Safety The voltage of the frequency converter
is dangerous w henever the equipm ent
is connected to m ains. Incorrect instal-
lation of the m otor or the frequency converter m ay
cause dam age to the equipm ent, serious personal
injury or death.
C onsequently, the instructions in this m anual, as
w ell as national and local rules and safety
regulations, m ust be com plied w ith.
Safety regulations
1. The V LT frequency converter m ust be disconnec-
ted from m ains if rep air w ork is to be carried out.
C heck that the m ains supply has been discon-
nected and that the necessary tim e has passed
before rem oving m otor and m ains plugs.
2. The [STO P/R ESET] key on the control panel of theVLT frequency converter does not disconnect the
equipm ent from m ains and is thus not to be used
as a safety sw itch.
3. C orrect protective earthing of the equipm ent m ust
be established, the user m ust be p rotected
against supply voltage, and the m otor m ust be
protected against overload in accordance w ith
applicable national and local regulations.
4. The earth leakage currents are higher than 3.5 m A.
5. Protection against m otor overload is not includ ed
in the factory setting. If this function is desired, set
param eter 128 to d ata value ETR trip ordata value
ETR warning .
N ote: The function is initialised at 1.16 x rated m o-
tor current and rated m otor frequency (see page
92).
For the N orth A m erican m arket: The ETR functions
provide class 20 m otor overload protection in
accordance w ith N EC .
Warning:Touching the electrical parts m ay be fatal - even after theequipm ent has been disconnected from m ains. Also m ake sure that other voltage inputs have beendisconnected, such as external 24 V D C , load-sharing(linkage of D C interm ediate circuit), as w ell as the m otorconnection for kinetic back-up.
U sing VLT 5001-5006: w ait at least 4 m inutesU sing VLT 5008-5500: w ait at least 15 m inutes
6. D o not rem ove the p lugs for the m otor and m ains
supply w hile the V LT frequency converter is
connected to m ains. C heck that the m ains supply
has been disconnected and that the necessary
tim e has passed before rem oving m otor and
m ains plugs.
7. Please note that the VLT frequency converter has
m ore voltage inputs than L1, L2 and L3, w hen
loadsharing (linking of D C interm ediate circuit) and
external 24 V D C have been installed.
C heck that all voltage inputs have been discon-
nected and that the necessary tim e has passed
before repair w ork is com m enced.
Warning against unintended start
1. The m otor can be brought to a stop by m eans of
digital com m and s, bus com m ands, references ora local stop, w hile the frequency converter is
connected to m ains.
If personal safety considerations m ake it
necessary to ensure that no unintended start
occurs, these stop functions are not sufficient.
2. W hile param eters are being changed, the m otor
m ay start. C onsequently, the stop key [STO P/
R ESET] m ust alw ays be activated, follow ing w hich
data can be m odified.
3. A m otor that has been stopped m ay start if faults
occur in the electronics of the VLT freq uency con-
verter, or if a tem porary overload or a fault in the
supply m ains or the m otor connection ceases.

Why choose Danfoss?
D anfoss m anufactured the w orld's first m ass-pro-
duced frequency converter back in 1968. W e have
set the standard for quality drives ever since. That is
w hy our VLT frequency converters are today sold and
serviced in m ore than 100 countries covering six
continents.
W ith the new VLT 5000 Series, w e are introducing
VVC plus. This is our new Sensorless Vector D rive S y-
stem for torque and speed control of ind uction m otors.
If com pared w ith a standard voltage/freq uency ratio
control, VVC plusoffers im proved dynam ics and sta-
bility, both w hen the speed reference and the load
torque are changed. W e have im plem ented a fully
digitalised protection concept, w hich ensures reliableoperation, even under the w orst possible operating
conditions. N aturally, the VLT 5000 Series also offers
full protection against short-circuiting, earthing fault
and overload.
D anfoss drives w ith the VVC pluscontrol system
tolerate load shocks throughout their speed range
and react sw iftly to changes in reference.
H ow ever, it m ust also be easy to reach this perfor-
m ance. D anfoss is convinced that high-technology
drives can be m ade user-friendly. The V LT 5000 Se-
ries proves us right. In order to m ake p rogram m ing
sim ple and easy-to-grasp, w e have divided the para-
m eters into different group s. The Q uick m enu guides
users quickly through the program m ing of the few pa-
ram eters that m ust be set to get started. The control
panel is d etachable. It features a four-line alpha-
num eric display, enab ling four m easuring values to be
displayed at the sam e tim e. Via the detachable
control panel, the program m ed settings can be co-
pied from one VLT frequency converter to the next.
This m eans that there is no tim e to b e spent onprogram m ing w hen changing drives or integrating an
extra drive in the installation.
The entire program m ing process is easier than ever
before. The V LT 5000 Series m akes m ost adjust-
m ents autom atically.
If you have any q uestions concerning VLT frequency
converters, please call us. W e have drive specialists
all over the w orld ready to ad vise you on ap plications,
program m ing, training and service.

Electronic m otor therm al protection against overload .
Tem perature m onitoring of heat-sink ensures that the V LT freq uency converter cuts out if the tem perature
reaches 90C for IP 00 and IP 20. For IP 54, the cut-out tem perature is 80C . An overtem perature can only be
reset w hen the tem perature of the heat-sink has fallen below 60C.
The V LT freq uency converter is protected against short-circuiting on m otor term inals U , V, W .
The V LT frequency converter is protected against earth fault on m otor term inals U , V, W .
M onitoring of the interm ediate circuit voltage ensures that the VLT frequency converter cuts out if the

EMC-correct electrical installation
G eneral points to be observed to ensure EM C -correct
electrical installation:
- U se only braided screened/arm oured m otor
cables and braided screened/arm oured control
cables.
- C onnect the screen to earth at both end s.
- Avoid installation w ith tw isted screen ends
(pigtails), since this ruins the screening effect at
high frequencies. U se cable clam ps instead.
- It is im portant to ensure good electrical contact
from the installation plate through the installation
screw s to the m etal cabinet of the VLT frequency
converter.
- U se starw ashers and galvanically conductiveinstallation plates.
- D o not use unscreened/unarm oured m otor cables
in the installation cabinets.
The illustration below show s EM C -correct electrical
installation; the VLT frequency converter has been
fitted in an installation cabinet and connected to a

Electricalinstallation Use of EMC-correct cables
B raided screened/arm oured cables are
recom m ended to optim ise EM C im m unity of the
control cables and the EM C em ission from the m otor
cables.
The ab ility of a cable to reduce the in- and outgoing
radiation of electric noise dep ends on the transfer
im pedance (ZT). The screen of a cable is norm ally
designed to reduce the transfer of electric noise;
how ever, a screen w ith a low er transfer im pedance
(ZT) value is m ore effective than a screen w ith a higher
transfer im pedance (ZT).
Transfer im pedance (ZT) is rarely stated by cable
m anufacturers, but it is often possible to estim ate
transfer im pedance (ZT) by assessing the physical
design of the cable.
Transfer im pedance (ZT) can be assessed on the
basis of the follow ing factors:
- The cond uctibility of the screen m aterial.
- The contact resistance b etw een the individual
screen conductors.
- The screen coverage, i.e. the physical area of the
cable covered by the screen - often stated as a
percentage value.
- Screen type, i.e. braided or tw isted pattern.
Alum inium -clad w ith
copper w ire.
Tw isted copper w ire or
arm oured steel w ire cable.
Single-layer braided copperw ire w ith varying percentage
screen coverage.

Earthing of braided screened/armoured control
cables
G enerally speaking, control cables m ust be braided
screened/arm oured and the screen m ust be
connected by m eans of a cable clam p at both ends
to the m etal cabinet of the unit.
The draw ing below ind icates how correct earthing is
carried out and w hat to be done if in doub t.
Correct earthing
C ontrol cables and cables for serial com m unication
m ust be fitted w ith cable clam ps at both ends to
ensure the best possible electrical contact.
Wrong earthing
D o not use tw isted cable ends (pigtails), since these
increase the screen im pedance at high frequencies.
Protection with respect to earth potential
between PLC and VLTIf the earth potential betw een the V LT freq uency
converter and the PLC (etc.) is different, electric noise
m ay occur that w ill disturb the w hole system . This
problem can be solved by fitting an eq ualising cable,
to be placed next to the control cable. M inim um cable
cross-section: 16 m m 2.
For 50/60 Hz earth loops
If very long control cables are used, 50/60 H z earth
loops m ay occur. This prob lem can be solved by
connecting one end of the screen to earth via a
100nF cap acitor (keep ing leads short).
Cables for serial communication
Low -frequency noise currents betw een tw o VLT
frequency converters can be elim inated by connect-
ing one end of the screen to term inal 61. This term inal
is connected to earth via an internal R C link. It is
recom m ended to use tw isted-pair cables to reduce
the differential m ode interference betw een theconductors.

High voltage test
A high voltage test can b e carried out by short-
circuiting term inals U , V, W , L1, L2and L3and ener-
gizing by m ax. 2.15 kV D C for one second betw een
this short-circuit and the chassis.
NB!
The R FI sw itch m ust be closed (position O N )
w hen high voltage tests are carried out (seepages 33-36, R FI sw itch).
The m ains and m otor connection m ust be interrupted
in the case of high voltage tests of the total installa-
tion if the leakage currents are too high.
Safety earthing:
NB!
The VLT frequency converter has a high
leakage current and m ust be earthed
ap propriately for safety reasons. U se earth term inal
(see d raw ing pages 30-32), w hich enables
reinforced earthing.
Apply national safety regulations.
Motor thermal protection
The electronic therm al relay in U L-approved VLT
frequency converters has received the U L-approval
for single m otor protection w hen param eter 128 has
been set forETR Tripand param eter 105 has been
program m ed to the rated m otor current (see m otor
nam eplate).
Extra protection (RCD)
ELC B relays, m ultiple protective earthing or earthing
can be used as extra protection, provided that local
safety regulations are com plied w ith.
In the case of an earth fault, a D C content m ay deve-
lop in the faulty current.
If ELC B relays are used, local regulations m ust be
observed. R elays m ust be suitable for protection of 3-

RFI switch
M ains supply isolated from earth:
If the VLT frequency converter is supplied from an
isolated m ains source (IT m ains), the R FI sw itch can
be turned off (O FF). In O FF position, the internal R FI
capacities (filter capacitors) betw een the chassis and
the interm ediate circuit are cut off to avoid dam age to
the interm ediate circuit and to red uce the earth
capacity (according to IEC 1800-3).
See position of R FI sw itch on pages 33-36.
NB!
The R FI sw itch is not to be operated w ith
m ains connected to the unit. C heck that the
m ains supply has been disconnected before
operating the R FI sw itch.
NB!
O pen R FI sw itch is only allow ed at factory set
sw itching freq uencies.
NB!
The R FI sw itch disconnects the capacitors
galvanically; how ever, transients higher than
approx. 1,000 V w ill be bypassed by a spark gap.
M ains supply connected to earth:
The R FI sw itch m ust be in O N position in order for the
frequency converter to com ply w ith the E M C -
standard.
Installation of motor cables
NB!
If an unscreened cable is used, som e EM C
requirem ents are not com plied w ith, see the
D esign G uide chapter 11: Special cond itions.
If the E M C specifications regarding em ission are to be
com plied w ith, the m otor cab le m ust be screened,
unless otherw ise stated for the R FI filter in question. It
is im portant to keep the m otor cable as short as
possible so as to reduce the noise level and leakage
currents to a m inim um .
The m otor cable screen m ust be connected to the
m etal cabinet of the frequency converter and to the
m etal cabinet of the m otor. The screen connectionsare to be m ade w ith the biggest possible surface
(cable clam p). This is enabled by different installation
devices in the different VLT frequency converters.
M ounting w ith tw isted screen ends (pigtails) is to be
avoided, since these spoil the screening effect at
higher freq uencies.
If it is necessary to break the screen to install a m otor
isolator or m otor contactor, the screen m ust be
continued at the low est possible H F im pedance.
The frequency converter has been tested w ith a given
length of cable and a given cross-section of that
cable. If the cross-section is increased, the cable
capacitance - and thus the leakage current -
increases, and the cable length m ust be reduced
correspondingly.
Connection of motor
All types of 3-phased asynchronous standard m otors
can be used w ith the V LT 5000 Series.
N orm ally, sm all m otors are star-connected
(200/400 V,/).Large m otors are delta-connected (400/690 V,/).
