FAB BOOK AWARDSMembers of the Book Club and regular readers attended the Wandsworth Librarian’s FAB Book Awards held at the Wandsworth Professional Centre at the end of last term. Students from across the Wandsworth schools have been reading and voting on their favourite books over the last six months.

Some of the authors of the six shortlisted books attended the Awards ceremony. The students gave presentations about the different books and they also took part in a quiz.Andre Protacio 8HS said: “The thing I liked about the event was that the authors talked about their own ideas and how they came up with the book. During their speeches they told us about how the book came from an idea.”

The climax of the event was when this year’s winner was announced: it was ‘One of us is Lying’ by Karen McManus. The author who lives in the United States sent a video message of thanks. The book which is a murder mystery with a twist was a popular choice amongst those who had read it. Naqibullah Azizi 10DD said: “I liked everything about it: the characters, how they developed, the plot and the twist at the end.”

PRINCES’ TRUSTThe Princes Trust course aims to connect young people with the world of work and equip them with the transferrable skills and knowledge they need to succeed. It also focusses on important life skills such as money management. Ms Baum took a group of Purple Ties to a company called Autonomous Research who are involved with the Princes’ Trust and the Bank of England Museum to compliment the work they are doing on managing money in class.

Faizan Baig 10EG said: “We began by talking about money: how to use it and how to save it. We were told it is better to save money and put it in the bank.”Cashmar Douglas 10EG said: “The best part of the day was when we got to hold a brick of gold at the Bank of England Museum. It was really heavy and we needed two hands to hold it.”

CV WRITING WORKSHOP“On Tuesday 17th April two Year 9 Classes took part in a CV workshop run by Berkeley Homes. The company specialise in building homes in London and the South of England.

Two representatives from the company Marlee Boateng and Noushin Hussain gave a really informative presentation on the importance of CVs and what to include in them. The session also involved a talk on the careers available in construction from apprenticeships to graduate roles. The second part of session involved finding out how to write CV, and one of the things I learnt was that it is not a good idea to have a CV that is more than two pages long as the reader can lose interest. We were also given the opportunity to write our CVs. I found the session really helpful and I feel more prepared to write my CV in the future.” By Mohamed Bawa 9ML

JADEN MEETS SIR MOIt’s not every day you get to meet your hero. But distance runner Jaden Kennedy 9SYS did just that on Tuesday 17th April when he was invited to the London Marathon press conference and met Sir Mo Farah. Jaden won the U13 boys mini Marathon last year and was asked to interview Sir Mo who had just got off a plane from 3 months training in Ethiopia for the London Marathon video. Sir Mo had plenty of tips for Jaden, who will be running the U15 competition on Sunday 22nd April. The video of Sir Mo and Jaden should be available on the London Marathon Facebook page.

VOLLEYBALL NATIONAL FINALSOn Sunday 15th April both the U16 and U18 Volleyball teams played at the Volleyball England National Cup Finals in Kettering but it was not to be our year this year and both teams had to settle for silver.

U18 Volleyball teamThe U18s have had a rollercoaster of a journey in the competition this year. They gave everything they had at the Last 8s stage to defy the odds of progressing to the finals stage, however despite the passion and desire to cause more upsets this year Richmond were simply too strong and clinical.A special mention must go out to the U16s squad who over the course of the season have showed fantastic effort, commitment and attitude to training, matches and their studies. They have played in the London League all season to help with their preparation for the National Cup and many adult teams have been surprised with the level of play and volleyball intelligence. It was only last week that they beat the first rank team in the league 3-1 to shock, not only the opponents, but also the officials and spectators! They have been the hardest working group this academy programme have ever seen and we are immensely proud that they have grown and developed on and off the court into resilient, confident and mature young men.

Focus for these two age groups now turns to their academic exams and then we will have some fun in the sun and sand for the Beach Volleyball seasonThank you to all friends and family that came to support; it is much appreciated. Coach Ashley

Zion and Nahom will represent Bevin and Greenhouse Let’s go boys!!! Coach Renan

YEAR 8 FOOTBALLRed Ties had a tough game against St Cecilia’s School. They ran out eventual 4-1 winners but the score line was flattering for the boys who weren’t at their best. But 3 points is 3 points! Man of the Match to Rayyan Adam 8AO, Jamel Leslie-Hibbert 8UM and Calvin Griffiths 8ALS.
