German has two special particles: bis and als. Both may function as a conjunction:

� bis or (obsolete) bis dass means „until“ then: o Ich warte hier, bis du zurückkommst (I wait here, until you return)

„I will wait here until you return“ � als means „when“ for a unique event in the past:

o Als ich (gestern) aufgestanden bin, hatte ich Kopfweh (as I risen am, had I headache) „when I got up (yesterday), I had a headache“ (singular occurrence)

o (Immer) wenn ich aufgestanden bin, hatte ich Kopfweh (when I risen am...) „when(ever) I got up, I used to have a headache“ (repeated occurrence)

o Wenn ich zuhause bin, rufe ich dich an (when I home am, call I you to) „when I arrive home, I will phone you“ (occurrence in the future)

Except for this usage, both function as a particle, neither a preposition nor a conjunction:

� bis means „until, up to“. It must stand in front of an adverb: o Before a real adverb:

� bis heute until today � bis hierhin up to here, up to this point � seldom independently before cities/towns or time of day:

der Zug fährt bis (nach) Moskau this train goes up to Moscow ich warte bis (um) 5 Uhr I’ll wait until 5 o’clock

o Before a prepositional phrase: � bis zu meinem Geburtstag up to my birthday � bis nach Deutschland / Berlin up to Germany / Berlin � bis um 5 Uhr up to 5 o’clock � bis nach Mitternacht until after midnight

o bis zu means „up to, as much/many as“: � bis 50 m wasserdicht water-resistant to 50 m � bis zu einem gewissen Grad up to a certain point/extent/degree � bis zu den Knien im Wasser up to one’s knees in the water

o von ... bis means „from ... to“: � von Anfang bis Ende from first to last, „from soup to nuts“ � von morgens bis abends from morning to night � von A bis Z � von Mai bis September � von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite from cover to cover

� als has two meanings: o als „as“ (without article) before a noun indicates its function:

� ich komme als Freund I am coming as a friend � ich arbeite als Ka´ssierer I am working as a cashier � als Amateur [ama´tø:r] findet man keine Arbeit

as an amateur you won’t find a jobs (one does not find work) o als „than“ is used together with the comparative:

� er ist größer als ich he is taller than me / than I am � es ist besser, viel zu schlafen als müde zu sein

= besser viel schlafen als müde sein (it is) better to sleep a lot than to be tired

� lieber als „rather than, in preference to“: ich lerne lieber Chinesisch als Russisch I prefer to learn Chinese than to learn Russian

o als is not used in a balanced comparison: � er ist so groß wie ich he is as tall as me � er ist nicht so groß wie ich he is not so tall as I am
