Biographies of MBI 2011 Participants AGUILAR, Ricardo Director of Projects and Research for Oceana - Europe Ricardo Aguilar is the Research Director in Europe of the International Marine Conversation Organization, Oceana. From his position he has published at least 20 reports and scientific papers about marine habitats and fisheries. He coordinates all of Oceana’s research projects for the study and protection of the marine environment on board of Oceana Ranger catamaran with a ROV and professional staff in the area of Europe: the impact of trawling on ecosystems of the seafloor; accidental captures of marine species; pollution caused by hydrocarbons, heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants; the state of the deep sea coral population, elasmobranches and deep sea fish, among others. His professional career is characterized by intense research activity for the conservation of natural resourcesespecially in the marine environmentthrough campaigns and scientific projects of national and international scope, he has given more than 500 conferences and courses related to environmental problems and has participated in seminars and conferences in more than 30 countries. Ricardo Aguilar has collaborated and worked with international organisations and international conventions. Also, Aguilar was Campaign Director for Greenpeace Spain, unifying under his directorship all research involving several different branches such as marine biology, pollution, forests, energy, climate change and disarmament. ALLEMAND, Denis Scientific Director of the Scientific Centre of Monaco - Monaco Prof. Denis ALLEMAND is a biologist with particular research experience on comparative physiology (mainly marine organisms such as sea urchins, cnidarians, coccolithophorides). His primary present interest is the study of Coral Physiology (over 70 papers published in this area) with particular emphasis on both biomineralization and symbiosis. He is interested in the mechanism of formation of coral skeleton and more particularly on the i) the physiology of skeletogenesis and interaction with symbiosis ii) the mechanism of regulation of ion transport during skeletogenesis, iii) the characterization and role of organic matrix molecules present within the biomineral, iv) the effect of ocean acidification on skeletogenesis. Concerning symbiosis, he is interested in the mutual adaptation of both partners (animal host and zooxanthellae) to the symbiotic state, and more particularly to the molecular and genomic relationship between zooxanthellae and their host. He studied the role of the host in the supply of inorganic carbon for zooxanthellae photosynthesis and more recently the mechanism of adaptation of symbiotic cnidarians to environmental stress (thermal, UV)-induced oxidative stress, and more particularly on antioxidant enzymes (catalase and superoxide dismutases), damage biomarker, apoptosis. For these goal, his team developed physiological, biochemical, molecular and more recently genomic (DNA arrays) approaches. He has supervised 12 PhD students and is the co-author of 106-refered papers and numerous book chapters. He organized the 7th International Symposium on Biomineralization in Monaco in November 17-20, 1993 and was the editor of the four volumes of proceedings. He is teaching general biology, comparative physiology, symbiosis and parasitology. CHARVOZ, Sylvie President of Mayotte Aquaculture, Cannes Aquaculture - France Born in Cannes in 1961, Sylvie Charvoz undertook Business and Marketing Management studies (Sophia Antipolis), before achieving a diploma on in-depth studies in Communication (Nice University), postgraduate airport management training (Ecole nationale d’Aviation Civile – Toulouse), and a course in Political Sciences (Institut Universitaire d’Etudes du Development – Geneva). She joined the team that created Cannes Aquaculture in 1988, one of the first open-sea farms, later campaigning for sustainable fish farming practices. The Ecloserie Marine de Monaco at the base of the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco provides headquarters for fish birthing and farming. Sylvie Charvoz is working to achieve the labels BIO AB (France) and BIO Sourgeon (Switzerland) for the farm. She is also working closely with partner Mayotte Aquaculture, created by her brother Rémy Charvoz (ex-VAT IFREMER in Martinique). To develop sustainable Mayotte fish farming, Rémy, Sylvie and their mother Janie Charvoz have begun to train and integrate Mahorais youths during school breaks and were impressed with the teaching efforts by GSMA (Groupement de Service Militaire Adapté). She is now actively encouraging entrepreneurs to take part in the educational and social efforts of GSMA in overseas territories to improve development of those regions. She is also taking part in work at the “Pole de Competitivité” PACA sea. Dr. Cicin-Sain is the organizer, Co-Chair, and Head of Secretariat of the Global Forum on Oceans, Coasts, and Islands, initially mobilized in 2001 to place issues related to oceans, coasts, and island states on the agenda of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development and to agree on a detailed set of global ocean targets and timelines. Since 2001, the Global Forum has brought together ocean leaders from governments, nongovernmental organizations, UN agencies, the private sector, and scientific associations from more than 110 countries in “informal diplomacy” efforts to promote the implementation of international ocean agreements, analyze emerging policy issues, and advance international consensus on unresolved ocean issues. Dr. Cicin-Sain’s international ocean work has been recognized through a number of awards, including: 2010 Laureate for the Elizabeth Haub Award for Environmental Diplomacy, typically given to key diplomatic figures which have made a significant contribution in advancing specific aspects of international law and policy; 2010 award of an honorary doctorate in maritime law by Korea Maritime University; 2007 recipient of the Coastal Zone Foundation Award (USA); 2007 recipient of the Elizabeth Mann Borgese Meerespreis (Prize of the Sea, given by the Ministry of Science, Economics and Transport of the Land Schleswig-Holstein in Germany); and 2002 co-recipient of the Ocean and Coastal Stewardship (given by the California and the World Ocean Conference).

COUSTEAU, Pierre-Yves President of Cousteau Divers - France Pierre-Yves Cousteau, 28 years old, President of Cousteau Divers. Youngest son of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, studied biochemistry and space studies (both at masters level) before working for NASA and the European Space Agency as scientific coordinator for biology experiments in space. Passionate for the ocean since childhood, became a scubadiving instructor and joined the Cousteau Society in 2009 to develop the Cousteau Divers program. The Cousteau Divers program is a participative science, multimedia and community program to actively involve recreational divers in the study and preservation of marine environments worldwide. Cousteau Dive Centers will become permanent marine observatories worldwide, spearheading the development of marine protected areas. Divers are the only "users" of the beauty of the oceans. That same beauty is hence the business of dive centers. It is in the interest of the recreational diving community to have pristine marine environments. Cousteau Divers invites divers, dive centers and marine scientists to join under the legacy of Jacques Cousteau for the protection of our seas. This structure has provided help and support in the development of many innovative projects as well as in the organization of events of global significance such as BioVision – a world forum on life, BioSquare – a business convention, and finally in 2007 and 2008 : BioMarine. Given the success of BioMarine, it was jointly decided that Pierre Erwes, founder of the event and owner of the trademark, would develop it under an independent structure. In January 2009, he started BioTopics SAS, a company at the crossroads of research, business, and investment. It operates and manages several international platforms about marine bio resources and marine issues- with a scientific, economic and societal approach, and is designed to optimize and accelerate business opportunities and the development of small innovative companies.
