Fast speeds and motor vehicles have long since excited and exhilarated the young through the generations, the fearless-ness that they embody enables the young to seek adventure in areas adults seldom venture, and this was evident on this particular day.

The project has been responding to and assist-ing the needs of local young people within the community in different ways. Providing a range of experiences and learning opportunities through activities, befriending, group work, residentials, outdoor pursuits and sports. These were designed to advance the social education of young people by bringing them into contact with reality which helps to develop a sense of responsibility, self-reliance and co-operation. Bordesley Green Detached Project strives to develop innovative projects which provide young people with the opportunities that build confidence whilst also making activities enjoyable. In the process individuals learn and develop personal and social skills to help reach their full poten-tial.

With phenomenal achievements gained by young people in this project and the greater learning each individual has gained helps immensely towards their self-esteem, acquiring new skills and developing their talents. The develop-ments through these initiatives insure that young people can play full part in improving society and spreading good practice amongst their peer groups.

The project works with various partners locally, city-wide and nationally, such links are constantly being developed and are crucial for service delivery. Partnership work brings organi-zations together to create a safe and informal learning environ-ment for young people. This also is an example of good working practice.

It is important to acknowledge and recognize that this can only be achieved through the dedication and commitment from those involved and i congratulate the young people, staff and our partners for such achievements.

CONSEQUENCE

Engaging young people using group work as a

method of delivering these sessions were to raise

awareness and educate in relation to drugs and

substance abuse. Offering advice, information

and signposting services both locally and nation-

ally. This also focused on the impact on families,

friend’s, careers, finance and the law, covering

issues surrounding personal and safety of others.

WORKSHOPS

A Series of workshops on Street gangs, Dealers and Doing time were

organised for young people. This was to understand the consequences

of gang affiliation. “Buying drugs is illegal. Possession and supply are

both serious offences that can bring strong penalties and how this can

devastate parents and families lives.

Also workshops to help young people understand how prisons affect

self and society as a whole. Throughout these workshops young people

were engaged in various group activities and role play to increase their

awareness and understanding of issues around gang cultures. The

workshops were very well attended, and while not all young people were

directly involved in gangs, there were certainly a large number who were

at risk of being involved in gang activity. It is planned to continue to

address these issues with young people, so far the project has managed

to organise and deliver several of these workshops in the area with the

support of our partners.

The project in partnership with various organisations has been able to deliver

First Aid courses where young people have gained First Aid certificates. First

Aid training which is useful in every day life whether at home; out on the

streets or taking part in activities is a life saver. This year the project has

trained 72 young people in the local area.

The workshop allowed young people to acquire a certificate and become

qualified first-Aider. First Aid is without question one of the most valuable

skills of life. A First Aider who can deliver their skills competently and confi-

dently is the vital link that can really mean the difference between life and

death.

‘Everyone – regardless of age or ability can benefit from having some first aid

Knowledge. If just one person in every UK household did a two hour first aid

course, at least three lives a day could be saved’. (Source: British Red Cross)

A group of nine young people hailing from Birmingham inner City of Bordesley Green embarked (excuse the pun) on a residential organised by Bordesley Green Detached Project, to support in conservational work for the National Trust in the Welsh countryside of Betws-y-Coed. The aim was to experience a world far removed from the hectic city life style and immerse them in a location that is quite different to their usual surroundings. These young volunteers joined the current 60,000 other individuals that actively support the trust in there duties to make a difference. The task at hand appeared daunting initially, as the young volunteers where required to thin trees that had consumed areas and inhibited other plant life from growing. The group arrived in the Welsh Valleys and were given an induction on how to use the equipment safely whilst undertaking the task, then the group were shown the environment in which they where required to tackle the tree felling. Before them lay beautiful scenery that had over grown, and in doing so inhibited the growth of newly planted Oak trees, that remain indigenous to this isle. With a little bit of care and perspiration the group worked diligently, displaying a skill and a passion that was impressive. They managed to clear areas that at times appeared almost impossible to navigate, but dedication and commitment shown by the young people was unparalleled and demonstrated that collectively and as individuals a difference can been made.

A CUT ABOVE THE REST

A group of young people that are passionate about environmental community work are aiming to re-engage the local community with environmental issues in Bordesley Green. The key issues are creating a sense of awareness of our surroundings, which have a negative impact on our local environment. Our social action campaign aims to instill a sense of ownership in the Inner city areas of Birmingham that are blighted by urban and social decay. This issue is related to communities lacking a connection with their social and physical environment. We have identified waste as being the most visual manifestation of community disengagement. The issue of waste creates a negative attitude towards an area, consequentially allowing other social problems to arise. We aim to tackle this issue through galvanising members of the community to create a better environment for our neighbourhood, also forging a sense of pride within the community by organising activities centred around sprucing up areas, with both theyoung and elderly.

On October 28th Bordesley Green Detached Project had the pleasure of taking a group of ten young people on an organised residential to ‘Outward Bound’ Aberdovey-Wales.The Young people were given the opportunity to explore their capabilities and broaden their horizons whilst viewing the picturesque Welsh coast, along the scenic Irish Sea. The group were called upon to manage their own time, solve problems and so become eective team players and develop essential leadership skills. This enabled the Young people to be thrown into real life situations in challenging environments, allowing them to test new strategies and learn new skills to improve their own learning.

The 3 day visit included various activities such as Mountaineering, Gorge walking, Wall Climb & Abseiling along with other problem solving activities. Team and trust building exercises were

also developed in order to promote cohesive learning. The visit highlighted the dierent leadership and coaching styles, self-motivation

techniques and what makes for a great leader and diligent young adults. This residential provided an experience of a genuine adventure for the whole group. The activities sta involved within ‘Outward Bound’ were very complimentary of the group, stating - They have what it takes.

AWARDS CELEBRATIONBordesley Green Detached Project and it partners held an awards evening in December, to pay homage to all the young people who had made positive contributions nationally having developed their personal and social skills through work and activities. The evening was supported by the local Cllr Mohammed Aikhlaq who said he was privileged to support the projects work with young people in the area, it was also an honour to have him presenting certificates to young people.

Area Youth Officer Ness Cole was ecstatic to be present at the event and was delighted with the young peoples achievements through their hard work with the project work.

We never stopped till all the work was done!

I am thankful for the experience given to me from this residential visit, as the memory shall always be with when facing new experi-ences and meeting new people as my life progresses. It was worth every minute of every day and every drop of sweat made me realise how much my life is worth.

The trips have given me life skills that will be essential to my future, these skills I’ve gained through the many activities on the boat.

Birmingham Youth Services

After 16 months of perseverance, the hard work has finally paid off, with the refurbishment of the POD to be complete by 3rd

March 2012.Our Community CIC through Evo-Youth have worked with a number of agencies for 16 months, to develop youth activities in

Bordesley Green. The aim has been to provide the local community (especially the youths) with an area to interact and develop new skills. Built

on the grounds is a multipurpose skate park, that also has a purpose built unit that houses facilities that shall enable the

community to access new technologies.

Over the years the park had fallen into derelict disuse, and often used as a dumping ground which blighted the area and

promoted a haven for illicit activities. However with consultation and great support of the local people, residents association

and financial supporters (all whom worked tirelessly in acquiring resources, funding and support to get the ‘POD’ up and

running) and begin the process of running youth and community based activities from this location.

After this date Evo-Youth will be in charge of the site and with the support of Bordesley Green Detached Project we will

have a consultation process with young people and the community to make best use of this asset.

We have plans to launch the youth centre and appreciate all your support in making this venture a success for the

community, especially the youths who shall benefit, and making it a better place for all.
