Dictionaries Distributed to Third Graders

“Tuesday, October 17 was our club's 14th year funding The Dictionary Project. In total, we have distrib-

uted approximately 1,850 dictionaries to third graders in our community. The goal of this program is to

assist all third grade students to complete the school year as good writers, active readers and creative think-

ers by providing the students with their own personal dictionaries. The dictionaries are a gift to each student

to use at school and at home for years to come. Our club includes a personalized sticker in the front cover

along with the four way test and place to write their name. This year, 120 dictionaries were distributed to

third graders at Geneseo and York Elementary as well as Genesee Country Christian School. We continue

to fund this program because we believe that in this era of iPads and Google Classroom, the best education

still comes from reading books and increasing our vocabulary. Reading makes a community and a country

great. It is the most important skill of all. It is the starting point for all the economic and social opportuni-

ties this world has to offer. Words are how we connect with the world. A strong vocabulary is important

for gaining knowledge because this is the only way people have of sharing their ideas and thoughts through

communication." (Submitted by PP Sue Crilly) Photos on next page.

Thanks to PP Sue for making the arrangements for the distribution and Pres. Steve for making copies of

the bookplates which were pasted into the books by Geneseo Middle School students. Thanks also to

everyone who assisted at the schools.

Keyboard Kamp News

There are 16 children signed on with a SUNY college

student for lessons. 2 have not begun because of

sports or challenges in family scheduling.

I will be using up the balance of the Livingston Arts

Grant this month in getting a gift certificate from

Buzzo's in order to purchase instruction books as

needed between now and when the next possible

grant is received in Spring 2018.

Thank you Rotary for your support of Keyboard

Kamp. You are greatly appreciated.

Rotaract Club News

The club will be volunteering at the food

pantry again mid November to help set

up with food deliveries. We'll also be tak-

ing a family to buy a meal for as well!

Kathleen (the lady I've been in touch

with for the food drive) asked if we

could help her on October 30 with

stuffing and labeling envelopes as well,

which we are planning to do.
