Rhonda Egan,President, SFAC

President’s Letter

What’s Going OnOur Sacramento Fine Arts Center is one of the most unique art organizations you will find in America! Founded 31 years ago by 6 Art Clubs as a place where they could all share a facility for meetings, to show art, to make art, learn about art and share art, it has operated successfully with little outside help. It has stayed funded by membership dues, program and show fees, sales and donations. Thousands of people over the years of all ages and all

levels of art ability have come to join, learn about art and show art. Many thousands more have come to look at and appreciate the art here. Happy Birthday SFAC!

We welcome the new President of our board, Rhonda Egan. It is very appropriate that we now have a President who is a working artist, a teacher of art, and an award-winning master painter! We are glad she brings her professionalism and dedication to the arts to our board.

We love Art! We love volunteering! — David Peterson

Do you want to volunteer? We have something for you!Call me 916.716.5951or email me [email protected]

The first quarter of the year is already behind us. I am so excited at the number of successes we have had and look forward to more. I am so proud that the Fine Arts Center was awarded “Nonprofit of the Year” by the Carmichael Chamber of Commerce and happily accepted the award at their Annual Awards Banquet. We will find a special place to showcase the award.

As part of the grant received from the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, we have established a monthly family art day on the Second Saturday weekend

to encourage families to do art together. The March event brought in a number of new families, reaching a new demographic and hopefully encouraging budding new artists.

Committees have long been a vital part of how the SFAC operates, but over the years the number of active committees have diminished. The board has decided to activate the use of committees again in hopes of minimizing the burden on any one board member or volunteer. Thank you to those who signed up to be on one of these committees at the annual meeting. If anyone wishes to be more involved, we would love to have you join one of the committees or volunteer in some capacity.

Finally the big day of giving is coming up shortly. There are 600 organizations on the list this year. Please consider making a contribution to the Sacramento Fine Arts Center. You can donate online or call a phone bank. Thank you to all the many volunteers, board members and staff for all that you do.

In the Style of the Old MastersCalling all painters! In the Style of the Old Masters is coming up in August, 2017. Starting your painting early is important. It gives you time to look at several of your favorite artists and choose an approach that inspires you!

The painting below reflects the influence of Degas. Tim Sloan chose not to copy a painting, but to use Degas’s love of women in dancing positions as inspiration. He entered this in last year’s show. For the 2017 show, Tim has started a painting of an aged Indian, using the style of Rembrandt. He is hoping to achieve the broad strokes similar to Rembrandt’s “Study of a Head” and also use the heavy darks seen in many of his works.

Exhibit dates are August 15 – September 3.

Hand carry entry day is August 5th, 10 am-4 pm

Who were the masters of old? Why do we call them masters? The dictionary defines them as pre-eminent artists of the period before the modern, especially from western Europe of the 13th to 18th centuries. The old masters often worked under the supervision of guilds. Also, many masters worked for patrons, such as the Church, or important families, such as the d’Medici.

Some of the artistic techniques employed by the masters included camera obscura, chiaroscuro and sfumato, drawing, etching and engraving, silverpoint, gold leaf and gilding, fresco, bronze. Artistic styles of iconography, religion, realism, baroque, and gothic were part of the history of the old masters, whether in painting, drawing, sculpture, tapestry and embroidery, or architecture.

The Sacramento Fine Arts Center is hosting the 4th annual In the Style of The Old Masters show in August. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to try a style or technique that is new to you. By studying the works of a master you are able to see a bit of the history of civilization and understand better how a great work of art was created and for what purpose.

Art for FamiliesBy Juli Blanco

Spring is here, things are blossoming and growing everywhere you look. This is the case for SFAC’s Art for Families program too. With each new month’s weekend classes, the number of participants seems to grow and bloom. As one of the teachers involved, I enjoy watching the faces of grandparents, parents and children alike as they work side by side on their art. Whether it be collaging with colorful papers, making canvas holiday banners, painting on silk, painting blue monotone portraits making three dimensional creations with clay or making hand made cards, that look of concentration and satisfaction is visible no matter the age. Family togetherness, freedom from phones or any kind of screens is rare these days. Tapping into those imaginative places in the mind combined with working with our hands is really one of the simple joys of life.

Many thanks to our guest teachers who have given of their time, talent and supplies: Marie Dixon, Joan McMurray, and Michael Sirota. We all have had at least one “helper”, be it a family member or artist friend providing hands on assistance from start to finish.

A special thank you to one of our most loyal students, a young mom formerly from Belarus, Natalia Barysenka who has been

attending with her young son Demid. Natalia has many friends and faithfully brings a new entire family to each class! Her young son has been enjoying taking classes with Barbara Schneider. We are indebted to the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission for the grant which has made possible the Art for Families program.

More Art for Families classes are scheduled at the Center. Do come and join us! Make sure to reserve a spot for you and family members by contacting me, Juli Blanco at [email protected] or 916-956-8496.

Here are the upcoming class offerings for May and June:

Sat. May 13 Pastel Art, Juli Blanco

Sun. May 14 Mini Watercolor Paintings, Marie Dixon

Sat. June10 Matisse Inspired Mixed Media Collage, Sheila Jacobs

Sun. June 11 Watercolor Flowers, Helen Pleinert

Showing in Gallery 3/Sudio the month of May.

Through the medium of digital photography and computer generated imagery, my art seeks to illuminate and at times reinvent commonplace scenes. I seek to explore the fascinating world of the nearly invisible bringing to light the incredible, bizarre, complex, abstract, mysterious, and beautiful, details and patterns of the macro/micro world to which we are mostly oblivious. The current show attempts to blend my backgrounds in biology, photography, art and classical music, blurring the lines between science and music to create artistic images infused and resonating with elements of each. The genesis of this series of digital paintings is derived from the concepts of chaos and string theory in quantum physics and the mathematical possibilities presented of the existence of multiple new dimensions and parallel universes. They are intended to represent an artistic interpretation of some of

these concepts. From this inspiration, I strive to create purely abstract digital paintings utilizing the exciting new digital technologies at my disposal.

Richard grew up in Florida where he had ample opportunity to become intimately acquainted with exotic flora and fauna. Graduate studies in fish biology brought him to California where his interest in photography was ignited when he borrowed his major professor’s Nikkormat camera with its macro lens to photograph his aquatic study subjects. Unfortunately, his study was interrupted by a stint in the Air Force. He was stationed back in California and a steady salary enabled him to purchase the first Nikon camera of his own thus beginning a seemingly endless procession of cameras thereafter. He became involved with the Sierra Club and Photographic Society of America leading to numerous field trips and opportunities to photograph the incredible plants and animals found in California’s diverse ecosystems. Four years later a wonderful opportunity

to study art in Europe for a summer arose and allowed him to indulge his interest in art and painting, areas that one usually misses when pursuing careers in the sciences. Upon his return this quickly led to a degree in studio art with emphasis in photography, but now with a different perspective on creating the photographic image as well as having been introduced to the pinhole camera, large format camera and techniques such as photo-lithography, photo-etching and Polaroid transfers. I now find my photography reflects a synthesis of my interest in science, art, music and computer generated imagery.

NCA President’s Message

NCA Mission Statement: Our Mission is to promote the appreciation of and the

participation in the visual arts, and to spearhead art education in our community.

It is invigorating to be part of this dynamic and effervescent group!.....Effervescent?

Yes, very lively and enthusiastic!

Just when more help is needed, up pops a willing worker or workers. You must love the way this happens. The NCA Boards wants to welcome Mari Holmes and Sandra Torguson who are working with the Artist Standing Program. They are taking over for Diana Holt, who deserves a big Thank You for her long service to the board. I also would like to recognize Annik Gunter who is First VP-Programs and is staying at the helm despite physical set- backs. She has two good Co-VP Programs volunteers in Bobbie McBride and Leslie Wentworth. They will be working with Annik on the remainder of this year’s scheduled programs and developing the schedule for 2018. They welcome any suggestions for programs for next year. Lastly, I would like to express appreciation for Meriel Wisotsky who, despite her home being destroyed in a fire and subse-quent relocation etc. etc., has risen to the top and stayed with her NCA newsletter editor position. There is a special thank you for all the volunteers that mean so much to NCA.

Did you miss this?

Jan Miller had a show in March at the

Blue Wing Gallery in Woodland. The

solo show consisted of her paintings

in oil and also in pastels

(her specialty).

Also in March, Barbara Little showed

her lyrical watercolors at the Artistic

Edge Gallery in Sacramento.

Judy Knott was part of a four-artist

show called Inside Out at the Acai

Gallery in Fair Oaks, providing a taste

of summer in the middle of an unusu-

ally cold and wet spring.

These are just a few of the shows

NCA artists have participated in re-

cently. If you have had a recent

show or, better yet, have an up-

coming show tell us so we can let

the rest of the membership know.

Your achievements inspire us all.

Note: If you would like to see some of our president’s art-

work, she will be having a show at the Roseville Chamber of

Commerce from June 2—August as part of Blue Line Arts in

Public Places. Check it out!

To be an artist is to believe in life.

HOURS

FROM OUR PRESIDENTS . . . .The Sacramento Fine Arts Center is the home of WASH. Without it, we would not be able to put on the excellent watercolor exhibitions, demonstrations, and meetings. We can all support the Center through the BIG DAY OF GIVING on May 4. This is an online way to donate to your favorite charities including the Fine Arts Center.

By now you may have noticed that emails and eblasts are coming from a different source. Our Yahoo account was becoming problematic and impractical for getting the word out to our members and friends. We have set up a new email account for you to reach – [email protected]. All correspondence to the organization should be to that address. Also, we have switched to MailChimp to send out the eblasts. It replaces the archaic process we had to use through Yahoo.

In an effort to keep the meetings flowing, we are trying to limit the announcements at the meetings to WASH activities and business. If you would like to get the word out about your personal shows or teaching workshops, we have set up a bulletin board in Gallery 3 during the meetings for your use to post notices. We also will publicize this information on our Facebook page. Diane Tharp is in charge of posting to our Facebook page so contact her with the necessary information and graphics for this publicity opportunity.

If you have not seen our Facebook page and are on Facebook, simply go to the top bar and search for WASH-Watercolor Artists of Sacramento Horizons. Once on the page, click “LIKE” to become a friend. Current news about WASH will come periodically to your Facebook page.

The Member Show is a success. Thank you to all the members who brought their fine work for display in the show. Visit our website to review the winning paintings.

RONNIE RECTOR WORKSHOPRonnie Rector from Lake Tahoe has won numerous awards in regional art competitions. Her watercolors capture intricate architectural details, playful animals, and engaging street scenes. She has developed a striking method of combining watercolor with batik on rice paper. She will present her “ Watercolor with Batik on Rice Paper” workshop on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at the Sacramento Fine Arts Center. The workshop will go from 9:30 to 3:30. Cost for WASH members is $60.00 and for nonmembers is $70.00.For more information and to register please contact WASH Workshop Chair, Sue Davis: 916-359-7691 or [email protected]

MAY MEETING AND DEMOOur meeting is May 8 at 1:30 pm. The WASH members’ meeting will feature Colfax artist Juan Peña, who has been painting and teaching in our area for many years.

Juan Peña began plein air painting in 1959, while studying with Vernon Nye at Pacific Union College.  Later he studied under

portraitist Thomas Leighton and watercolorist Jade Fon Woo, both from the Bay Area. “In California, our weather and light is conducive to painting outdoors year-around,” says Juan. “I paint from life, or on-location for the most part, and sometimes from my imagination.”

Peña takes pride in his handmade wooden palette in which he mixes

nearly all his colors from just three primary colors. He usually works on full sheets.

Recently, Juan won second place for his body of work produced during a week-long paint out in Aspen, Colorado. Three of his watercolors have been selected for publication by NorthLight Books, two for Splash 15 (2014), and another for Splash 12 (2011). He also offers 12-lesson series of watercolor lessons free on YouTube. His work can be viewed at www.paintingsbyjuanpena.com

JUNE MEETING AND CRITIQUEOur meeting is June 12 at 7:00 pm. For our June WASH member’s

meeting, bring your own paintings for a critique session by Shingle Springs artist Stephany Nickel. She will offer her own take on how to improve your painting, with a view to presenting your best work in the fall WASH Open Show.

In her own painting, Stephany seeks to capture moments as “windows in time.” She sees herself as “a painter of time and the soul.” Her paintings usually flow from her main interests of portraits, spirituality, and women’s endeavors.

Her style is bold and fresh, with a vibrancy and depth of color so intense that you don’t realize she is painting in the medium of watercolor. Much of her current work reflects her passion to portray her heritage land of Ireland.

Nickel has juried many art competitions across California. Her work is in private collections throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. Palette Magazine has published her paintings and her article, “Break Throughs.” Stephany is one of the featured artists in the books Art Twenty-Ten and Art Twenty-Eleven available at local galleries and on Amazon.com.

Her paintings can be seen at Winterhill Olive Oil and Gifts as well as the Iron Willow Gallery, both in Placerville. Her works may be viewed online at www.stephanynickel.com.

Pink Peony by R. Favour

May - June

But First A Word...If you have not made plans for the next few months, consider these possibilities.Hunters of the Elusive Wild-flowers of California might want to take a Day trip to Pacheco State Park. It is ap-proximately 135 miles down Interstate 5 to Merced County exiting on 407 to CA 33, take 152 West toward Santa Nella/Gilroy. Follow San Luis Reser-voir around to the Park. There is a $10 parking fee but if you go to any other park that day you have already paid. Saturdays in April there is a Guided Wildflower Tour from 10 am – 12pm. The path is marked if you want to go it alone. There might be flowers left in May. Call (209) 826-1196 to check conditions. After capturing the Flow-ers do go on to Gilroy. If you travel on a Sunday, Satori Cellars have Mimosas for $7 a glass! Here is a Santa Clara Wine Trail Map if you want to refresh yourself from the Wildflowers Safari. http://gilroywelcomecenter.org/files/GWC_WineTrailMap.pdfA visit to Lassen Volcanic Park features over 700 species of flowering plants and retreating from the heat of the Sacra-mento Valley. At this time it is buried in 9 to well over 12 feet of snow. May & June [some-times July] have been known to have the occasional snow

storm. There are flowers below 6000 feet and Lupine varieties over 8,000 feet. This heralds an advantage of a longer Wild-flower season than previously thought. You can treat yourself to view all 4 of the World types of Volcanoes; the Cinder Cone, the Composite, the Shield and the Plug Dome. The Plug Dome at Lassen is Lassen Peak which has the potential to erupt in this century. The Peak was made from the eruption that destroyed Mount Tehama, which was 1,000 feet higher. Mount Tehama was a complex stratovolcano like Mount

Not going out of town? Maybe you might find scouting out the Architecture of our wide variety of Churches might be a photo opportunity. The oldest Mosque in the United States [west of the Mississippi] is at 411 “V” Street. Sacramento. The Gurdwara Sahib Sikh Temple of Sacramento [2301 Evergreen Ave, West Sac-ramento] is as impressive as the mosque on College Oak across from ARC [Ameri-can River College]. The Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy Myrrhbearing Women [who doesn’t like Myrrh and its healing properties??] at 833 Water Street, West Sacramento, has some Russian Icon paintings worth seeing. News on Lens & SoftwareComing to a Cell Phone, telescope or camera near you are the Planar Lenses or Meta-Lens. From Nano Tech Web [http://nanotechweb.org/cws/article/tech/65181] “ contains an ultrathin array of tiny waveguides (known as a metasur-face), can resolve nanoscale features smaller than the wavelength of light.” Say WHAaaaaaaa…??? YUP! It means all those curvilinear, multi-stacks of highly polished, carefully articulated lens that make a Telescope like NASA’s Hubble so heavy and powerful would be unimaginably smaller and VERY inexpensive. Anyone care to suggest to the President that we could jump start our Manufac-turing with the Meta-Lens in the USA???

Do check out the Basil Tree plants; basil so pungent you need only hold your hand above the tree to smell the released oils! http://www.highhandnurs-ery.com/taste-the-cafe/Tips and TricksHere is a little Tip: If you are shooting without a tripod remember that your shutter speed needs to be the fraction of 1/your focal length. This means if you are shooting Full Frame sensor [35 mm or 36mm x 24 mm] with a 50 mm lens your shutter speed needs to be 1/50 of a second. If you have a cropped sensor your lens of 50 mm is more likely 80 mm or 100 mm Ever had that sinking, stinking, sick-sick feeling when you have lost all the Images on your SD Card, USB or a Hard Drive??? Yeah. You know what I’m talking ‘bout. Those photos from your Kids Birthdays, Weddings and Travel Photos are all irreplaceable. You want someone to roll you up in a blanket crying & dying & wondering why you did not back up or be more careful. Well, there might be a solution! LSoft Technologies has UNFORMAT 5.0 that pur-ports to restore “formatted and deleted disk partitions as

data from individual files.” [from http://www.lsoft.net/unformat.aspx] The Demo is FREE

How about taking one of your older Digital SLR cameras or compact Point & Shoot and have it converted to a dedicated In-

Light PaintingAre you fascinated by Night Shooting and Light Painting? Found this Musician, Hannu Huhta-mo, from Helsinki, Finland who tripped into Light Painting because he was using long expo-sures to take his band’s promo pictures [http://www.hannuhuhtamo.com/]. His designs are intricate Light Paintings in abandoned spaces.

Janne Parviainen, from Helsinki and friend of Hannu, has a nice interview here https://lightsfromdreams.wordpress.com/2014/01/11/interview-janne-parviainen/#more-251 with tips on tools he uses.
