BIKE EXPO MAINTAINS SUCCESSFUL TREND

BIKE EXPO offered a clear and homoge-nous platform for the entire cycling indus-try thanks to its new segmentation into Electro, Urban, Mountain, and Road Bikes. 301 exhibitors presented more than 390 brands from the bike, components, apparel and tourism sectors. 6,500 visiting industry professionals from more than 50 countries benefi ted from the theme-oriented hall layout, simplifying orientation and market overview.

LONG TEST TRACKS WITH UPHILL AND DOWNHILL GRADIENTS

Hannes NeupertGeneral Manager ExtraEnergy e. V.“As a conceptual partner, ExtraEnergy is pleased to observe that this fairly new trade show has once again expan-ded its electro segment, and is gaining additional depth and profi le in this promising market. Our Test IT track and the information program were very well received and will bring con-siderably movement into the market - not just on a symbolic level.”

Uwe Lehnert Head of Distribution,myStromer“Our +STROMER- received enor-mously positive feedback at the ExtraEnery test track. Some consu-mers had to wait up to 20 minutes to get their hands on an +STROMER-, even though we had ten demo bikes available. The testers were so im-pressed that they kept saying: „You just have to demo the +STROMER-!“ so often, that even many of our co-exhibitors came to take their turn on our bikes.”

The world of cycling has been electrifi ed! An increasing number of cyclists – from commuters to mountain bikers – have discovered motor-assisted bikes. BIKE EXPO has focused on this trend since its inception; this year was no dif-ferent, and industry and public were literally electrifi ed.

ELECTRIFIED TRADE SHOW

A low buzzing sound fi lled the E-Mobility hall at BIKE EXPO. The sound of electric motors was heard everywhere, proof of the increasing fascination with this new type of bike. More than twice as many exhibitors as in 2010 presented their latest develop-ments and designs. The Check-In booths at the Test IT track were completely booked. The specially designed circular track by conceptual sponsor ExtraEnergy e.V. attrac-ted more than 2,500 consumers and manyindustry professionals took the opportunity for a hands-on test of these electrical mar-vels. Manufacturers provided more than 100 demo bikes to let riders experience the built-in tailwind on the track with an integrated 50-meter ramp.

Busy E-Mobility HallFrom its inception BIKE EXPO has dedica-ted an entire exhibit hall to E-Mobility, in which the e-bike market could be presented in an all-encompassing yet compact man-ner. The busy exhibition space and high visitor frequency of this year’s event once again validated this decision and are a po-

sitive indication for the future. The variety and range of the exhibited products show-ed the potential of this new technology. These days, electric motors can be found on all types of bicycles, from city to moun-tain bikes. This development has made e-bikes and pedelecs socially acceptable: the old-new bike segment is experiencing a boom like never before.

Trend E-BikeIn 2010, 40% more e-bikes were sold in Europe than during the prior year – a total of 700,000 units. In Germany the number of e-bike and pedelec sales have almost tri-pled in the last three years. In 2010 alone 200,000 bikes were sold in this country. This means that close to 9% of all bikes sold by premium retailers are from this ca-tegory. In addition, this means that motor-assisted bicycles now account for 12% of all bicycle retail sales. Since the invention of the mountain bike no other technological development has revolutionized the bicycle market to this extent.

Presentations and Special ServiceProvidersAt BIKE EXPO visitors were able to not only experience new technology hands-on, but also increase their know-how. A multitude of theme-oriented exhibits, presentations and forums held by trade show partner ExtraEnergy e.V. and a variety of exhibi-

tors provided an extraordinary view of the subject of E-Mobility. In addition, the LEV Component Village, infrastructure service providers, and specialty e-mobility offers from the bike tourism sector complemen-ted the comprehensive presentation of the e-bike segment.

Growth Generator E-MotorThe upward trend of e-bikes seems to con-tinue in the future. The share of e-bikes in the overall German bike market is estima-ted to be between 10% and 15% in the mid-term future. This translates into 400,000 to 500,000 bicycles. The increasing demand drives technological advances and genera-tes an increasingly versatile model selec-tion. The synergy effect with other bike seg-ments was already obvious at BIKE EXPO: e-motors in hi-tech mountain bikes, e-bikes with road bike design, or e-motor-assisted city cruisers were no longer the exception. BIKE EXPO offers this trend-setting bike segment a comprehensive and dedicated platform.

URBAN BIKES – STILL THE LARGEST MARKET SEGMENT

Faster, healthier, trendier – Urban Biking! BIKE EXPO proved that the new passion for cycling is not just a question of style but also an importanteconomic factor.

THE RENAISSANCE OF THE URBAN BIKE

13% of Germans use their bicycle as their primary mode of transportation – this ranks Germany sixth among a European-Union-wide comparison. Large-scale investments by the federal government and the EU as well as a social trend towards a healthier lifestyle reveal the opportunities cycling of-fers. In 2010, 3.91 million bicycles were deli-vered to German retailers. City and trekking bikes were bestsellers with close to 60% of market share.

Cycling With StyleIn the cities the new mobility movement is accompanied by a new assessment of the bike itself – it becomes a lifestyle object. At BIKE EXPO, young Fixie and Single-Speed brands exhibited their purist-styled and tech-nically minimized bicycles. City bikes with retro design and cruisers with or without e-motor emphasize the trend towards an indi-vidualized ride. In addition, the trade show presented the aspect of integration of bikes into the everyday business routine: transport bikes, endorsed by EU projects, are slated to become the alternative for cars and trucks in the city traffi c of the future.

Look Good on Your BikeThe new importance of cycling was not just apparent in the hardware exhibited at BIKE EXPO. Apparel manufacturers have also been focusing on garments suitable for everyday use and functionality at the same time. Well-known brands as well as fresh newcomers exhibited their latest collec-tions at the CATWALK in hall A6.

Gereon Gromek Contour Europe,General Manager“We expected from BIKE EXPO 2011 that it would create a qualitative balan-ce platform to the EUROBIKE in Fried-richshafen in the metropolitan area of Munich – and Messe München suc-ceeded in doing so. We will intensify our appearance at next year’s ISPO BIKE, and hope that other well-known manufacturers will follow suit.”

INDOOR DIRT JUMP TRACK – 100 METERS OF ACTION

ROAD AND MOUNTAIN – PURE ACTION

By expanding its focus to include moun-tain and road bikes, BIKE EXPO covers theentire bicycle market and offers “athletic cy-cling” ample room for growth. During the four days of the trade show interested re-tailers and technologically inclined consu-mers were treated to an overview of all new developments on the market. In addition to 29” mountain bikes and new carbon road frames, the exhibits also included e-motor retrofi tting kits. These can be mounted on close to 70% of all mountain bikes and pro-vide uphill assistance when desired.

High Achievers in the Action HallThe pros in the new Action Hall at BIKE EXPO made do without electrical assis-tance. The events were moved for the fi rst time into hall B6 to be independent of the weather, and the mountain bike scene came together to wow visiting industry professionals and the public alike. An in-ternational group of top riders, including winner Szymon Godziek, proved their skills on four jumps installed on the 100-meter-long dirt jump track during the GO BIG OR GO HOME contest. Nearby at the PUMP

CLUB, there was also plenty of excitement: 150 riders tackled the 60-meter-long circu-lar track, a combination of Velodrome and Pump Track.

Big Wins For Little Kids Not quite as fast, but just as ambitious, was the competition among the young generati-on during the SCOTT Junior Trophy held in the outdoor area. The kids’ mountain bike race has become a tradition at BIKE EXPO, and was very popular this year as well.

People who ride mountain or road bikes are often ambitious athletes. High-er, faster, farther – this was also the motto for these segments at this year’s BIKE EXPO.

MOUNTAIN AND ROAD BIKES

Jan VanpraetEddy Merckx Cycles, International Sales Manager“We are very pleased with BIKE EXPO: there was a great atmosphere, and the trade show is the ideal chan-ce to speak to industry professionals as well as consumers. Overall it was the right decision to launch our new urban bike concept here. We also thought that the Central Park idea by Nutcase and Friends was fantastic. The exhibition center is great, the services are very good, and we are defi nitely planning to return to the next ISPO BIKE.”

COMPLETE "BE EASY" EXHIBITION PACKAGES SIMPLIFY THE FIRST TRADE FAIR PRESENCEBIKE EXPO BRANDNEW – INNOVATIONS GUARANTEED

STAGE FOR THE YOUNG & WILD ONES

The bike spin-off of the world’s largest new-comer competition in the sporting goods industry once again attracted plenty of young entrepreneurs: 80 newcomers from 14 countries entered their innovative con-cepts. A jury of experts analyzed each entry and selected 8 winners and 28 fi nalists who were invited to present themselves to retai-lers, the media and the public in the Brand-New Village at BIKE EXPO.

Ideas With Future Potential The BrandNew Award by Messe München has a long tradition: held for the last 12 ye-ars at ISPO, it has provided a jumping board into the market for many of its winners. Brands like Bionicon, Maloja and Nutcase are now established on the market, even though they started small in the Brand-New Village. This year’s winners, including the overall winner, myStromer with its fullyintegrated e-bike systems, will have the chance to launch themselves onto the mar-ket.

Special Booth Concept for NewcomersNext year, the announcement at the Mu-nich-based bike trade show will once again be: “and the BrandNew Award goes to...”. In addition to media attention and public ex-posure, the winners will enjoy a complimen-tary exhibit booth at the BrandNew Village. Registration deadline for the next ISPO BIKE is June 1st, 2012. Messe München of-fers all other brands the BE EASY concept, a complete exhibition booth package for a trade show appearance among like-minded participants.

Young brands are the oil on the chain of the bicycle market – without them nothing moves. Therefore, BIKE EXPO endorses the new generation in various ways. One highlight includes the BIKE EXPO BrandNew Awards, presented for the second time to the most innovative newcomer brands.

Andreas FelslBionicon, General Manager, Winner ISPO BrandNew Award 2000 “The BrandNew Award motivated us considerably to face the many obsta-cles on our way to a real business. During the important “naïve” inventing stage you have no idea which hurd-les are waiting for you. But it helps that you can think back to getting the BrandNew Award, telling you: “a jury liked it, so a retailer or consumer will as well at some point.”

Florian Haver SOLESTAR,Managing DirectorWinner BIKE EXPO BrandNew Award 2011“We were very happy with BIKE EXPO. The presentation made for us newco-mers at the BrandNew Village was very good. Since our product requires quite a lot of explanation the public days were particularly exciting for us. We received extremely good feedback to our pro-duct. The BrandNew Award really is a top chance for new brands.”

VACATION IN THE SADDLE

“Ride, ride, ride your bike!” is a popular ex-pression during vacation time in Germany. 14.6 million Germans have already gone on a cycling vacation and 5.6 million vacation with their bikes every year. German bike travelers are among the leaders among cy-cling-enthusiastic nations; thus bike travel becomes an important economic factor for the bicycle industry, hotel and gastronomy trade, and transportation industry. In 2010, close to half of the travelers spent up to 1,000 Euro per person for the pleasure of cycling.

From the Danube Bike Trail to Transalpine TrailsBike vacationers are mainly traveling to Northern Germany and to the Alpine regi-ons. The Elbe Bike Trail and the Danube Bike Trail in Austria are among the most popular destinations. Adrenaline junkies search for challenging rides for their mountain bikes on the transalpine trails. As early as 2005 the number of cyclists traversing the Alps every year was estimated at 160,000, and the numbers have been climbing steadily

since then. Road bikers seem to prefer the sunny south: 36% of people who vacation with their road bikes specifi ed Mallorca as their favorite destination.

Electrifi ed VacationsE-bikes are continuing to gain signifi cance in the bike tourism market. 4% of bike tou-rists are already using e-bikes, and an addi-tional 35% are considering it for the future. At BIKE EXPO a number of tourism associ-ations and private rental companies presen-ted their trend-setting offers. For example, e-bike rental company movelo operates a close-knit rental network with 4,500 e-bikes in 50 regions in Germany, Austria, Italy and Spain.

Where to travel? The vacation resort and tourism exhibits at BIKE EXPO en-joyed busy trade show days. Bike vacations are popular among Germans, and the new e-bike offers created additional momentum.

TEST SOMETHING NEW

It rained and rained and rained – the fi rst BIKE EXPO DEMO DAY was literally fl ooded out. However, neither industry or retail, nor the representatives from national television networks were scared away. The BIKE EXPO Test Area featured exhibits with innovations from the mountain bike, road bike, e-bike, pedelec, helmet and accessories segments. Among the exhibited products were mo-dels by Bionicon, Flyer, Haibike, Hercules, KTM, Nutcase and Panther, who were able to demonstrate the quality of their products despite the inclement weather – after all, cycling is an all-weather sport.

Testing Under Authentic Conditions The assembled industry professionals and journalists had the choice between three segment-specifi c demo trails. E-bikes and pedelecs were tested on a 3.5-kilometer-long circular trail around Samerberg. Road bike fans were treated to a 12.5-kilometer asphalted trail complete with an uphill sec-tion of 200 meters altitude differential and a 10% incline. Mountain bikers tested the new models on the trails of the Bike Park.

ISPO BIKE DEMO DAY 2012ISPO BIKE will launch another DEMO DAY in 2012 – hopefully under sunny skies. On August 15th, 2012 the Test Area will return to the Bike Park Samerberg. Free shuttle service from the East Entrance at the New Munich Trade Fair and the complimentary use of the Hochriesbahn will also be offe-red. As always, participation is free of char-ge for visiting industry professionals and members of the press.

The fi rst BIKE EXPO DEMO DAY was held a day before the trade show ope-ned its doors. Industry professionals and members of the media had an ex-clusive opportunity to test the innovations for the 2012 season at and around the Bike Park Samerberg. A successful event – even despite bad weather!

BIKE EXPO was renamed ISPO BIKE in order to integrate the event into the international sports business network ISPO. For more than 40 years ISPO has been renowned for global competence and is conside-red the trendsetter for the world of sports. ISPO’s innovative services and extensive contacts will also be-nefi t the participants of ISPO BIKE. Each individual exhibitor will be able to increase exposure and thus profi tability. In order to provide an even higher degree of professional support for the further develop-ment of all participants, ISPO BIKE now has its own dedicated project management team. Eva Schlangen-otto and her team can fall back on long-term experience in the trade show business and have access to a highly qualifi ed network of colle-agues all over the world.

NEW DATE

ISPO BIKE recognizes its role as

partner and service provider for the entire cycling industry; therefo-re the management reacted to the industry’s prevalent wish to move the event to a date later in the year. ISPO BIKE 2012 will be held from Au-gust 16th to 19th. On one hand, by this date the collections for the fol-lowing season as well as the related product documents will be available for all manufacturers; on the other hand, retailers will have a better overview of the current sales season and will be able to plan their orders more effi ciently. Another advantage of the later date is that consumers will view the new collections closer to the end of the season.

SEGMENT-SPECIFIC STRUCTURE

The topics Electro, Urban, Mountain and Road will continue to have their dedicated sections at ISPO BIKE, and additional selections will be ad-ded. For example, in 2012 the sport of Triathlon will be presented in its

own village in the road bike area. In the future, authentic side events will com-plement the individual segments, such as MTB contests or the 5i50 “Triathlon for everyone” by the organizers of the Ironman competition, to be held du-ring ISPO BIKE. This segment-specifi c concept of ISPO BIKE will provide an easy-to-navigate and homogeneous structure, offering a comprehensive re-presentation of the entire cycling mar-ket at the same time.

ROOM FOR FUTURE GROWTH

The excellent infrastructure of the New Munich Trade Fair – from 16 generous-ly designed exhibit halls to an easy-to-access traffi c network and plenty of hotels in the vicinity – offers the ideal environment for future growth for all exhibitors, segments and the entire market. The global range of ISPO’s communications services as well as the high degree of media presence at ISPO BIKE increases the exposure of all trade

show participants and also supports their growth.

BUSINESS AND PASSION

Of course, BIKE EXPO will remain true to its motto “Bike Business Meets Bike Passion”. The unique combination of a communication-rich working atmos-phere and an experience-oriented side event program will continue to provide exhibitors, visiting industry professio-nals and consumers with an all-encom-passing trade show experience.

HERRMANN GRUNDNERSALES MANAGER

FISCHER + LÖFFLER DEUTSCHLAND GMBH

“Löffl er very much welcomes the new schedule as it allows

retailers, who until now have not been able to come to the event due to their seasonal business,

to take advantage of this trade show.“

MICHAEL SCHMINKEPANTHERWERKE,

GENERAL MANAGER

“We welcome the date change for BIKE EXPO, or better, ISPO BIKE in 2012 to August 16th to

19th. Our customers will certain-ly fi nd us at ISPO BIKE in 2012.”

ADRIANUS ROESTBIRETCO MANAGERGERMANY/BELGIUM

“Biretco decided to exhibit at BIKE EXPO in Munich and

invite its retailers to the event. We expect that the event will

gain in signifi cance as the business location for the cycling

industry. Munich’s exhibition center and infrastructure regar-

ding hotels and traffi c access speak for BIKE EXPO. Until now,

the early date of BIKE EXPO spoke against the event; the

majority of the cycling industry disapproved of the July date.

Therefore we are pleased that Messe München decided to

select a new, later date beginning in 2012. Next year ISPO BIKE will be held from

August 16th to 19th, and we believe this is a

benefi cial date.”
