A Paim and coatings plant thatproduces both cationic paste

ers without pigmencs for truck shipmemto automodve OEMs was experiencingdifficulties when rransferring the compounds from mobile tanks to trucks.

In particular, its pumps were incapable of totally draining the pipes, hosesand mobile tanks used in rhe process, leading to wasted time and materials, aswell as an increase in the probability ofleakage occurring. Because the trucks ateloaded with cationic bindet from mobiletanks, meaning frequent human involvement, the plant operators were looking[Q upgrade to a pump that would makethe overall operation cleaner and moreefficient.

Because of the unique types ofbinders that are handled, as well as theoperators' requirements for clean, timesensitive performance, a versatile pumpneeded to be incorporated-one rhat was sealless and provided Jow shear, clean-in-place capabilities and high volumetricefficiencies.

performance over time through the use of a self-adjusringdisc/cylinder

Because of rhe latter characteristic, eccentric disc pumpscan be used as dosing pumps. Since the pump is automaticallyself-adjusting, ir maintains greater efficiency and repeatabilityover time rhan tradirionallobe or gear pumps.

All rhe pumps installed have a shear rate of rate of sec'! =

0.9 rpm, which is lower than other types ofpumps used in paint and coatings applications. This is due in parr to the gentle, lowvelocity action of the disc and cylinder, andthe extremely low slip rate of the pump.Unlike other rechnologies, eccentric discpumps do not have required clearancesthar can cause slip, which is the portionof the pumped product forced back to thesuccion side of rhe pump due ro pressurerhrough rhe clearances. The discharge pressure exerts itself againsr the eccentric discin a way rhat assists in mainraining axialcontact with the cylinder, thus mitigaringthe usual effecr that discharge pressure has

on slip in pumps. It is this low slip between the disc and cylinder rhat gives the pump the ability to self-prime and line srrip.

The eccemric disc pump can handle viscosiries of up to

10,000 Cp, working pressures up to 130 psi (9 bar), capacitiesof 4 ro 158 gpm, operating remperatures up to 176 deg F anda particle-size range of 1 to 3 mm.

The pump's particular clean-in-place (CIP) rechnologyholds 3A Approval Certification and is designed per EuropeanHygienic Equipment Design Group (EHEDG) specificationsro be Bushed and cleaned in place.

be inefficienr and require high maintenance, increasing theircotal cost of ownership.

• Gear Pumps-The second most popular pump choicebehind AODs due co their capabilicy of handling higherviscosity ranges. Gear pumps can have excessive seal leakage;

When installed for CIP operation, it experiencesno loss of performance due co vercical drain porcing, unlike a rotary lobe pump. When cleaning, pressure is introduced to the back of the eccentric discthrough the pump chamber. When the flush pressure overcomes the spring, the disc rnoves away fromthe cylinder, allowing the cleaning solution to passthrough the pumping chamber. This feature allowsa relatively large volume of cleaning fluid ro sweepthrough the pump, providing a thorough cleaningand often eliminating the need for bypass piping forthe CIP mode.

Where maintenance is concerned, eccentric discpumps consist of few parts. The cylinder-disc assembly can be replaced without disrurbing the suctionpiping or drive componenrs.

Eccentric Disc Technology versusOthersBecause of all of these characteristics, eccentric discpumps can supply benefirs [hat some pumps traditionally usedin the paint and coatings market sector cannot:• Air-Operated Diaphragm (AOD) Pumps---AODs have

traditionally been the pump of choice in the P&C markerbecause of their low initial plll'chase cosr. However, they can

ConclusionAI! eccentric disc pump is a multi-use pieceof equipment, meaning that it can be llsedin many applications. In the paint andcoatings industry, that could include thepumping of pigments, resins, solvents andadditives.

These capabilities help make eccentricdisc technology a solution for the challenges of addressing pump seal, suction, product shear and volumetric efficiencyconcerns. Through the incorporation ofleak-free operation and line-stripping capabilities, the eccentric disc principle makesthe pump flexible, allowing the pumpingof low-viscosiry, high-viscosiry and highlyabrasive materials within a single processand with the same pump. The pump is notonly a longer lasting, more efficielll pieceof equipment, but also a multi-taskingone. It might be the answer for many difficult pumping applications in the paint andcoatings industry.

inabiliry to self prime; a flow rate thatis jeopardized when wear begins; highinternal velocities that affect fluiddynamics, resulting in shear; and clearances that result in slip as pressutesincrease and viscosities decrease.

• Centrifugal Pumps-Centrifugalpumps can have a high rate of slippage. Some centrifugal pumps have lowerefficiencies than eccentric disc pumps.

• Lobe Pwnps--Lobe-rype pumpsperform like gear pumps, meaning theycan have many of the same drawbacksthat gear pumps have. The need to sealtwO shafts doubles the expense of sealsand the potential for leakage.
