March/April 2016
You may have seen the article in the Detroit News Homestyle in January 2016. It was about three friends that went to Paducah, Kentucky 16 years ago and came up with an idea to do a round robin quilt. Our speaker Sue Goeddeke was one of the three friends. Sue will be lecturing at our March meeting.

From Heart to Hand: African American Quilts from
the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts
January 24, 2016 to April 10.16
Hodge & Temporary Exhibition Galleries
1120 East Kearsley Flint MI 48503
Throughout history, quilts have held an important and cherished place
in our culture, particularly in the American South. From Heart to Hand:
African American Quilts from the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts surveys
20th-century African American quilt artists from the South, restoring
their identities and drawing in examples that range from abstract com-
positions to figurative works of cultural icons like Jackie Robinson.
Sometimes quilts were intended to spread across a bed and provide
warmth while others were statements that were to be hung on a wall,
like a painting. Regardless of their purpose, each quilt showcases the
skill of each artist and an attention to line, color, and pattern. Experi-
ence the rich history of African American quilting by exploring 30 quilts
that use the patchwork and applique technique to execute both tradi-
tional and original patterns. Accompanying this exhibition is a colorful
catalogue, Just How I Picture it in My Mind: Contemporary African-American
Quilts from the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.
Admission is $7.00 free on Saturdays

Welcome Spring! So much to love about spring, a break from all of the long , cold, grey and white winter days. I love all of the colors in spring… soft pink, tender lime green, daffodil yellow, tulip red, and blue skies. And this year we have our spring Quilt show to look forward to! I wanted to update you on the President’s Quilt Challenge I started in September 2015. So far I have collected over 100 quilts!! The response has been overwhelming and I’m tickled pink to see all the pretty quilts that have been made and quilted using your home machines! I’m thrilled that some of you have gone out of your comfort zone and have tried different decorative stitches to quilt the tops. These quilts are truly beautiful and I am amazed by the talent in our guild! We have used up many of the unquilted tops that the charity committee had hanging around their storage areas. I’m sure they are happy! Turning Point, Henry Ford and McLaren Hospitals are a few of the places our charity quilts may be given to this spring. A big THANK YOU to our members who have donated quilts! For those who are new to the guild and haven’t heard of the President’s challenge, let me explain. The Challenge: Finish ONE quilt for Charity. Our charity committee had so many tops that were sewn, but not quilted and we had a lot of members that were nervous to try to quilt a top on their own personal sewing machines. So, I combined the two and began a challenge in September asking for each member to finish one quilt for the charity committee. You may use your own fabrics or use charity committee fabrics to complete the challenge. Either way, the challenge is to completely finish one quilt. That means pieced, quilted and bound. You can stitch in the ditch, use a straight or decorative stitch on your sewing machine. No polyester batting, cotton only please. Binding must be sewn on by hand – when sewing front to back. Charity quilts can be lap size, baby quilts, or even twin size. Turn the quilt into me before June 2016, get a ticket , and you’ll be entered into a drawing for one or more cash prize(s) of $50.00. I hope you take this time and challenge yourself to finish one quilt for charity! Sue Sharkey, President

We received positive comments from the members about last months Whistle Stop program. Some members have asked for details from the techniques that were presented. Sue Sharkey demonstrated her technique for English paper piercing. She made her templates from the subscription postcards that fall out of your favorite magazine. You could also order pre-cut templates from www.paperpieces.com. The website has tutorials for every step in this process. Karen Stockett brought her origami hexagon quilt. You can find the tutorial for this on You/tube. Search for origami hexagon from fabric. Joy Sandelich gave a demonstration on free motion quilting on your own machine. Contact Joy ([email protected]) for the titles of the books she finds most useful. Patti Mitrowski gave us a way to use a popular binding tool to make an easy and quick table runner. You can watch a video tutorial from Missouri Star Quilts; search for Binding Tool Star Quilt. Thanks go out to all four ladies who presented. Maybe you have a technique or tool you would like to share. Let me know

A quilter comes into a bar, orders a beer and tells the bar-
tender to keep em coming. A friend passes by on her way
to the quilt store and is surprised to see the quilter at the
bar. When the friend walks in and asks the quilter what
she is doing there she says “ Its research for my next quilt
I’ve never made a Drunkard Path before.”

Marie Chesney and myself have talked for a few years about taking a "quilting cruise", Marie
finally said, let's do it! We picked Stitchinheaven from the back of a quilt magazine. We picked an
Eastern Caribbean cruise in Jan 2016. We were on Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas, which is
huge! Here are the quilts we made (or at least started). Instructors were very knowledgeable, en-
tertaining and fun. Classes were when we were out to sea. They supplied Bernina machines. The
sewing rooms were open to us 24/7 if we wanted to sew. The cruise was GREAT! I'm looking for-
ward to planning another one! (Pictures of the quilts are on the back page)
Stephanie Brandenburg's Subway Tiles
Enjoy this flower garden year round! Large flower blossoms and tiles frame the Edible Garden panel on this lovely floral quilt which includes fabrics designed by Stephanie Branden-burg for Frond Designs.
Pam Goecke Dinndorf's Matrimony Matrimony is a dynamic contemporary take on an old favorite, Double Wedding Ring! It is created with templates and applique which eliminates curved piecing and the need for corner medallions.
Amy Walsh's Regatta
Do you love clean lines, strong graphic patterns and straight-forward piecing? This quilt
is for you! Regatta blocks are strip pieced. We’ll cover piecing and cutting tips in class as well
as changing the look of your quilt with fabric/block placement. By Pam Tibbits.
While we were on a Fall Color Cruise out of Boston at the end of September, I noticed a quilt-ing group in the conference center and stopped in to say "Hi!". Needless to say, all the ladies were very friendly. They were trying out a new machine, A Janome Memory Craft 8900 QCP Special Edi-tion, and the presenter invited me to sit down and try it out with them. I felt a little awkward since I was not really part of this group, but I did join them for a little while. During the rest of the cruise, I frequently ran into some of the quilters on the ship (they did wear name tags, so they were easy to identify), and they would invite me back to keep trying out the machine. I was never there for their lessons or quilt instruction, just during open sew. After a few visits, my husband (who knew I was looking for a new machine) started asking the machine salesman about the pricing; and before I knew it, my husband had bought me a new machine! And then the bonus, with the "large" machine, you got a smaller version for travel, a Janome New Home 2030 DC. So, I went on a lovely fall cruise and came home with two sewing machines! I'm still learning the nuances of the machines, but I am enjoying them. By Marilyn Woods.

The committees are now ready for volunteers to sign up to work at the show. This would be a good time for our NEW
MEMBERS to volunteer an hour or two to work along with our seasoned members. Please sign up at the March/April meetings
to make our 2016 show a great success. In addition, members are asked to buy or sell a book of raffle tickets and return the
stubs with payment by the March/April meeting to Judy Keener or Diane Tocco. The Guild uses the profits from our quilt show
to provide you with the wonderful speakers you hear at our meetings as well as to purchase supplies for our charity quilts.
We are planning on a section for guild mystery, and challenge projects, so if you participated in a mystery quilt, block of
the month, row by row please consider entering your quilt (s). ENTRY FORMS ARE DUE APRIL 4, 2016 We cannot do the quilt
show without your support.
If you have any questions you can contact Marj Bryen or Fran Piertron.

QUILT SHOW CATEGORIES
This year anyone entering a quilt in the show will have to choose the category they want the quilt judged in. They can
only pick one category on the entry form: Handwork, Traditional, Modern Art, Home Décor, Appliqué, Use of Color, Wearable,
Hand quilting. With your entry form you will receive category descriptions to assist you. All quilts entered will be eligible for Best
of Show, 1st Runner Up, and 2nd Runner Up.
When quilt show entry is received, a card will be made up with your name, who quilted it, the name of the quilt, and
quilt’s story (if you wrote one). Also, you will find a round colored sticker on this card indicating the category for voting and
a number assigned to your entry. When people vote they will write the number in the box next to the appropriate category.
At the end of their visit, they will turn in their ballot to the ballot/ribbon booth. Volunteers will give them a 2-part raffle
ticket to fill out. They will write their name and phone number on the one part, put it in the box and keep the other portion.
We will draw a ticket at the end of the show for a $25 gift card to Applebee’s. New this year to the ballot is a short sur-
vey asking how they heard about our quilt show.
Ballots are pre-stuffed into the program, but you need to ask them to take it out, explain the voting process and to come
back with their completed ballot for a change to win the $25 gift card. Once they complete their ballot, you place it in the
ballot box and have them fill out the raffle ticket.

5 days, August 22-26, 2016 – 9:00 am-noon, 2:00-5:00 pm (classroom with be open from 7:30 am to 10:00 pm each day) Level: Advanced (sewing machine used) Class Fee: $675 ($500 is non-refundable) Location: Century Club Ballroom (downtown Muskegon, http://www.centuryclubballroom.com/)Description: Attached and available on Nancy's website, http://www.nancycrow.com/artworkshops.html To register and secure your spot we are asking for the full payment of $675 (credit card or check payment). To register please call at 231.720.2587 This brand new 5-day class has been specifically developed for students desirous of being far more experimental using machine-piecing techniques. Students will be expected to work spontaneously and intuitively with nontraditional quilt-making techniques as they explore design exercises that pro-mote improvisational approaches to composition without benefit of "pre-planning" and "intellectualizing." Design Exercises will be used as a basis for flexing muscle memory in developing a more fluid ap-proach to cutting improvisationally all sorts of SHAPES and LINES. Emphasis will be placed on forming NEW CONFIGURATIONS that could be used as the MOTIF or SUBJECT MATTER of a figure/ground composition. Students will learn construction and engineering techniques. Color, and the values of color, from light to dark, will be emphasized in all exercises so a great selection of fab-rics must be brought to this workshop. Students will be working in SOLID COLORS the entire 5-days so there is no need to bring any printed or marbled fabrics, only solids whether commercial or hand-dyed. If students want to learn to work more effectively, more efficiently from "instincts" and "intuition” they must come with an open mind and no agendas, ready for growth and for risk-taking! ched and available on Nancy's website, http://www.nancycrow.com/artworkshops.html To register and secure your spot we are asking for the full payment of $675 (credit card or check payment). To register please call at 231.720.2587.
