ing contraption concept. While distance isimportant, creativity and showmanship arenecessary to impress the judges. These cri-teria have inspired such outrageous crafts asa towering Pope-mobile, an airborne out-house, gangsters, hotdogs and a replica ofSanta and his flying sleigh.

While the sky may be the limit on cre-ativity, there are still a few flight regula-tions. All aircrafts must be entirely human-powered — no motors or stored energysuch as slingshots or catapults — and can-not exceed 450 pounds (including thepilot). Remember that size does matter, andall aircraft must be less than 30 feet wide.

Since the first Red Bull Flugtag inVienna, Austria, in 1991, more than 100

Flugtags have been held around the world, attracting up to 300,000 spectators for asingle event.

The record for the farthest flight to-date inthe United States currently stands at 207 feetand was set at Red Bull Flugtag St. Paul in2010 by team Major Trouble and the DirtyDixies. The pressure is on for this year’s RedBull Flugtag flyers to blow these records offthe charts. The Red Bull Flugtag in Miamiwill be the third of four Flugtags held thisyear, with other competitions occurring inChicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco.

Red Bull Flugtag is free and open to thepublic.

A campaign by the Pets Trust Initiativegroup to reduce killing animals in Miami-Dade County kicked off its campaign at theBiltmore Hotel in Coral Gables on Aug. 9.The initiative is to gain support from votersin a non-binding referendum on the Nov. 6general election ballot.

The plan would create two “Super Clinics”in north and south Miami-Dade County, offering free or affordable spaying and/neu-tering services, as well as low cost veterinarycare for qualified pet owners.

Registered voters will have the opportuni-ty to approve building facilities to help endeuthanizing an estimated 20,000 animalsannually at the county’s Animal ServicesShelter, according to Michael Rosenberg,Pets’ Trust president, who also heads theKendall Federation of HomeownerAssociations.

“Taxpayers are currently paying about$300 per year for every animal that comesthrough the county shelter,” explainedRosenberg, who initiated the idea along withanimal advocates Rita Schwartz and LindsayGordon. “We could spay or neuter for anaverage $65 per year at these clinics.”

Approved unanimously as a non-bindingreferendum by Miami-Dade County

Commissioners on July 17, a “yes” votewould allow a general millage hike of around0.10 mills (10 cents per $1,000) effective infiscal 2013 to build facilities and initiate spe-cial programs.

The clinics would spay or neuter up to50,000 animals yearly and offer low-cost vet-erinary services as well as provide alterna-tives to encourage pet retention. Ancillaryprograms would initiate reduction of feral

and free-roaming cats, and subsidize whatRosenberg terms a “severely under-funded”South Florida SPCA that assists large ani-mals that are abandoned or mistreated. Theplan would include educational programs toencourage adoptions and responsible petownership.

“There are obviously too many loose ani-mals throughout the county, which is why wehave been killing so many for decades,”Rosenberg explained to a gathering designedto generate pro-Pets Trust promotional sup-port.

The Pets Trust plan has been modeled afterthe existing Children’s Trust that supports avariety of programs aiding children, largelythrough support of non-profit social agencies.

Building tax-supported clinics wouldexpand neutering and spaying services at theexisting county currently limited to 15,000per year, Rosenberg said.

Development of clinics to reduce killinganimals was advanced after a June trip by aPets Trust group to Jacksonville where a sim-ilar program aids pet owners and is aimed atreducing the population of strays in DuvalCounty.

“For an average cost of 5 cents a day, wecan help fix this problem,” Rosenberg con-cluded. “I believe our community will lend ahand to animals that have no voice but ours.”

As a parent, you’re probably familiar-ized with all the forms that you have to filland sign when enrolling your child inschool. But are you aware that as many as140,000 children have their identitiesstolen each year?

According to the Federal TradeCommission (FTC), the nation’s consumerprotection agency, in the wrong handsyour child’s personal information can beused to commit fraud and your child couldbecome a victim of identity theft.Furthermore, you may not learn about thecrime for years, until your child is an adult, old enough to apply for jobs or loans.

There are laws in place to help safeguardyour child’s personal information. TheFederal Family Educational Rights andPrivacy Act (FERPA), enforced by theU.S. Department of Education, protects theprivacy of student records. In addition, italso gives you the right to opt out of shar-ing contact information with third parties, including other families.

While there is no guarantee that identitytheft can be avoided completely, as a par-ent you can take certain measures to pro-tect your child’s information. Pay attentionto materials sent home asking for personalinformation and, before you reveal infor-mation about your child, find out how itwill be used, whether it will be shared andwith whom.

Protect your child’s identity by doingthe following:

• Verify that school records are kept in asecure location and find out who will haveaccess to them.

• When filling out school forms or sur-veys, find out how it will be used and ask

if the information will be shared and withwhom.

• Read the notice schools must distributethat explains your rights under FERPA.

• Ask your child’s school about its direc-tory information policy. FERPA requiresschools to notify parents and guardiansabout their school directory policy, andgives you the right to opt out of the releaseof directory information to third parties.

• Ask for a copy of your school’s policyon surveys. The Protection of Pupil RightsAmendment (PPRA) gives you the right tosee such materials before they are distrib-uted to students.

If your child’s school experiences a databreach, take action. Contact the school tolearn more. Talk with teachers, staff oradministrators about the incident and theirpractices. Keep a written record of yourconversations. Write a letter to the appro-priate administrator, and to the schoolboard, if necessary.

The U.S. Department of Education takescomplaints about these incidents. Contactthe Family Policy Compliance Office, U.S.Department of Education, 400 MarylandAve., SW, Washington, DC 20202-5920,and keep a copy for your records.

Guard your child’s Social Security num-ber the way you should be guarding yourown. Keep social security cards and writ-ten or stored records of social securitynumbers in a safe and secure location andshred documents that have personal infor-mation including social security numberson them such as insurance forms, medicalrecords, tax records, etc.

Be careful what you share on socialmedia and limit revealing personal infor-mation that can make your children vulner-able to identity theft.

Safeguard personal informationwhen child goes back to school

She has five cats — one has one eye andone has only three legs. They are all rescuedfrom either the streets or from a local animalwelfare organization, including the HumaneSociety of Greater Miami. So whenMacPherson saw Tia, a three-legged dog atthe Humane Society of Greater Miami, itwas love at first sight.

“At first, I felt sorry for her,” MacPhersonsaid. “But once I got to know her, I saw whata happy dog she was and decided to adopther.”

MacPherson fostered Tia for a month tosee how she would get along with her catsbefore making the final decision.

“They get along beautifully, “MacPhersonsaid. “I bring her to work every day, so thatI am always with her.”

MacPherson writes grants for the HumaneSociety of Greater Miami.

“You just know that an animal is right foryou. A certain chemistry exists.”

Based on Tia’s injuries, Dr. MaureenSwan, chief medical officer at the HumaneSociety of Greater Miami, thinks that Tia gotinto a fight with another dog and while run-ning away got hit by a car. She was broughtto Miami-Dade Animal Services where herleg was amputated. During the HumaneSociety’s weekly trip to Animal Services torescue animals, Tia was one of the luckyones and came to the Humane Society ofGreater Miami to be put up for adoption.

“Tia adapted to having three legs verywell,” MacPherson said. The only thing shehad to teach Tia was how to climb stairs, andshe caught on immediately.

Growing up, MacPherson always wasaround animals. Her step-mom is pastpresident of the Sevier County Humane

Society in Tennessee — and runs anorganization called One by One that spaysand neuters animals. Plus, her step-momhas a Golden Retriever who is deaf. Theneed to adopt special needs animals mustrun in the family.

The Humane Society of Greater MiamiAdopt-A-Pet is a limited admit, adoptionguarantee facility dedicated to placing everydog and cat in its care into a loving home, and to promoting responsible pet ownershipand spay/neuter programs. Adoption guaran-tee simply means that every animal undertheir care is safe from the threat of euthana-sia for as long as it takes to find them a for-ever family.

If you want to learn about other specialneeds pets or about other animals availablefor adoption, visit the Humane Society ofGreater Miami’s website <www.humaneso-cietymiami.org>.

Officials and residents from aroundMiami-Dade hopped onboard a DieselMultiple Unit (DMU) railcar onWednesday, July 18, experiencing whatMiami-Dade Commission chair Joe A.Martinez hopes will be a new public transitoption in South Florida.

Martinez organized a demonstration ridealong the Florida East Corridor (FEC) fromDowntown Miami to North Miami so rid-ers could test the railcars. The DMU proj-ect seeks to utilize existing freight railroadlines to provide commuter rail service todifferent areas of the county and alleviateroadway congestion.

Since 2002, Martinez has pushed forthe county to upgrade its existing rail sys-tem by providing a link from Florida Cityto Miami’s airports. He has proposed aline that would run from the Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport, passingthrough high traffic areas around ZooMiami, Snapper Creek rest area ofFlorida’s Turnpike, and Miami-DadeCollege’s Kendall campus, all the way toTri-Rail’s Miami Airport station.

As the western and southern areas ofMiami-Dade have continued to expandthroughout the years, Martinez felt it was

appropriate to reintroduce the idea ofbringing better public transit to residentstraveling in those regions.

In a report compiled by Miami-Dade’sMetropolitan Planning Organization(MPO), one of the major reasons forMiami’s increase in traffic congestion hasbeen its burgeoning population. Since1980, Miami-Dade’s population has grownfrom 1.6 million residents to 2.5 million. With no improvements to the county’s cur-rent transit system beyond 2014, the MPOpredicts the population will continue toincrease to 3.28 million by 2035. This alsowould mean an estimated 11.8 milliondaily car trips for commuters and an aver-age commute of 36 minutes, a 38 percenttime increase from what Miami-Dade driv-ers experience currently.

“As Miami-Dade continues to grow, using existing rail lines may be the mostcost-effective way to provide faster transitoptions in high-traffic areas,” Martinezsaid. “Residents need some kind of reliefon the road between the gridlock and soar-ing gas prices. The DMU project offers thepotential to cut commute times and saveresidents money with fuel-efficient railcarsthat run with quiet engines.”

The Fire Officers Association of Miami-Dade(FOAM-D) conducted a press conference on July26 to announce the collaborative success of anunprecedented FOAM-D Stroke Consortium atFlorida International University’s HerbertWertheim College of Medicine.

Aiming to deliver the highest quality acutestroke care available and improve recoveryoutcomes, Coral Gables, Hialeah,Homestead, Key Biscayne, Miami, MiamiBeach and Miami-Dade fire rescue depart-ments have joined forces with area hospitalsto deploy one of the largest networks for thetreatment and transport of stroke victims inthe country.

According to the Center for DiseaseControl someone suffers a stroke every 45seconds of the day. This translates into morethan 780,000 strokes annually in the UnitedStates alone, with someone dying every 3.3minutes; costing more than $53.9 billioneach year for the treatment of stroke victims. It is the fourth leading cause of death and theprimary cause of adult disability in theUnited States.

The vision to create a stroke networkbegan in 1999, when only about half of thehospitals in South Florida were performingCT scans on a 24/7 basis. The scans are nec-essary to administer the clot-dissolving drug

TPA (tissue plasminogen activator). Toexpedite treatment, South Florida’s firefight-ers, doctors and local hospitals have collabo-rated to create one of the largest stroke con-sortiums in the nation called FOAM-DStroke Consortium.

“Under the Stroke Network, hospitals aredesignated as either a Primary orComprehensive stroke center. Primary facil-ities are able to provide care to stroke victimswho are within the 3.5-hour window thatallows for the use of the clot-busting drugTPA. The most serious cases and those pastthe critical 3.5-hour window will be trans-ported to a comprehensive facility staffed by

an interventional neuroradiologist,” said Dr.Jeffrey Horstmyer, FOAM-D neurologistand chair of the Department of Neurology ofFIU’s Herbert Wertheim College ofMedicine.

Dr. Horstmyer created a two-page check-list with Dr. Alejandro Forteza and CaptainJohn Curry from Coral Gables FireDepartment named “The Stroke Alert” tohelp emergency crews determine if a patientis having a stroke, how serious the stroke is,and which hospital can offer the best treat-ment.

“We are the ones responsible for makingsure we make the appropriate assessment on

the scene and get the patient transported tothe hospital, and most importantly for astroke, take patients to the appropriate hospi-tal,” said Chief Javier Otero of the MiamiBeach Fire Department. “What this expedi-tion of care does is reduce and hopefullyeventually eliminate deaths, but mostly theloss in quality of life after a stroke.”

Dr. Forteza said Phase 2 will include edu-cating the public about the symptoms of astroke.

“One program will be teaching schoolchildren about the symptoms of strokes andhaving them teach their parents as home-work,” Forteza said.

BY MICHAEL MILLER

After 84 years and 22 days, myfather, my dad, or as he preferred tobe called – Ron – called it a day. Hedied while sitting in his wheelchair,as his medicine was being prepared.

Years ago, Ron told me, “Do what-ever you want to do, and do your bestat it until you don’t want to do it any-more. And then, do something else.”

And that’s just what Ron did,and this philosophy served himwell right up to his dying moment.

Although he had suffered a strokein 1995, had limited use of one legand arm and could only speak a fewdozen words, he lived his last 17 yearswith vigor, strength and the determi-nation to live life to the fullest. Here’sa look back at his life…

THE EARLY DAYS: Ron, who was quite rambunctious and a tough guy even

in his early days, grew up in Chicago with his folks Daveand Alice Miller and his sister Elaine.

Ron attended the University of Chicago and although hedid not graduate, he was always a student and studied hisentire life. After leaving school he joined the army andserved for about a year.

While in the army, he honed his communication skills, and this was the beginning of his long-lasting love withradio, television and newspapers.

And then came the love of his life – my mother, FernTaube Larmen Miller. The two of them were childhoodsweethearts. They married, and before too long they hadfour boys, Scott, Michael, Jordan (deceased) and Grant.

A CAREER IS BORN:While living in Huntington, West Virginia, Ron had his

first radio show, worked at a newspaper, was on televisionand radio and his dreams were starting to come true.

His other dream was to live in Florida. He followed thatdream, moved the family to Miami and started looking for workin his chosen field. In the meantime, he sold cemetery plots andwas building a sales force. Then, his passion and determinationpaid off. He was offered a job at radio station, WEDR.

Within months, Ron started producing programs at WEDRand was the on-air personality for a show called The GospelTrain. In the late 50s and early 60s, he was also on Channel 7 asan anchor and reporter, and shared that space with Wayne Farris.

Around the same time, Ron bought the South DadeShopping News, a monthly newspaper that was started byJames Carey Martin in 1958. Ron grew the business and itbecame Miami’s Community Newspapers, with weeklynewspapers all over town.

Ron was a busy guy. At one point, he was on the radio, on TV,had a group of newspapers and a wife and four wild children.

Soon though, the TV gig came to an end, the radio stationwas sold and the format changed, and there he was with agroup of struggling weekly newspapers.

DOING THE RIGHT THINGRon’s radio show on WEDR was centered on black preach-

ers who discussed what was going on with their churches andwhat could be done to relieve the struggles that blacks were

experiencing in the late 1950s and 1960s.Ron loved helping those in need. He

was a true liberal and stood up for peo-ple, especially blacks. I recall manyoccasions when people would make dis-paraging remarks about blacks, Ronwould instantly respond, “My grandfa-ther was black.” And I have to tell you, Iwas proud of him for standing up andspeaking out, especially at a time whenrace riots were in full swing.

In the late 60s, he took me to aFreedom March in St. Augustine where Igot a first-hand look at seeing the whitebeaches being integrated. That was thefirst time my eyes were opened to thestruggle blacks were experiencing.

He was active in supporting the causes ofthe NAACP, the ACLU and other liberalorganizations, and served at the president ofthe First Unitarian Church of Miami.

Surely some of those ideals are imbedded in my brothersand me.

My affinity to helping people clearly came from myfather. I am very grateful that he talked the talk, walked thewalk and shared it with me and my brothers Grant and Scott.

FOR THE LOVE OF FAMILY:In 1970, tragedy struck and my brother Jordan, died in a

car crash. This was devastating for the entire family. Ron,though he rarely showed an emotional side, left the boys andperhaps my mother in an odd place of grief and sadness. Hestruggled to work through this tragedy. His carefree view ofthe world came crashing down.

My mother took the brunt of this family heartbreak andthe stress on her was enormous. Soon thereafter she wasdiagnosed with primary biliary cirrhosis. She told me sever-al times that she thought the stress of Jordan’s death causedher fatal illness.

When this happened, Ron essentially stopped workingand he and my mother moved to North Carolina. He took herto numerous doctors across the country and overseas, tryingtraditional and non-traditional treatments in search of a cure.Eventually, they came back to Miami where they had spentso many years together.

Ron clearly loved my mother, spent all of his time withher, and for sure kept her alive for many more years.

Soon after my mother’s death in 1979, Ron left Miamiand lived in Mexico and Spain for some years, and eventu-ally settled in West Palm Beach. After he had a stroke in1995, we brought him back to Miami so he could attendrehab at South Miami Hospital and be with family.

A FOND FAREWELL:Ron lived the life he wanted, played by his rules, taught

others to be compassionate, loved helping people and taughthis children to tell their children: I love you.

Dad – thanks for the lessons, thanks for being there. And, just as you wrote in so many of your letters to me –Carpe Diem.

So you can look into his soul and get a sense of whoRon Miller really was, I’m sharing a piece he wrote andread at the funeral of his wife Fern, my mother, at theFirst Unitarian Church of Miami in August 1979.

Fern, where have you gonewithout me? My heart breaks, myeyes redden, and I cry. My facecontorts, I sob. I need you andwant to be with you, but you’vegone away from me. You were thelove of my life all these years. Wehad a childhood romance thatnever ended – a romance thatstarted when we were 15, and diedonly when you did.

I can hardly move, or talk. I’mfrozen. My voice disappears and Ican barely squeak out soundswhen I think of you and yourdeath.

When you worsened two weeksago, for four terrible days, I knewyou were near the bottom, almostdead. But then, the next morning you came back.Chipper, smiling, alert … and I called you Warsaw, themost devastated city in Europe during World War II.And, then, we planned a rebuilding program of food andvitamins, psychic healing, coffee enemas, acupuncture, and the few things that orthodox medicine can offer tohelp you fight liver disease.

I told you that you would rise again. That you wouldbe stronger and healthier, whole and hearty, participatein society, and stay with us. I never faltered in mybelief, all these ten years of disease.

And you said we would die together in a crash, mean-ing that you wouldn’t die of the disease. We told eachother of the touching scene in the play “Albert and I,”which we saw in London, when Albert died in QueenVictoria’s arms, and she said, “Albert, I wouldn’t do thisto you.”

Fern, I wouldn’t do this to you – die without you – letyou live without me. I know you fought. I gave youstrength and courage. I massaged you and held you andput the strength of my hands and body on you to makeyou stronger. You were determined to live, you foughthard…

When you were incoherent, you responded to mewhen I told you that you have to become strong andhealthy again to be with us, to let me be with you.

When you were in a coma during your last day and half, when the liver failed, I pleaded with you, and cried overyour shriveling body, the tears running down my shirt andonto you, urging you to be strong and survive this.

And, you fought. You whispered “yes” through yourparched mouth, barely able to understand what I wassaying because the ammonia from your liver had creptinto your brain.

You said “yes.” You nodded, breathing hard withgreat effort – each breath like a bellow’s breath, in adying coma, telling me “yes.”

You had strength in your arms and in your legs dur-ing your last day and half, my wounded dove. Yourhead jerking, sometimes saying a word to the members

of our family, sometimes recogniz-ing us, wanting to be with us, butdying because your liver failed andthe poisons went everywhere inyou. You were losing weight everyday, your skin turning darker, yourhead becoming bonier, my love. Myheart broke when I saw what I saw, what was happening to you.

I rubbed the Vitamin E into yourbruised and parched lips so theywould heal, and wished that therewas something I could rub on yourskin that would heal your insides. Iwas helpless.

Ten years ago, you were told youhad six months to live. You told methe doctor’s diagnosis when we sattogether one Sunday morning atFuch’s Park, enjoying the lake, thegreenery and the ducks.

The doctors had, by their diagnosis, condemned youto die. You made a death trip across the nation toCapistrano, California, to talk with a retired 75-yearold physician, who told you “you aren’t as sick as theysay.” He told you to change your diet drastically.

You came back on a “new life” trip, ready to trysomething new to help you to live. And that was thefirst of many new ideas we investigated, many of whichyou tried.

Although you didn’t have strong beliefs in some, youdid accept them because I urged you. The effect of theseunorthodox procedures helped you to live ten years, even though orthodox medicine had virtually no meansto help people with this rare disease.

You were rare. Your conservative education as anurse and your respect to physicians, made it difficultfor you. You were willing to try the unorthodox and youwere determined to live … the final ingredient that keptyou here for ten years.

You were a jewel. So many devoted friends foundyou the ideal companion. I respected you so much forthat, and marveled at how people were drawn to you.

I am nothing without you. The best part of my life isgone. I was the lucky one. I found you early, and wasable to be with you for many years. Without you, I cry.I cry because you are gone and can no longer enjoy thefriends and relatives, the cities of the world, the peace-ful beloved countryside of Marshall, North Carolina. You were a crystal that shone … reflected goodness, joyand happiness. I love you so – more every year.

When you were in your final days and nights, Iwouldn’t let you die. I had to have you alive. I pouredstrength into you. I made you live. But, in the end, Ifailed. I’m so sad, so sad. You won’t be here. It is yourpresence I need. I shall miss you. I need you.

Fern, where have you gone without me? The best ofmy life has gone.

This eulogy was delivered by Ron Miller at the FirstUnitarian Church of Miami on August 17, 1979.
