Principal’s Report

We welcome the rain at last! Play at Binya PS is all around the nice moist sand in the sand pit. It’s always heart-warming to see the children all play together, regardless of age, stage or gender.

I would like to thank our amazing parent group for your willingness to help out at school. Thankyou Kate Curran and Wendy Bianchini for cleaning out the Kidz Konnect Shed for the start of the year. We have also had a clean up of school resources, and appreciated Kate’s organisation in sorting our dress ups- we look forward to using them in class soon. We’ve also had a great ‘on-call’ group of dads who have be proactive in the maintenance of our trees in the playground.

Focus Meetings will again be held with each family in week 5. Mrs Foy and myself look forward to meeting with each student and their families to set goals for the semester. We will send a note home for booking requests next week.

Good luck to our swimmers next Thursday at the Small School’s Swimming Carnival in Griffith. Mrs Foy will be attending with the Years 2-6. Kinder and Year 1 to school as normal.

Our school counsellor Ms Erika Ellis will be at school on Monday.

Lunch and Recess This term we will be changing our eating/play breaks. School will start at 9am with fitness and fruit break followed by the morning session. Lunch will be at 11.10- 12pm. Recess will be at 1.30-1.50pm. End of school is at 3pm. Benefits include: providing the longer play break earlier in the day to avoid the heat; eating our more nutritious meal first to sustain brain power for middle session; a more substantial lunch earlier in the day as many children have breakfast early. Children may like to pack an afternoon snack for bus lines if they need additional food. HATS and Sun safety Your child may like to take their hats home to wash and freshen up, however please ensure they bring it for recess and lunchtime. We enforce a ‘no hat play in the shade’ policy. Students also should ensure they come to school with sunscreen on, and perhaps pack a small roll on to ‘re-apply’ at lunch time. Please ensure all items are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Water bottles Please ensure that a water bottle is packed every day. Students can refill as required through out the day from the water cooler.

Fridge Don’t forget the fridge is available for students to use over summer months. Please discuss with your

child the need to label/identify their own lunch to ensure no mix-ups and to bring a drink bottle each day. Thank you.

Science unit Wow! I didn't know that there were so many stages in life cycles? There's so much to learn. I have been in the library learning about life cycles of frogs and caterpillars. We had to make posters and label them with Mrs. Foy’s printed sheets that had all the stages. We had to cut it out, paste it in in order and find out what frogs look like before they're frogs. We have to now make our own life cycle poster with glue, scissors and paper. I would like to do a Komodo Dragon. By Tom Curran

Small Schools activity day for infants

The small school trials was not just for the primary, but it was also fun for the infants. All of the infants including George, Isla, Chloe, Hugh, Cooper, Henry, Catherine, Jessica and Noah all played games. They did skipping, jumping, hopping and rolling. They created friends hand prints! They did their own and then wrote their friends' names in there. They also coloured in owls. All of them said that lunch was great- they had chicken burgers and steak sandwiches. Their teachers were Mrs Hunt, Mrs Rowston and Mrs Rinaldo. After lunch the infants had a disco and it was very hot. They also played dead fish. At the end of the day all of the infants were very tired and would have had a great sleep that night! By Millie

NRL Visit What I thought was going to be throwing a footy and running around outside, turned out to be talking about respecting other people and yourself? Turns out NRL is more than just footy skills. One of the other things that they said was, “Throw the ball the way you would like to receive

it.” So that means if you say something mean to someone, they would want to say something mean back... so if you are nice they will be nice to you. This really fitted in to our class rules.

The NRL has values and they do one a year; this year is respect . They want to teach people to respect themselves and others. It’s a great start for everyone to get along. By Max

Small Schools Trials We really hoped I would make one of the teams. All the small schools came together to meet at Yoogali PS to have all our team sports team trials in one day. We nervously sat down to listen for our names to go to each of the trials. The sports included- Cricket, Soccer, Rugby League, AFL, touch, Netball and Tennis. We did plenty of drills and met our old friends. Each sport had a special coach, like Jack Rowston for AFL and Mr Dochety for NRL for example. They were the selectors. After a big day of lots of sports we went home exhausted. We received an email today to announce the teams. Many of our students were picked in many sports. Congratulations to the following people: Touch- Charlie, Max and Millie; AFL- Max, Tom, Charlie and Millie; Netball- Millie; Tennis- Millie; Mortimer Shield- Max, Tom, Charlie and Millie; Cricket- Max and Charlie; Soccer- Max, Charlie and Natalie and Ella; Trent Barrett Shield- Jonty, Natalie and Ella. (Boys and girls teams) We are all very excited for the knockouts later in the year. By Charlie and Jonty

Science and Measurement by Macey

Would you think a growing spring onion would be a math measurement activity? That’s what we’ve been doing in 3-6 Maths with Mrs Foy. It was a tiny little plant with roots at the end. We put it in a plastic cup with some water for it to grow. Every day we measured it with rulers or string. We had to measure using centimetres and millimetres. I was surprised by how quickly it grew- soon it was over the top of the cup, so we had to put another cup over the top to let it keep growing. It was 4.5cm when we started, and the roots were 1.5cm, sitting in 30mL of water. Now it measures 26.0cm! It’s been fun doing measurement with spring onions.

Class rules

We need rules! What should they be? We need rules because without rules we would be pretty chaotic! For example without rules we would be standing on tables being absolutely ridiculous! But with rules we would be sitting on chairs being quiet and sensible. Some other rules would be... hands off, no swear words and if you get cranky don't take it out on someone else. Be kind, listen to the teacher (don't talk while the teacher is talking, and listen to the person that is talking) respect people and property. Use kind actions and words, enjoy learning and try your best. Safely work and play. That's why we should have class rules... Now we are safely, and sensibly ready to learn.
