November, 2018

Greetings in this beautiful fall season. October has long been my favorite month. When we lived in Virginia and Maryland, we finally got rid on the oppressive heat and humidity. Out here many people are rejoicing over the first snowfalls in the mountains. October brings us Halloween. It’s origin goes back to Celtic worship where on this night the space between the living and the dead is the thinnest. With the coming of Christianity, the day was named All Hallow’s Eve. a time to remember all those who had died, especially the martyrs who have died for their faith.

We Lutherans particularly mark All Soul’s Eve as the day

Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of All Saints

Church in Wittenberg, Germany. He chose this day because

everyone was expected to attend worship on All Saint’s Day.

He hoped that fellow scholars who could read his Latin would read them and be open to

debating his problems with church practices and beliefs. As we know, his thoughts about the

church soon spread to all parts reaching and teaching us here today.

We, along with Christians throughout the ages, on All Saints Day, November 1, (or the

following Sunday) remember our loved ones who have died. They are the great crowd of

witnesses who gather around the throne of our God—“The Lamb at the center of the throne

will be their shepherd and he will guide them to

springs of the water of life.” (Rev. 7:17)

We are rapidly coming to the end of the church

year, the end of the long green Pentecost

season. Our national holiday Thanksgiving

helps us to look back on our blessings give

thanks to our generous God. Now let us look

forward to the season of Advent, the season of

welcoming our Lord.

Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say rejoice!

CALL COMMITTEE UPDATE

The online system for submitting an MSP, used by the Synod for

the Call process is expedient, but the system is not really set up

to accommodate a two-point parish, a joint call application from

two churches working together. Therefore, we have had a few

technological glitches to work through in getting everything

completed for the MSP and the references. Everything has now

been finalized and we are ready to begin accepting applications.

From here, the Call Committee will be sorting through any

applications received and going through the interview process

with any candidates. The Call Committee is dedicated to their

task and excited to find the person that is the right fit for both

congregations. Please continue to pray for everyone involved in

this work and pray we find

the perfect fit to serve our

congregations.

Thank you,

Call Committee

LCOR's annual Fall clean up day was held on Saturday, October 13th. The

weather was perfect for working outside!! The work load was lightened and more

enjoyable with having many of our church family in attendance. Tasks that were

accomplished included cleaning out the flower beds, trimming the hedges and

bushes around the building, washing the chairs and tables in the fellowship hall,

washing the pews, vacuuming the pew cushions and spot cleaning, cleaning out

the freezer, moving the thermostat from the narthex to the middle office, replacing

light bulbs in the sanctuary and planing and staining the west door into the

sanctuary. Thanks to the WELCA board for providing the delicious lunch and

morning snacks.... Margie, Roxie, Elsie and Row. Many thanks to these individuals

that took time from their own Saturday schedules to accomplish these many jobs

to help maintain our building and grounds: Bob and Margie Dorn, Rockie and

Rowana Ernst, Mark and Vickie Hoffman, Gary Kolpin and Roxie Larson, Barb

Mai, Duane and Elsie Menken and Eric Walek.

A special thanks to the women of Bethlehem for

the greeting cards they collected and donated to

the Denver Women’s Prison. New Beginnings,

the Lutheran parish in the prison, tries to provide

15 cards to each of the 1,000 women. The

women may earn less than $1.00 a day and a card

in the prison shop may cost &1.75.

If you have unused greeting cards, 2019

calendars, or yarn to donate, pass them onto me

and I will get them to the prison. Thanks and

blessings for your help.

Pastor Jeanne Larsen

Pastor Appreciation Sunday was such

a wonderful surprise. Thank you so

much for all the touching messages

and all the great food—plus gift

certificate for a great meal. It means

so much to both my husband Lynn and

me. We want you to know how much

we enjoy being with all of you, too.

God bless you,

Pastor Jeanne

Dear people of “God’s Work, Out Hand’s Sunday,”

Thank you all so much for the holy ad gracious

gift of communion bread which we used Sunday,

October 7th. What a joy it was to share the work

of your hands with our good people in

communion. Blessings on this wonderful

ecumenical ministry!

In peace & Christ,

Christ Congregational Church

Your willingness to share at least 3% of your giv-

ing in 2017 is deeply appreciated and serves to

support what we can accomplish as Christ’s

Church, Better Together. We understand the chal-

lenge that many congregations face in supporting

their basic ministries. As you are able, we invite

you to consider increasing your Mission Support

for 2019 by 1% as one step towards an eventual

goal of investing 10% of your regular giving in

our shared ELCA ministry and witness in this

synod, across our country and around the world.

In gratitude, Bishop Jim Gonia

HISTORY OF BUILDINGS OWNED BY THE BETHLEHEM LUTHERAN CONGREGATION

On July 2.1899, Reverend S. Johnson helped organize the Danish Evangelical Free Church. The services

were held in the Morey School and were in Danish. The first resident pastor was Reverend Jens Madsen

who came in 1903. Under his leadership, a church building was erected on land donated by Christian

Fries and was dedicated on March 11, 1906. The name of the church was changed to St. Ansgar

Evangelical Lutheran Free Church. A parsonage was built in 1911 on Custer Street in Brush.

In 1912, the situation of the Free Church became impractical so the congregation divided forming

Bethlehem Danish Evangelical Lutheran Congregation and St. Ansgar Danish Evangelical Congregation. The

church in the country was shared by the two congregations and the parsonage was deeded to the St.

Ansgar Congregation.

Sharing the country church proved unsatisfactory and in 1924 a stucco church was built on the corner of

Everett and Custer in Brush across the street from the parsonage. The name of the congregation

became The First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brush. A brick building was built in Munn’s Addition

by Bethlehem Danish Evangelical Lutheran Congregation 1922.

The need for a larger church was felt in 1948 and remodeling was begun. The dedication of the larger

church at Custer and Everett was held in 1950. The name was changed to Grace Lutheran Church. In

1954 plans for a new parsonage were made. The original parsonage was sold and moved. A new

parsonage was built and dedicated in 1954.

In 1967, Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Grace Lutheran Church merged into a new congregation,

Bethlehem Lutheran Church, on the corner of Everett and Custer. In this same year, the church was again

enlarged and remodeled. The present church home was dedicated on July 20,1970. In the middle 1980’s

the attic above the fellowship hall was remodeled into four Sunday School classrooms to accommodate

high Sunday School attendance and two storage rooms.

As the church building and the parsonage have aged repairs have been made, roofs have been repaired

and replaced, interiors and exteriors of both buildings have been painted, the church kitchen was updated

with new paint, floor covering and counter tops, two new furnaces were purchased along with an air

conditioner were installed (this was due to carbon monoxide leakage in the old furnaces), smoke

detectors and carbon monoxide detectors were installed throughout the church and parsonage for the

safety of the congregation and pastors’ families, and windows replaced in the parsonage.

Currently the parsonage kitchen is being updated with new cabinets, appliances and flooring. As

Bethlehem and Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer are searching for a new full time Pastor we need to

provide a modern up to date parsonage for them to live in when arriving.

In the most current Bethlehem Lutheran Congregation Constitution approved by the congregation in 2015

it states under Property Ownership: C7.01 If this congregation ceases to exist, title to undisposed property

shall pass to The Rocky Mountain Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. (This means that

the buildings are currently owned by the Bethlehem Congregation and only if we haven’t sold or disposed

of the properties before we cease to exist then the titles will pass to the RMS.) Please read the

Constitution or ask council members if you have any questions.

LCOR has a lot of underutilized space!

Your Church Council is

considering offering some of

LCOR’s classrooms

for use by the

community. We’re not sure

what this will look like, but want to

hear from you. If you are interested or know

someone who might want a work office or storage type space, please speak

to a council member. The space would be available with a suggested

monthly donation to cover utilities and incidentals. Classrooms could be

modified to have locked doors. In addition, your Council is looking to active-

ly promote the use of the fellowship hall by outside organizations—help us

spread the word. We have a full-service kitchen that includes dishes and

utensils, and our hall can seat approximately 150 at tables—more if using

chairs only in lecture style seating. Again, the space would be available with

Fall, 2018

God has truly blessed us by giving each of us two very important gifts. The first is the

gift of faith! Second, is the gift of special abilities and talents! He has entrusted us

with an abundance of tangible and intangible resources. All of these gifts are gifts

from our loving God! Because all of these gifts are truly God’s, not ours, we realize

we are called to share and to give.

As we enter 2019, we have the privilege and responsibility to care for and to be

stewards of all that God has blessed us with in our daily lives. The ability to worship,

donate, bake, cook, sing, play, rake, teach, weed, clean, repair, garden, shovel, and serve

are just a few of the ways that we can give back to God and to our church community

for all the blessings we have received from God. God gives to us in abundance that we

might share in abundance.

Please, prayerfully, consider all of the ways you that you can be a steward at Lutheran

Church of Our Redeemer in 2019. Please complete the stewardship pages and return on

or before Sunday, December 2. Please bring your completed pages and plan to join us

to enjoy a Stewardship Soup Lunch after worship that day.

Help Decorate the Sanctuary for Christmas

It's hard to be thinking about Christmas when we have been enjoying these beautiful fall days, yet plans need to be made now for the Christmas season. Members of the LCOR congregation are invited to purchase poinsettias to place in honor, memory or celebration of a loved one. There will be five colors available to choose from, in a 6 1/2 inch pot. The colors include: red, pink (bright pink), white, marble (light pink and white), and ice punch (bright red and white; no pink).

Poinsettias will be available for $15.25. They will be used to decorate the sanctuary and narthex and then can be taken home after the Christmas Eve worship service. Order forms will be available soon! Poinsettia orders will be taken until Sunday,

November 25th.

If you have any questions, talk to Rowana Ernst.
