Q.1 How were the Moderates different from the Radicals?

Ans. Moderates were different from the Radicals in the following ways :-

1. They believed in pleading with the British to bring about reforms.

They wanted to oppose the British strongly. They wanted direct action with the support of the people.

2. Moderates believed in meetings and speeches to draw the attention of the British Government.

Radicals were in favour of strikes and boycotts.

3. Prominent leaders of this group were Dadabhai Naoroji and Gopal Krishna Gokhale

Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal were the three leaders of Radical Group.

Q.2 Why did the British decide to partition Bengal?

Ans. Partition of Bengal was an attempt to prevent Hindus and Muslims from uniting against the British. At that time, one part of Bengal (western) consisted mainly of Hindu population and the other (eastern) Muslim. The British thus wanted to divide the Hindus and the Muslims.

Q.3 Why did Gandhiji withdraw the Non-Cooperation Movement?

Ans. The Non-Cooperation Movement was launched by Gandhiji in 1920. The ultimate goal was to attain freedom by peaceful means. However, in 1922 when the people became violent at Chauri Chaura in Uttar Pradesh and killed 22 policemen, Gandhiji withdrew the movement immediately because he believed very strongly in the policy of non-violence.

Q.4 What was the contribution of Subhas Chandra Bose to our national movement?

Ans. Subhas Chandra Bose formed the Indian National Army (INA) or Azad Hind Fauj. The aim was to free India from the British rule. He fought against the British. He gave us the slogan “Jai Hind”.
