Vance Leavypublisher It’s a blast capturing folks giving back

It’s hard to believe the way 2012 is clicking along. Two months are already in our rearview mirror and nowthe talk is what folks are doing for spring break in thecoming weeks. Isn’t it scary how time flies the older youget?

Nonetheless, the last couple of weeks in Athens havebeen filled with folks supporting great causes whiledoing things they love. And here at BI Athens we’rehappy to be able to capture the many smiling faces thatnormally come with that.

From the parents and students at Barrow Elemen-tary pulling off their Boogie race (page 5) to UGA stu-dents dancing the night away at the Dance Marathon(page 7), the one constant is folks enjoying being withone another for the betterment of the Athens commu-nity.

And this issue doesn’t stop with just those twoevents.

On the cover, we decided to run Blane Marable’sphoto of the participants in the Miss Sorority Row 2012.How cool that a young lady from each of the 17 panhel-lenic sororities at UGA participated in the event held atHugh Hodgson Concert Hall. And all proceeds from itwent to the American Red Cross. And a local, McCallStiles, a Kappa Kappa Gamma freshman, was named

Miss Sorority Row 2012. Karli Barnett, a Kappa Delta, was the first runner up and Candice Branch, a Pi BetaPhi, was second runner up.

To me, the neat thing about pageants is the amazingtalent these young ladies possess. Sure they are all at-tractive, but to be able to perform in front of an audienceis really what makes the event special. Congrats to every-one for their participation.

The Athens Area Chamber recently held it’s annualawards dinner with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reid being theguest speaker. It’s always fun to see business leaders to-gether in one place celebrating another year of makingthe community better. And there certainly is plenty to behigh-fiving about with the recent Caterpillar announce-ment. Can’t beat jobs, jobs, jobs. And a chamber annualdinner isn’t complete without the ceremonial passing ofthe gavel. This year Elaine Cook handed the reigns overto Brian Brodrick. As you can see by the photo on thispage, one face shows a sign of relief, while the othershows the look of knowing plenty of hours are on thehorizon. Thanks so much to both of them for their will-ingness to serve Athens.

Also on the cover, we highlighted the UGA men’sbasketball team beating Florida a few weeks ago. Yes ithas been a tough year for Coach Fox and his players, but

there’s nothing like beating Florida in anything. Even though basketball is drawing to a close, there

are still tons of UGA sports happening that could useyour support. Don’t miss Travis Ragsdales’ 411 on page6 and make a commitment to go to at least two sportingevents during the month of March. And on page 4, JD ispumped about this year’s Diamond Dogs team that areoff to an excellent start. Enjoy his All-Perno team wherehe names the top players at positions that have playedfor UGA baseball during Perno’s eleven seasons.

Finally, I must give a shout out to our three dynamicinterns, Janell Niederriter, Ashley Hanna and Pierce Per-sons. Cheri is having a blast working with these youngladies. It’s a trip to see college students so sophisticated.I assure you I wasn’t so diligent during my college daysto execute features on PGA golfers and Athens businesses(pages 9 and 11). Now, I could tell you where the nextgreat music event was going to be. Although, that’s thebest thing about these girls, they’re without question hav-ing a blast during their college years, but are still able todo what they say they’re going to do, which is incredibleand appreciated.

Gotta run now, but enjoy this issue. And we’ll seeyou after Spring Break with our next issue … St. Simonsis definitely calling.

With Georgia flying out of the gates, the excitement aroundthe Bulldogs baseball program is electric. David Perno, who is in his11th at the helm, has guided the Dogs to unprecedented success andstability – something this sleeping giant sorely needed. At the topof the list of accomplishments are three trips to the College WorldSeries, a pair of Southeastern Conference crowns, and trips to six ofthe school’s 11 all time NCAA Tournaments, including three overthe last four years.

With 10 full years in, here is my All-Perno Bulldog Team. Hereare the caveats: No one on the current roster will be included, andthere are certainly several players who are well on their way to all-timer status. So the likes of Michael Palazzone, Alex Wood, KyleFarmer, Levi Hyams, etc. will have to wait. Also, these are playersthat have played for Georgia with Perno as the head coach, notstandouts like Jeff Keppinger and Andy Neufeld whom he recruitedand coached as an assistant. These lists are fun to do, because theybring back a lot of memories and they certainly stir a lot of discus-sion. The hard part is that a lot of great young men and kids justmiss out. There were a slew of candidates, after all, you don’t havethis kind of success without a lot of very talented players.

So without further ado – here is one man’s take on the All-Perno Bulldogs team of the 2000s.

CatcherTake your pick here. Clint Sammons is the best defensive

catcher Georgia has had, and was an integral part of the early suc-cess of the program. Bryce Massanari is one of the most dangeroushitters in Georgia annals, and Joey Lewis had a cannon and power.Jason Jacobs combined all the attributes. Plus, he and Sammons hittwo of the biggest homers in school history in the unforgettable re-gional victory over Clemson in 2004.

First BaseRich Poythress gets the call over Josh Morris. Both are amongst

the best players in school history. They were stellar defenders andfeared hitters. Morris is second on the school’s all-time home runlist and played in two College World Series. Poythress put togetherwhat has to be considered the best back-to-back seasons in Bulldogannals in 2008-2009, and combined with Gordon Beckham to

form the program’s and country’s (in 2008) most feared back-to-back punches ever.

Second BaseMarshall Szabo was an excellent hitter, three-year starter and

superb glove man. His one-handed, bare-handed catch followed byunassisted double play in a 2004 win at Mississippi State representsone of the great defensive efforts in Georgia lore. Matt Dunn wasvery good in 2006, and Miles Starr and David Toms stepped in ad-mirably after Michael Demperio was hurt in 2008. Hyams is a greatone and hot on Szabo’s heels.

ShortstopGordon Beckham is the greatest player in Georgia history, and

his 2008 campaign goes down as one of the best in SEC annals. Afive tool player with a flair for the dramatic, Beckham was the totalpackage who shined brightest on the biggest of stages. The homerun to set the school record in his final at bat at Foley Field, as theBulldogs blew out N.C. State en route to Omaha sent the place intoa state of bedlam seen only with Keppinger’s final blast againstCoastal Carolina in 2001 (baseball’s Belue-to-Scott). Beckhamplayed on two College World Series teams, led the nation in homersin 2008, became the first Bulldog in nearly 30 years to hit over .400,was the SEC Player-of-the-Year and scholar athlete-of-the-year.

Justin Holmes was outstanding in 2004. Farmer is Georgia’snext and current standout shortstop.

Third BaseRyan Peisel teamed with Beckham for three seasons to give

Georgia an exceptional left side. He was an excellent fielder andhitter, and a huge part of Georgia’s ’06 and ’08 Omaha runs. Peisel,a three year starter who hit leadoff in 2008, gets the nod over JoshSmith, All-SEC third baseman in 2004.

OutfieldJohnathan Wyatt, Bobby Felmy and Joey Side played together

for three seasons and were integral in the Bulldogs College WorldSeries powerhouses of 2004 and 2006. Wyatt hit one of the biggesthomers in school history to deliver the 5-3 SuperRegional clinch-

ing victory at Tech in 2004. Felmy hit an enormous homer theweek before against Clemson. Side was the SEC’s best player in ’06and had the best all-around season for a Georgia player betweenKeppinger in ’01 and Beckham/Poythress in ’08. There were a lotof candidates here including Kris Edge, Adam Swann, Chaz Lyle,Matt Olson, Matt Cerrione, Zach Cone and Jonathan Taylor. Andthis Georgia team has some good ones, but that stellar trio of Wyatt,Felmy and Side gets the call.

PitchingJosh Fields and Will Startup anchor the bullpen. Fields is the

greatest pitcher in Georgia history. A two-tie All-American and theSEC’s all-time saves leader, he closed out Regional and SuperRe-gional Championships in 2006 and 2008. His fastball was beyondbelief, touching 99 mph and he had a nasty hook. Startup was thestar closer for the 2004 Bulldogs, closing out the Regional and Su-perRegional victories over Clemson and Tech. He doubled as astarter in 2005.

There have been a bunch of standout relievers, including DeanWeaver, Alex McCree, Will Harvill, Mitchell Boggs and Bo Lanier. There are several on this team who have a shot to make an All-Starlist as well.

For the starters, there have been so many. In 2004, there wasMichael Hyle, Sean Ruthven and Paul Lubrano. In ’06, there wasBrooks Brown and Mickey Westphal and a young Trevor Holder. Then in ’08, a four man rotation of Holder, Stephen Dodson, NathanMoreau and Nick Montgomery emerged. Monty famously shutout Tech in an ’08 Regional Elimination Game. Holder was key inboth ’06 and ’08. Hyle has one of the best records in Georgia his-tory.

When their careers at Georgia are done, current Dogs Palaz-zone and Wood will be at the top of this list as well.

I know I have left out a ton of standouts, and I have to men-tion the great “clubhouse” guys who were good players and great“glue” guys – Matt Cavender and Brent Hallman, Steve Esmonde,Matt Woods, Jake Crane and Starr.

It has been more fun than should be legal calling the gamesover this incredible period, and this team has the potential to makesome more very special memories.

Men’s Basketball

The regular season is over for Mark Fox and the Hoop Dawgs and they couldn’t be hap-pier that it’s come to an end. Ending the season on a 2-6 skid is not what they had inmind when SEC play started back in January. However, they were able to round out theseason with a convincing win over South Carolina on Senior Night. It was a great way tosend out Gerald Robinson, Dustin Ware, Connor Nolte and Matt Bucklin. Now, it’s tour-nament time which is essentially a new season. You’ll remember a few years back whenGeorgia was able to sneak their way in to the NCAA tournament by shocking the worldand winning the SEC tournament. This year’s tournament will be held in New Orleansstarting on March 8. The Dawgs come in as the 11-seed and will face off against Missis-sppi State at 10 p.m. the same night the tournament starts. This turns out to be a breakfor Georgia as they played Mississippi State very close in their only regular seasonmatch-up; it was a 70-68 overtime loss in Starkville. Who knows? Maybe Georgia canmake a run in the tournament like they did a few years ago. Or at least grab a few winsand get a birth in the NIT.

Baseball

The number eight Diamond Dawgs keep on rolling with win after win after win. Aftertaking two of three games from Western Illinois, they are now 10-2 on the year. Theonly two losses coming at the hands of Western Carolina in a mid-week matchup andmost recently against Western Illinois. The weekend of March 9, the UCLA Bruins willbe in Athens for a three game set. This will be the first real test for this team. Up to thispoint, pitching has been the team’s strongest aspect. Through twelve games, the highestrun total allowed has been 7 by Western Illinois. This is exciting considering the strug-gles they had on the mound last year. It’s actually the bats that are a bit of a concern forCoach Perno at this point. Averaging only about 6 runs a game against inferior teams isnot where they were hoping to be at this early point of the season. Guys like LeviHyams and Brett DeLoach need to get hot in the hopes of sparking a fire in the rest ofthe lineup before SEC play starts.

Men’s Tennis

Following a tough loss to the number one team in the country, USC, the Dawgs havebounced back and begun SEC play with a flourish. They opened up with a convincing6-1 win over #22 South Carolina in Columbia. They then traveled to Gainesville andwon their toughest match of the season. Tied 3-3 with Wil Spencer down 2-5 in thethird set, they were down and out. But Spencer roared back winning 5 games in a rowto win 7-5 and secure a 4-3 win over the Gators. They will be back in Athens on Fridaythe 9th, taking on Mississippi State at the Dan Magill Tennis Center. That same week-end, on Sunday, Ole Miss will travel to Athens for a 1 p.m. contest. Wil Spencer contin-ues to pace the team as the number 3 overall player in the country. At the same time, freshman Nathan Pasha is now 10-1 in the dual-match portion of the season and has be-come a regular feature on the SEC players of the week list. Georgia will have an out ofconference match against Ohio State at home on March 21 at 2:30 p.m.

Softball

Much like the rest of Georgia’s spring sports, the softball team is off to a rip-roaring startto the 2012 season. Standing at 18-2, they have moved themselves up to a top-ten rank-ing in the country. Pitcher Morgan Montemayor is already 8-1 on the year and has yet togive up more than three runs in a game this year. Senior Kristyn Sandberg leads the of-fense batting at a .450 clip and knocking seven home runs out of the park. Georgia be-gins SEC play with a three game series in Starkville against Mississippi State beginningon March 9. They will be back in Athens on March 16 to take on Auburn.

Equestrian

While many of the spring sports are ranked in the top ten nationally, only one is num-ber one. And that’s the equestrian team. Well on their way to another national title, theyhave breezed through the early portion of their schedule and only have a few moreevents before they head to Waco, Texas for the National Championships. First they’ll bein Texas taking on Southern Methodist and TCU on the 9th before traveling to Okla-homa State the day after. The team then has a couple of weeks off before heading backhome where they will host the Southern Equestrian Championships on March 30-31.

Spotlight on Dave Cappi DePalma’s Italian Cafe owner, Dave Cappi, talks on family, his love for great food and franchising internationally.

Where did your love of food and cooking come from?I Italian family in New York has its ups and downs. One of those, depending which way you look at it, was the food. Our lives as a group were centered around food. Not just holidays either. I eagerly awaited the weekends when all the cousins would come together at one of our grandparents for a visit. Whether in the Bronx with my Dad’s family or in Brooklyn with my Mom’s, there would be a great feast. Foods like fried artichokes, chicken parmigian, octopus salad, homemade sicilian pizza, bracciole, fried peppers, struffuli, pignoli, cannoli… you name it we had it, I ate it! And I watched all grand-mothers and aunts cook for hours. There was one very special event… a yearly “Feast” in a rundown park in NJ across the river… all the descendants from my grandfather’s town in Italy would gather for three days and do noth-ing but play cards, drink and eat. Family members came from all over the country. It was an incredibly festive, warm time in my life. As children we ran around the park all day long with our cousins and other children we only saw once a year. The older men and women would carry a ten foot tall statue of this Saint with $100 bills pinned to her, around the park every hour with a small brass band behind them playing old Sicilian songs and great smells of grilling sausages, roasting onions and heaping pots of boiling tomato sauce

In truth it was a decision out of our hands. While we had told those involved in and with our organization that our plan was no further initially than 2-4 hours from Athens and I meant by car. I have customers who started coming in the the 1980s with these little kids and now the kids are bringing their little kids in. So many days you think you’re just serving food but when you stop and look at it with retrospect you realize you’ve become family with a lot of the people involved, employees and customers. You’re a part of their lives, a part of their fun and a part of their sustenance in a way. You’re there

their engagement, their birth’s and unfortunately sometimes in their deaths. Such is life.

something and being a part of that magical process that still only can be found here on earth. I have a large organic garden that I’ve been working in for years. It completes the circle I guess… literally. In the spring I start to pick up the scrap vegetables from our chefs (lettuce cores, pepper crowns etc) and I compost them and eventually put that into the garden. By summer my customers are eating cucumbers, basil, tomatoes, squash and onions from that garden.

I know the recipe and I know how we make them and while they seem so damn simple they are totally addictive and literally make me happy when I eat them, the breadsticks! I don’t care what’s in them they are always freakin’ great, I must say. My last meal will never be a steak or lobster, it’s going to be a half order of meatball and onion breadsticks. If you’re wondering why a half order, they cook better (little secret there).

Spotlight on Angie and Bubba WatsonRegardless of where you end up, it’s nice to know that you always have Athens to come back to. Angie and Bubba Watson are living proof of this. Bubba, a current star on the PGA Tour, and Angie, a former WNBA player, both re-ceived academic scholarships to the University of Georgia, the place they credit with taking a chance on them. Even though they’ve both gone on to have successful careers, Georgia remains close to the couple’s hearts and they make sure to visit the eclectic college town as often as they can.

About coming back to Athens, Bubba says, “For us, it’s a time to get back and just see some of the teachers, some of the people that have

now.”

They were recently in town so Bubba could guest coach the women’s basketball game against LSU with Angie’s former coach, Andy Landers, after winning a bet. Bubba bet Landers he could hit a golf ball out of Sanford Stadium at a football rally earlier this year. If he did, he would get to guest coach a basketball game,

and if he didn’t, Landers would caddy a practice round for Bubba at the Master’s. For anyone who has ever seen Bubba swing a golf club, it wasn’t a surprise that he knocked it out of the stadium with ease.

With Bubba and Angie, there’s always excite-ment though. The couple, who met in college while Angie was healing from a basketball related injury, have been thrust into the limelight

because of their tremendous talent, but handle it better than most. If you ask anyone who knows them, they have nothing but praise for the two. Bubba’s college golf coach, Chris Haack, says

on Bubba. And Rhonda Kilpatrick, who worked closely with Bubba as an academic counselor, says that “they’re a great balance for each other and make a great team.”

The couple are more than just alumni though, they’re global ambassadors of both the school and athletic program. Kilpatrick adds that “they’re some of the genuinely nicest people you’ll ever meet and we’re really proud of them.”

In addition to the time they already set aside for their alma mater, the couple is currently working on a scholarship, so they can give other athletes a chance at the opportunities they received at UGA. It’s amazing to see a couple like Bubba and Angie have so much love and respect for their college and it’s safe to say that Athens is just as happy to welcome them back as they are to be here.
