour features a tribute to The BarbraStreisand Songbook with celebrated vocal-ist and award-winning songwriter AnnHampton Callaway, whose songs are fea-tured on six of Barbra Streisand’s recentalbums.

The Boston Pops’ 2013 Southeast USATour is sponsored by Fidelity Investments.

Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops willopen their tour program with some of themost beloved themes from musical theaterand film, including Marvin Hamlisch’sThrough the Eyes of Love from the film IceCastles and the overture to A Chorus Line,as part of a special tribute to the late com-poser and his most celebrated music.

Lockhart also will lead the Boston Popsin such musical theater masterpieces as

Stephen Sondheim’s Send in the Clownsfrom A Little Night Music, the title songfrom Jerry Herman’s musical Hello, Dolly!,and Jule Styne’s overture to Gypsy, as wellas John Kander’s theme song to MartinScorsese’s film New York, New York.

Ann Hampton Callaway, whom KeithLockhart describes as having a “gorgeousvoice and an unmatched musical intelli-gence,” takes center stage during the post-intermission set to sing The Way We Were,Don’t Rain On My Parade, and a medley ofPeople and Being Alive also featuringAmerican jazz pianist Ted Rosenthal.

Affectionately known as “America’sOrchestra,” the Boston Pops is the mostrecorded and arguably the most belovedorchestra in the country, beginning with theestablishment of the modern-era Pops byArthur Fiedler and continuing through theinnovations introduced by John Williamsand the new-millennium Pops spearheadedby Keith Lockhart. With the 125th anniver-

sary season in 2010, the Boston Popsreached a landmark moment in a remark-able history that began with its founding in1885 by Civil War veteran Henry LeeHigginson, who founded the Boston

Symphony Orchestra (sister organization tothe Boston Pops) four years earlier in 1881.From the start Mr. Higginson intended topresent, in the warmer months, concerts oflight classics and the popular music of theday. From a practical perspective,Higginson realized that these “lighter” per-formances would provide year-roundemployment for his BSO musicians. The“Promenade Concerts,” as they were origi-nally called, were soon informally knownas “Popular Concerts,” which eventuallybecame shortened to “Pops,” the name offi-cially adopted in 1900. Some people maynot realize that there were 17 Pops conduc-tors, beginning with the German AdolfNeuendorff, who preceded Arthur Fiedler, the first American-born musician to leadthe orchestra.

Having led more than 1,400 Boston Popsconcerts, Keith Lockhart (1995-present)has served 18 seasons as Boston Pops con-ductor. In response to the ever-diversifyingtrends in music, Keith Lockhart has takenthe Pops in new directions, creating pro-grams that reach out to a broader andyounger audience by presenting a widerange of artists — both established per-formers and rising stars — while maintain-ing the Pops’ appeal to its core audience.

Surrounded by the love, respect and

admiration of family, friends and cowork-

ers, Fire Chief Dave Downey assumed

command of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue

(MDFR) on Feb. 1.

MDFR celebrated its first ever Change

of Command ceremony in order to pay

tribute to retiring Fire Chief William

“Shorty” Bryson, a 38-year veteran of the

fire service and the new Fire Chief Dave

Downey, who brings 30 years experience

as a firefighter, company officer, battalion

chief, division chief, and assistant chief of

operations. The ceremony took place at

MDFR’s Training Facility located at 9300

NW 41 St. in Doral.

Changes of command ceremonies are

steep in tradition; these ceremonies are a

formal, symbolic passing of responsibility,

authority and accountability of command

from one leader to another. The event

began with the preliminary honors, and

ended with the symbolic passing of the

guidon, or “colors.” Passing the guidon

from one chief to another represents the

passing of trust and wellbeing of a sector

from one to another, but it also perpetuates

the seamless tradition of vigilance, service

and integrity.

“I am torn even now leaving this won-

derful organization,” Bryson said. “I leave

knowing that Chief Dave Downey knows

this department better than anyone. I see

good things coming from his leadership

and wish him all the luck.”

In addition to Chief Downey’s work

experience, he has completed numerous

professional courses and earned his asso-

ciate and bachelor’s degrees in Fire

Science, as well as a master’s degree in

Public Administration. Moreover, he has

certifications as a technical rescue techni-

cian, flight medic, task force leader and a

fire instructor. Currently, he serves as a

National Urban Search and Rescue

(US&R) Task Force representative with

the Federal Emergency Management

Agency (FEMA).

MDFR originated as a single-unit fire

patrol in 1935. It has grown into the

largest fire rescue department in the

Southeast. According to the 2011 National

Run Survey published in the June, July,

and August 2012 issues of Firehouse

Magazine, MDFR was ranked the fifth

largest fire department in the U.S. and the

department’s Aerial 2, stationed in Liberty

City, is the busiest aerial-ladder-truck in

North America for the third consecutive

year. This ranking is a result of responding

to 5,190 calls last year, 389 responses

more than the second place aerial from

Denver, CO and 650 calls more than the

third-ranked aerial in San Francisco, CA.
