IKE FOR THE WIN!Last month IKE staff Wendy Anders and Kaley McGough attended the 2015 VAEAI Wurrerker Awards held at the Aborigines Advancement League. Deakin University and the Institute of Koorie Education were nominated for the training provider category and beat Federation University for top place. Wendy made an inspirational and gracious acceptance speech acknowledging the contribution and commitment of students and on behalf of the Institute received a certificate and a Wathaurong glass plate which will be on display at IKE.

WHAT’S NEWS AT IKE?

NEWS FROM KITJARRAThings are slowly wrapping up at Kitjarra. Nursing students are arriving next week for their final placements for the year and early childhood students are having their final intensive for 2015 this week.

We are hoping to start our refurbishment in the next few weeks which is very exciting!

We look forward to seeing you all in T1 2016

THE VICTORIAN FOOTBALL/NETBALL CARNIVAL IS BACKThe annual VIC state football/netball carnival is back and this year it was head in Bendigio! IKE staff and students from all over the state joined forces with their local communities and spent the weekend battling it out for the top spot and of course bragging rights for the next 12 months.

Congratulations to all those who attended and a special mention to the Bendigo community for their efforts in bringing back a Koorie community favourite.

IKE is working to strengthen our community connections and in doing so we hosted the Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative and their staff members for completing Red Dust Healing training session with Uncle Tom Powell. In all there was over 60 staff in attendance, one staff member said ‘I think the helpful staff and the sunny day assisted with the warm and fuzziness’.

If you’re a community group looking for a space that is culturally safe why not get in touch!

NORTHERN BAY COMES TO IKEAnother school group has been treated to the IKE/Kitjarra experience!

Last month we had a visit from Northern Bay P-12’s Goldsworthy road campus’ Koorie students, whilst here the students got a guided tour of the IKE facilities followed by a BBQ lunch at Kitjarra.

With approximately 128 Indigenous students enrolled across the Northern Bay P-12 school they have one of the largest cohorts of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in the state of Victoria.

We hope to see these students here at IKE in the next few years.
