Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ October 14, 2018 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ October 21, 2018
Message from Deacon Gerard — Refugee Committee!
There is exciting news for our refugee committee! We have been accepted to participate in a sponsorship of a third family, fully funded by the government and a charitable organization. All we have to do is support the family as they integrate into our community. After the successful experience we had with the Alkabalan Family: Adel is in school studying for his citizenship, the children are in school speaking fluent English and Rabaa is in school learning ESL, we feel ready to take on the task of another Syrian family with, of course, the help of our welcoming community. The new family consists of parents in their mid thirties and their six children, five girls and one boy, ages 13 to baby. Adel and his family are ready to welcome and support them as it will also provide some new friendship and community for him and his family. Our understanding is that the government wants this family in Canada by year’s end. We are very grateful for this opportunity to help our sisters and brothers in need. More news to follow.
Dcn. Gerard
"By entering this church it may be possible that you hear "the call of God". However, it is unlikely that He will call you on your mobile.
Thank you for turning off your phones. If you want to talk to God, enter, choose a quiet place and talk to Him.
If you want to see Him, send Him a text while driving."
From the FAMILY OF PARISHES PASTORAL COUNCIL. At our September Meeting of the Pastoral Council, we made a few decisions.
1. Christmas Masses this coming December , will be as follows, as this may help with family plans and those
scheduling for the Liturgies.
Christmas Eve, Monday, December 24, at St. Cecilia’s and St. Bernard’s will be at 7:00 pm.
Christmas Eve, Monday, December 24 at St. Mary’s and Our Lady, Queen of Martyrs will be at 5:00 pm
and 9:00 pm.
Christmas Day, Tuesday, December 25 will be like a regular Sunday schedule.
2. It has been the custom that St. Bernard’s has one evening mass each month, usually, the first Tuesday of
the month. It was decided to share that evening mass with St. Cecilia’s, every other month, beginning in
January. We are trying to serve all parishes, equally.
3. The membership of our Pastoral Council from the conception of the Family of Parishes, was three members
from each parish, plus members from the Parish Team and one Deacon. We will gradually move to two
members from each parish, plus the Parish Team person and one Deacon that will alternate. This will
reduce our numbers to a more workable group.
4. ALPHA is being well supported and we are moving forward, beginning this OCTOBER. 84 people signed
up a few weeks ago and 60 people attended a Gathering on Monday, Oct. 1 to help us decide on the
details. Our ALPHA TEAM is formed and meeting. The first ALPHA will be on MONDAYS, only, at 6:00 pm.
We will meet every MONDAY, but NOT the first Monday of the month to honor the St. Vincent de Paul and
Knights of Columbus Meetings. We begin MONDAY, OCTOBER 22, 6:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s.
5. Please see below, information and an invitation about the Canadian Food For Children that takes place at
St. Mary’s, Simcoe. If you can help and volunteer, please respond. Thanks to Margaret Calder, who
coordinated this ministry for many years and to Deacon Dave that put the following announcement
together.
Father Alan and Father Lucio.
Canadian Food for Children
After 35 years, Marg Calder is stepping away from the monthly organizing of the CFFC, Canadian Food for
Children. Many of you have been generous over the years, bringing food stuffs and other donated items which
were packed up and delivered to Toronto to support Dr. Simone and the CFFC. As you know, many hands make
light the work. You know who you are and thank you. In order for this good work to continue, Dr. Simone is looking
for one or two individuals who are willing to organize the items for delivery to the Toronto location. A number of
Knights have volunteered to do this going forward.
If you feel called to this ministry, or are interested in finding out more, please contact Marg Calder, at 519-428-
2061. She is happy to provide more information for this worthwhile cause.
Please consider being involved in this ministry of outreach, helping children, who have no voice of their own.
There is often a need in Waterford for seniors who need transportation to mass. If you are interested in being
available for this sort of ministry, please give your name and phone number to Bill and Conny Van de Ven, or
email Kathryn Heemskerk, Pastoral Minister, at [email protected]. and she will pass on your name and
number for you.
Thank you!
Eucharistic Ministry
In our parishes, we have several people who go to our Retirement and Nursing homes. Some help with the
masses in the homes, making sure the residents can get to the mass and celebrate with us. Others visit the
residents and take them Eucharist, because if we did not visit them they would miss out. How lucky we are to
be able to go to mass each week, and then in turn to take the Eucharist to those who need it. There are
several Retirement & Nursing homes we visit. Dover Cliff, the Norfolk General Hospital Nursing Home,
Cedarwood Village, Norview, Delrose, Delhi Long Term Care and Golden Pond. Right now we have a need
for people willing to take the Eucharist to Norview. This ministry takes 2-3 hours of time once a month. We
also have a need for people willing to take the Eucharist to the homebound of each of our churches, but
especially in Delhi. Please consider offering the gift of your time and fellowship to this beautiful ministry.
For more information about Norview, please call Julie Hammond 519-426-0595
For more information about visiting in Delhi please call Kathryn Heemskerk, Pastoral Minister for the Catholic
Family of Parishes at either 519-426-0887 or 519-582-1312.
Memorial Mass Every year we take a moment to remember those who have died in the past year (from November 1st , 2017 to November 1st, 2018). A Memorial Mass will be held in each of the four parishes on Sunday, November the 4th. If your loved one has passed away you will be receiving a phone call or email to invite you to the Memorial Mass from a member of the Pastoral Care Team. If you have not heard from us by October 21st, please contact the office and add your name to our list. It is our hope that in coming to receive a candle and spend a moment in reflection that this will be a source of healing and strength in your time of loss. Kathryn Heemskerk, Pastoral Minister

"Pumpkin Prayer"
Dear God,
As I carve my pumpkin, help me say this prayer:
Open my mind so I can learn about You; (Cut the top of the pumpkin)
Take away all my sin and forgive me for the wrong things I do;
(Clean out the inside)
Open my eyes so Your Love I will see; (Cut eyes shaped like hearts)
I'm sorry for turning up my nose to all You've given me; (Cut a nose in the shape of the cross)
Open my ears so Your Word I will hear; (Cut ears shaped like the Bible)
Open my mouth so I can tell others You're near; (Cut mouth in the shape of a fish)
Let Your Light shine in all I say and do! Amen. (Place a candle and light)
