1. Bioinformatics Core at AGERIPresent and FutureByOsama A. MomtazDirectorGenetic Engineering Research Institute,Agricultural research Center, Ministry of AgricultureEgypt 2. Establishment The Agricultural Genetic Engineering Research Institute(AGERI) represents a vehicle within the agriculturalarena for the transfer and application of geneticengineering technology. The institute started in 1989 as a UNDP funded projectcalled the National Agricultural Genetic EngineeringLaboratory (NAGEL). 3. EstablishmentAgricultural GeneticEngineering ResearchInstitute (AGERI)represents a vehicle within theagricultural arena for thetransfer and application ofbiotechnology and geneticengineering future sciences. 4. Bioinformatics CoreA N e w E r aAs a new era of biotechnology isemerging, a high-throughputinstruments now is available to helpdecipher complex biological systems. Its a cornerstone for any successfulscientific organization dealing withbiotechnology to have a goodBioinformatics core to decipher andinterpretate information embedded incomplex biological systems speciallyas it continue to grow. 6. VisionWe envision that our program will develop into aresearch-based and educational hub in AGERI aswill as border region to provide bioinformaticsand computational support for researchcommunity and perform training forbioinformatics, through our Bioinformatics Core. 7. Scientific Development AGERI has become the premier biotechnologyresearch institution in Egypt by developing ahighly trained research staff through: international education and training programs recruitment of top researchers from Egypts best universities collaboration with international agricultural biotechnologyfirms1990 2010 2020Scientific DevelopmentInstitutional Development AGERI is now entering a new phase in itsdevelopment focusing on establishing anew bioinformatics core to help deciphercomplex biological systems.Phase IPhase II 8. Current situationHardwareBioinformatics department now has: Three servers hosting two webpage AGERI web page:http://www.ageri.sce.eg ARDF web page:http://www.ardf.sci.eg 9. Current situationSoftware Bioinformatics Department isusing several type of software:E.g. R-pakage, Emboss, genepix, Hex,studan package, PERL,Diversity database, Bio-linux,mapmaker, WEKA,velvet, SPDBV. 10. Current situationHardware The three server is also used to e.g. analyzemicroarray data, Statistical analysis for severalexperiment, clustering several type ofexperimental data. We also have an 80 core cluster computer to dealwith NGS data generated from our Solidsequencing facility. 11. Using I&C Technology: providingplatform Any fields, really, but newer biological fields are moreinterestingBioinformaticsDNA computing (Bioprocessors) Special fields of interestGenome Annotations Molecular breeding simulation programs Target output: ICT show case, infrastructure forother research centers, and training 12. Future Prespictive To decipher and interpretate information embedded incomplex biological systems bioinformatics departmentlooking forward to have another cluster computerallocated only to data analysis. Also bioinformatics department is looking forward toreceive some essential soft ware to help in dataanalysis e.g. CLC genome work bench, Geneious.
