Kiger Involved In Independent FilmBY LORETTA SORENSENP&D Correspondent
Yankton native Beau Kiger hasreached a lifelong goal: starring in amovie.
Kiger is currently on location inValentine, Neb., where film com-pany The Pilot’s Lounge, LLC isshooting an independent film, “TheAviation Cocktail.”
“‘The Aviation Cocktail’ is a dra-matic thriller set in the late 1950’s,”Kiger says. “It is loosely based onColorado native and writer DavidHiggins family’s aviation history. The story centers around three warvets dealing with rural life afterWorld War II. I play Henry Fisher, the sheriff of a very small townwho, along with other members ofthe community, is struck withtragedy at the story’s beginning. The ensuing events revolve aroundhow the sheriff, his brother JackFisher and their friend Bob Hallo-ran and their families deal with theextraordinary circumstances.”
This is the first principal role forKiger, but he has worked on someshort films in Denver, a couple ofcommercials, and a bit of stand inwork and extra work on major fea-tures produced in Los Angeles.Kiger also recently had a bit part ina major feature film for a friend, also shot out in L.A.
The Pilot’s Lounge, LLC is lo-cated in Colorado and co-ownedand operated by Higgins along withBobby Deline. Higgins and Kigermet at the Colorado Film Schoolback in 2002. Deline met Higgins afew years back while developing an-other concept for a movie revolvingaround an outlaw/horse thief, DocMiddleton.
“Higgins and I are very closefriends.” Kiger said. “He told me hewrote the part of the sheriff withme in mind. He and I have beenhellbent on doing a film togetherand ideally would like to makemore films down the road and turnit into a career for both of us.”
Kiger has always been inter-ested in more than just watchingmovies. He says he got the actingbug in high school doing plays, butthen went into the Marine Corpsafter graduating. It wasn’t until 2001when he moved to Colorado that hegave real consideration to acting asa career.
“Acting interests me becauseyou get the chance to jump intosomeone else’s shoes and take on adifferent perspective,” Kiger says.“That can be very challenging onseveral different levels. My motiva-tion for working on this film is that Iget to collaborate with a greatfriend, Dave Higgins.”
Kiger says Higgins and Delinewould like to see the film in somefilm festivals and picked up for the-atrical distribution.
“There will be some screeningsin Denver, and here in Valentine aswell,” Kiger says. “Sometimes filmstake a while to get off the groundand collect steam. That’s why filmfestivals help because they can gar-ner good word of mouth and givethe film some good publicity.”
This type of film could well be astepping stone for Kiger, althoughhe says it will come down to howstrong the performance is and howmuch he wants to pursue other act-ing gigs.
“For every Harrison Ford or JimCarrey out there, there are thou-sands of starving actors workinghard for the chance to make a livingat this. I’m not getting any youngerand there are a lot of other thingsI’m interested in as well. We’ll see.”Kiger says.
Since most of the actors in-volved in “The Aviation Cocktail”have not yet established theirnames in the film community, get-ting a small film like this off theground is often a challenge. Kigersays it takes a lot of sacrifice fromeveryone involved.
“This is a lower budget film withno ‘name’ actors. The communityhere in Valentine has been verycharitable providing shooting loca-
