We would especially like to welcome our new Year 7 and Year 12 pupils and our new staff. We hope you have settled in well and are looking forward to your time at Winchmore School. We believe that, as with most things, the more you put into the experience, the more you are likely to get out of it. We would also like to congratulate our students and our staff for their brilliant GCSE results, which are yet again the best ever in the history of the school. The fact that we can consistently improve our GCSE results year on year shows how hard our students and staff work and what a great school we have. Many governors attended the recent Open Evening and were impressed by the number of people who attended. Most parents and students told us how much they liked the school and its ethos. A typical comment was: "This is where we want our daughter to come, we have heard so many fantastic things about this school." We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who worked so hard to put on such a great Open Evening. Finally we would like tell you about some changes to the governing body. We are delighted to welcome three new co-opted governors, Ms.Tallyia Charalambous (a teacher at the school), Ms. Linda Groarke (a former Winchmore student) and Ms. Sian McDermott (a teacher at another school). We also say a sad farewell to Mrs Naomi Franks and Mrs Iolanthe Rodman. We would like to thank them for their contribution to the governing body over the last year. Free school meAls And the pupil premium

If you think that you may be eligible for free school meals for your child/ren, we would be very grateful if you would proceed with an application. The number of children eligible for free school meals has an impact on school funding as well as enabling you to claim your entitlement. This helps us to maximise the support we can offer to all our students, and should help your family budget, as your child would be able to purchase items from the school catering service.

As you are aware we have a completely refurbished restaurant offering a wide range of products available. If you prefer to provide your child with a packed lunch we would still recommend that you use your entitlement to purchase healthy eating items such as fruit, snacks or drinks to supplement what you provide.

However it is now very quick and easy to check eligibility for free school meals, as we are part of a new ‘Free School Meals / Pupil Premium Service’ available at www.fsm.lgfl.net. This web site allows you to check eligibility instantly.

After entering essential details into the web site, the online application process links to the Department for Education system and gives you an immediate ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response, and will notify us.

This will increase the benefit to our school from Pupil Premium funding. Please be aware that currently substantial amounts of potential funding does not reach schools, because not all parents who are eligible apply for the free meals.

By way of an additional ‘thank you’ to parents and carers for using this enquiry facility, regardless of individual outcomes, the London Grid for Learning (LGfL) would like to offer you Sophos Anti-Virus software, free of charge, to protect home computers used by pupils.

To gain access to this software there is a short registration process which will also give you access, if required, to other LGfL services and benefits that are available to your child’s school. Please be assured that there is no catch, no cost and no advertising. LGfL is a UK education charity set up in 2001 and owned by London’s 33 local authorities, which exists to support education and is leading this initiative to make it easier for parents to apply for free school meals and to improve the situation of unclaimed Pupil Premium.

Thank you in advance for your support and participation. If you have any queries or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

the illuminAted river competition shortlisted school

We are pleased to announce that our school is one of five shortlisted schools in this exciting competition organised by the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. Back in June we submitted our design proposals for the schools competition running parallel to this international design competition.

Our design team consists of 7 A level Art students: Anjumon Ali, Yasemin Aslan, Haniyeh Khaleghi, Shaima Madabukus, Stepan Neokleous and James Nicolas. We are now in phase two, refining our designs and turning them into an animation with artist in residence Josh Knowles.

The shortlisted entries including ours will go on public exhibition at The Royal Festival Hall, Southbank in November before the winner is announced the following month.

Turner Prize-winning artist Chris Ofili is among the finalists shortlisted for a £20million scheme to show London’s historic bridges in a new light. More than 100 design teams from around the world entered the Illuminated River International Design Competition.

The six finalists will go on to develop new lighting schemes to transform four bridges – Westminster, Waterloo, London and Chelsea – along with a masterplan for all 17 bridges between Albert and Tower.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “The Illuminated River will breathe new life into the Thames and create a dazzling outdoor gallery for Londoners to enjoy each night, showing that our capital remains a leader in innovation, sustainability and artistic creativity.

Congratulations to our team for getting to this stage and we wish them the very best of luck. We will update you in our next newsletter.

the big creAte

During the next academic year we are applying to become a Platinum Artsmark school. In order to achieve the Platinum Award we must be able to demonstrate the following:

• Evidence of a clear commitment to CPD in the diversity of arts and culture for all members of staff and have allocated appropriate resources to enable this to happen

• The value and impact of the diverse arts and culture curriculum is firmly embedded in the school’s curriculum and offer across all phases

• A diverse and universal offer of wide ranging, high-quality arts and culture experiences within and beyond the school day

• Active promotion of diversity and a life-long love for learning and enjoyment of arts and culture. This is reflected in our environment, ethos, and shared language used by the whole school community to celebrate and promote achievements in arts and culture

Monday 10th to Friday 14th October was our whole school Arts Week called ‘The Big Create’ and staff had been working hard since

our INSET day on ‘Creativity’ planning a range of exciting lessons across the curriculum for our students with cross-curricular links:

• Literacy & Art• Learning Walls & Classroom Environment• ICT & Art• Confident Public Speakers• Using Music as a Memory Aid• Gestures, Dance, Performance & Use of Space

From the self-evaluation of the week so far, staff felt that there had been a significant impact in student engagement and behaviour, judged overall to be excellent/outstanding: students loved the creative tasks and showed improved levels of concentration and understanding through visual and practical arts techniques. Staff will be continuing to develop and embed creativity into their lessons throughout the year. Below is just a small sample of the variety of ways staff delivered ‘Creativity’ through the arts in their lessons and feedback.

• Black History Month, arrival of Empire Windrush – picture starter with word book, video clip and song into students creating their own Rap. The Raps were amusing, memorable, emotive and musical

• Teach me, tell me, and tell me more cards to develop shooting skills in PE. Knowledge, skills and understanding were developed through peer coaching

AttendAnceparents and carers – important information

The Government and Local Authority have made it a top priority or ALL children to attend school, every day and on time. The Government expects that your child attends at least 95% of the academic year. All absences must be explained and accounted for, and authorised by the school. If your child has excessive amounts of time off due to illness, we may ask you to provide medical evidence. Excessive amounts of unauthorised absence will lead to a referral to the Education Welfare Service.

• If your child is going to be absent you must let us know as soon as possible, preferably in advance, and in writing, so it may be authorised

• For unforeseeable absence please call the school as soon as possible on 020 8360 7773 (available 24 hours a day) and follow the instructions on the answer machine.

• If your child does not arrive at school and we have not been informed of reason, we will contact you by text. If absence remains unexplained, we will follow this up with a letter. Unexplained absences are unauthorised.

• We strongly advise you to take all medical appointments and family holidays outside of the school day. • Should you need to collect your child early for an appointment, please advise the school the day before

and write a note in the child’s student planner so they can be excused from the lesson. Your child will then need to sign out at the Attendance Office and meet you in the reception area. It is not the school’s responsibility to collect your child from lesson. Please also be aware students in Year 7, 8 & 9 will need to be collected by a parent, they are NOT allowed to leave unaccompanied.

• We are unable to authorise holidays during term time. The government has changed its regulations and can issue you with a Penalty Notice fine should you take your child out of school without permission. Requests must be made in writing to Mr Owen, who is only able to authorise if there are exceptional circumstances for the request.

The following reasons are not accepted as grounds for your child to miss school or arrive late:

• Shopping • Birthdays • Bad weather• Going to the airport • Waking up late • Traffic• Keeping your child off all day for a morning or afternoon medical appointment

Please familiarise yourself with our school's Late Procedure, set out on the next page.

The Year 7 netball team played 3 matches at St. Annes School. Against St. Annes Winchmore won 11-0 with Sophia Rodman scoring 10 goals and Nathalie Murray-Lockett scoring 1. These two players were awarded Players of the Match. Daisy Dookheran, Angelika Santaniello, Rebecca Felsenstein, Michelle Clift, Lois Hobbs, Wiam Halhoul Kaffal, Lilly Murray, Lucy Button and Courtney Chisvo all played well in all three matches.

Winchmore then played Latymer B and won 9-0, again brilliant shooting from Sophia and great support play by Nathalie and Angelika.

But the toughest match against Latymer A was the closest, with goals going with Centre passes 2-2, then 3-3, then 4-4, then brilliant person to person marking from Lucy Button against their GA, prevented her scoring any more goals and Sophia and Nathalie scoring more. Winchmore won 6-4. Some excellent centre passes from Lilly also helped the win, with some great tipping from Daisy and Angelika. Well done girls.

On the 26th of September we celebrated the European Day of Languages.

We had a fantastic selection of dishes cooked by Chef Sean and the restaurant team. The menu included Beef Goulash from Germany, Patatas españolas from Spain and Crepes Suzette from France. Many students and staff commented on how much they enjoyed the food that day.

We also had a competition for all forms where students had to write “ My name is ___________ and I love learning languages at Winchmore” in as many languages as they could. The winner of the competition was 10.4MDI, Mrs De Longhi’s form, who had a grand total of 17 different languages in their class.

Well done to them and everyone who entered! It’s great to remember how diverse our school actually is and recognise how talented some of our bi or even tri-lingual students are!

geogrAphy trip to wAlton-on-the-nAze

Winchmore’s Year 11 Geography GCSE groups went to Walton-on-the-Naze in Essex, the purpose of this trip to Walton was to see how they manage their coastal erosion. It was a 2-hour journey, it was surely worth the wait. When we arrived to Walton we got some background information on Walton’s coast from a woman that worked in the Naze tower.

Naze Tower The Naze Tower was one of the first things my group and I visited. It had around five to six floors. There was a café, tea room, art gallery, history of Naze tower and then from the top of the tower you can see the rock sea defences and also the town.

What did we do?After we visited the tower we started asking people questions and fill out surveys. Next we looked at the coastal defences then went to the wooden groynes. We measured the groynes however a certain student lost the results. Fortunately the group before didn’t lose their results. We got in our own groups and visited the town.

Why did we go?We went to Walton for our controlled assessment, we got the people there to answer the questions on the survey and this was used to make charts of the results. We got a first person view of the coast and how much damage there was before the sea defences were made.

Final thoughts This trip was 10 out of 10. This trip truly changed

my view on Geography and I would recommend more people to pick Geography. You can’t learn Geography just by text books but by actually seeing the real deal, I believe many would agree.

HOST FAMILIES REQUIRED Tuesday 17th January to Friday 20th January 2017

Once again we are delighted to be inviting students and staff from our partner school in China near Hong Kong to Winchmore School in January 2017. We would like them to stay with host families from Winchmore School. There will be a payment of £20 per day for each host family to cover any expenses. There are huge benefits for everybody involved in exchange visits. Students are able to learn another language, visit famous landmarks and see life from a different perspective. Moreover, staying with a host family enables our youngsters to experience a different culture at first hand, and through the exchange, many establish friendships for life. As we plan this exchange in January, you may be interested to know that we are also starting to plan our return visit to China for Winchmore students. Although the dates for the return visit to China have yet to be confirmed, we are expecting the visit to take place before the October half term holiday 2017.

If you feel that you would be able to accommodate a Chinese student as a

host family, or are interested in your child visiting China in 2017 please speak to Mr Thompson or Mrs Gibson
