Roof system.
This submittal is for the replacement of the roof areas on the Exhibit Hall and the Grand Hall (Train Shed) at the
subject facility. This facility is located in a 90 MPH wind zone. This barrel roof of the Exhibit Hall is 82 ft. high
at the peak and 72 ft. in the valleys. This requires a minimum securement rating of Class I-60, I-105, and I-150
in the field, perimeters, and corners respectively. The Grand Hall/Train Shed has an average roof height of 40 ft.,
top of barrels at 91 ft. with the monitors reaching up to 108 ft. in height. The monitors require a minimum
fastening rate of I-90, I-150, and I-225 in the field, perimeters, and corners respectively. The lower roof areas of
the Grand Hall require uplift ratings as noted for the Exhibit Hall. The following paragraphs will describe the
proposed roof replacements and any recommendations resulting from FM Global’s review.
Exhibit Hall Barrel Roof (Steel Deck):
The existing roof is to be removed to the existing steel deck in the valleys and up the barrel a minimum of 4 feet
due to damaged insulation. Any damaged steel deck will be replaced or properly cleaned and primed prior to
installing the new roof materials. The remainder of the barrel sections of roof will have the membrane removed
only. The existing roof for the barrel and valley sections consists of a membrane, a 1 inch layer of
polyisocyanurate insulation, 2 inches of expanded polystyrene, and a 5/8 inch layer of gypsum over steel deck.

polyisocyanurate will be mechanically fastened through these layers to the deck using No. 14 HD Trufast screws
and stress plates at a rate of one fastener per 2 sq. ft. (14 fasteners per 4 x 8 boards). A top layer of 0.5 inch Atlas
ACFoam-HS coverboard polyisocyanurate will be adhered to the mechanically fastened layer using Olybond
foam adhesive with ¾ inch ribbons on 12 inch centers in the field, 6 inches and 4 inches in the perimeters and
corners respectively. The cover board will be covered using a 72 mil Sarnafil G410 PVC membrane will be
adhered to the mechanically fastened layer using Sarnacol 2121 (water-based) at a rate of 2.0 gallons per square
(max 2.5 gallons). The use of Sarnacol 2170 (solvent based) is also acceptable at the same applied rate which is
also the maximum. Laps will be hot welded.
The remaining sections of the barrel roof will only have the membrane removed (Roof Detail Type A). The
Roofnav No. 305079-0-0 roof system will be utilized for these roof areas. A 1/2 inch layer of tapered Atlas
ACFoam II insulation will be mechanically fastened through the existing layers to the steel deck using Trufast
No. 14 screws and stress plates at a rate of 1 fastener per 2 sq. ft. A 1.5 inch layer of Atlas ACFoam-HS
coverboard will be adhered to the insulation using an Olybond adhesive. The adhesive will be ¾ inch ribbons at
a rate of 12 inches in the field, 6 and 4 inches in the perimeters and corners respectively. The 72 mil Sarnafil
G410 PVC membrane will be adhered to the cover board as noted above in the valley roof section. These roofs
have a 90-SH rating if installed as prescribed in the Roofnav Assembly and subject to any comments below.
Exhibit Hall Perimeter Roofs (Steel Deck):
These lower roof areas will have the existing roof systems removed to the steel deck (Roof Detail Type C). Any
damaged deck will be repaired or cleaned and primed as needed. The FM Global Roofnav No. 21634-48824-0
roof system will be installed over the existing steel deck. A ½ inch layer of DensDeck (gypsum) will be applied
to the deck followed by a minimum 2.0 inch plus tapered Siplast Paratherm W polyisocyanurate insulation will
be mechanically fastened using a Parafast Roof Fastener and plate at a rate of one fastener per 4 sq. ft. in the
field, and 2 sq. ft. in the perimeter, 1 sq. ft. in the corners. A layer of 1/2 inch Dens Deck will be installed over
the insulation and adhered with a Parafast Insulation adhesive. The adhesive is to be installed on 12 inch centers
with continuous ribbon widths of ¾ inches. The spacing of the ribbons should be reduced in the perimeters and
corners to 6 and 4 inches respectively for wind uplift resistance. A Siplast Paradiene 20 EG TG SBS base ply
will be either torch adhered to the Dens Deck or secured using a cold applied PA-311 at a rate of 1.5 gallons per
square. A Paradiene 30 FR TG cap ply will be torched adhered to the base ply. This roof will meet Class 1/A-90-
SH if installed per the Roofnav Assembly.

property by bringing to your attention certain potential hazards or conditions. Life, safety, or health issues are not addressed. You must make the decision whether to take any action. The company undertakes no duty to you or any other party by providing this report or the activities on which it is based. The liability of the company is
limited to that contained in its insurance policies.
Exhibit Hall Perimeter Inverted Roof (Concrete Deck):
This lower roof area will have the existing roof system removed to the concrete deck (Roof Detail Type D). The
FM Global Roofnav No. 21822-48824-0 roof system will be installed over the existing concrete deck. The deck
should be properly primed using an asphaltic primer at a rate of 0.75 gallons per square. A Siplast Paradiene 20
EG TG SBS base ply will be torch adhered to the deck. A Siplast Teranap 1M cap ply will be torched adhered to
the base ply. This roof will meet Class NC/A-180-SH if installed per the Roofnav Assembly. This roof will be
completed as an inverted roof system. On top of the cap sheet, a drainage mat, 2 inch layer of 60 psi expanded
polystyrene insulation and a layer of tapered will be loose laid. A filter fabric and SBS walk pad will cap these
layers and will be covered with concrete pedestal pavers (2 x 2 ft.-2.25 inch thick).
Grand Hall/Train Shed (Wood Deck 2 in. T&G):
The existing roofing materials are to remain on the roof except the roof membrane (Roof Detail Type E). The
existing roof consists of 2 plys of felts, 3 inches of expanded polystyrene insulation, and a 5/8 inch layer of
gypsum which are currently mechanically fastened to the 2 inch T&G wood deck. Per the detail, the top layer of
gypsum is to be covered with a ½ inch of polyisocyanurate cover board insulation mechanically fastened and a
second layer of ½ inch coverboard adhered. A PVC membrane will follow and will be fully adhered.
Per the submittal, FM Global Roofnav No. 305079-0-0 is to be utilized for this roof. A layer of ½ inch polyiso
board will be mechanically attached through the existing components to the wood decking using a No. 14 fastener
and stress plate. The fastening rate is to be one fastener per 2 sq. ft. The 0.5 inch polyisocyanurate high density
cover board is to be adhered to the insulation using Olybond as noted in the combinations above. The membrane
is to be a 72 mil Sarnifil G410 PVC membrane adhered to the coverboard using the Sarnacol 2121 water-based
adhesive at a rate of 1 gallon per square. Pull out testing is to be conducted to verify that adequate resistance is
available from the wood decking. A minimum of five tests should be conducted and an average value obtained
from these tests.
Edge Terminations:
There are several types of roof edge terminations that will be present for this project. These include parapets,
expansion joints, and drip edges. Per the details submitted, the drip edges will be provided with a continuous
cleat along the exposed face. Parapet walls will secure the roof covering with a termination bar along the inside
face with counter flashing. Where metal caps are provided, gasketed fasteners are to be provided to secure the
cap 12 inches on center.
Review Comments:
1. As noted in previous FM Global emails regarding this project, the current roof systems are classified as
combustible Class 2 roof systems. The combustibility rating of the Grand Hall/Train Shed cannot be
changed from combustible due to its wooden roof deck. Several of the connector roof systems will be
classified as a Class 1 or NC due to the complete removal of the existing roof systems and installation of
an FM Approved roof system. The Exhibit Hall barrel roofs will retain a Class 2 roof rating based on this
current proposal. This is primarily due to the retention of existing unknown (manufacturer specs) roofing
components. If a Class 1 roof system is desired for this area, the local FM Global Field Engineer for this
project, Karen Whalen, should be contacted to further discuss. There may be options to qualify the existing
materials via testing or other means to assist in classification for a Class 1 assembly. It should also be
noted that there are two components of concern for roofing projects. The first is combustibility rating
which was discussed above. The second is wind rating. If the roofs are installed as proposed and per the
Roofnav requirements for each system, the roofs will be adequately secured for the anticipated wind uplift
pressures.

Recommendations to Reduce Hazards during Installation:
2. It is recommended that each of the barrel roof sections be completed with one type of adhesive throughout,
i.e., water-based or solvent-based to maintain consistency in application. Work should be scheduled to
ensure that this can be implemented.
3. The joints of the insulation board should be staggered during installation. Screws should be driven through
the top flange of the steel deck by ¾ inches and should not be within 6 inches of the edge of the board. It
is important to install the fasteners per the fastener placement drawings as improper fastener spacing can
reduce the overall uplift resistance of the assembly.
4. Any wet insulation should be removed and replaced. Proper securement of the replaced insulation should
be completed per the roof system specifications.
5. Screws should penetrate the wood deck by 1 inch and ¾ inches for the steel deck roof systems.
6. For the torch applied roof covers, Recommendations provided in FM Global Loss Prevention Data Sheet
1-33, Safeguarding Torch-Applied Roof Installation should be followed.
7. Products utilized in the roof cover installation shall be FM Global Approved as noted within the Roofnav
Assembly Specification. Any substitutions should be discussed with the FM Global representative.
8. All FM Global Approved materials are required to have the approval mark on the packaging or material
itself. Materials without proper labeling are not FM Global Approved and should not be accepted. It is
recommended that a label from each product be saved for file information.
9. Any hot work associated with this roof installation should be managed using the FM Global Hot Work
Permit System. FM Global Loss Prevention Data Sheet 1-33 should also be reviewed.
10. Only as much insulation board as can be covered should be installed each working day. Loose roof cover
edges should be sealed at the end of the day to minimize moisture damage.
11. Thorough supervision by the building owner's qualified representative should be provided during the
construction to ensure adherence to specifications and quality of workmanship.
12. Contracts should be left subject to final acceptance of the installation by FM Global.
13. Make a minimum of two 10 lb. ABC fire extinguishers available on the roof during roof construction.
This review is for property insurance purposes only in accordance with FM Global standards and guidelines.
Nothing should be inferred from this review regarding compliance with any rules, regulations or requirements
of government agencies, state or local codes or any other jurisdictional authority. We are retaining the copy of
your submitted plans for our files.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey R. Clark
