Images of theCrossLent 2011Images of the cross are everywhere. Images of the cross hang in peoples homes, areimprinted on t-shirts, jewelry, and key chains. Even the telephone poles can remind usof the cross. Some crosses are made of wood, metal, fabric, porcelain, or plastic. Som
crosses are painted with bright vibrant colors, and others are plain and black. How oftedo we stop to consider the meaning by the cross and how it is being portrayed. For thmessage of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are beingsaved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18. For our journey through Lent thisyear we are going to stop and consider the power of the cross, what it means for ourfaith and life as followers of the cross. In the cross we find strength, faith, healing, anddevotion. If we havent considered the cross beyond weekend worship, tapping into thimages and stories of the cross can broaden and deepen, renew or strengthen ourcommitment to Christ. Exploring the Word of God, art, uses, andhistory of the cross, will help us to capture the meaning of thevarious depictions of the cross. Meditating on its enduringmeaning can help apply its power and principles to everyday life.

Page 2 For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the
LORD bestows favor and honor; no goodthing does he withhold from those whose walk
is blameless. O LORD Almighty, blessed is the
man who trusts in you.Psalm 84:11-12
As I write this, it is the middle ofMarch, but I have my eyes on three importantApril dates. The first is April 22 which is thebirthday of my oldest daughter Rachel. Itseems like just yesterday that she was aprecious little girl with her dad wrapped aroundher finger. Some things just dont change, nomatter what the age of your daughter is.Hmmm. . . . . I noticed her birthday is on GoodFriday. That doesnt happen often.
But that reminds me of the secondimportant date of April. Easter! April 24th. Heis risen! He is risen, indeed! . . . . will be thejoyous response across our land in every
Christian church. We are already working onthe details of all the services of Holy Week. The men are already practicing for the LivingLast Supper, that will be our service onMaundy Thursday. On Good Friday, ourImages of the Cross theme will take us tothat hill outside Jerusalem, where Jesus wascrucified. Our service that night will center onthe Seven last words of Jesus, uttered from thecross. Our Saturday evening service willremind us of the time in between the cross andthe resurrection. Then on Easter Sunday
morning, our four worship services, startingwith our sunrise service, hopefully out in thenew shelter, will all be filled with the joy, thelight, and the life that only the Easter messagecan bring. And bring your appetites, becausethe Bethel youth will be serving breakfast from7:45 A.M. to 11:00 A.M.
The third date is a little more ominousfor us all. Tax day! April 15th. I have alwaysheard that there are only 2 sure things in life . .. . . death and taxes. Death comes once butUncle Sam comes around every year. Even
now I have receipts stacked in neat piles on myoffice desk. I am going through all the creditcard bills highlighting the things I can count asbusiness expenses. I have all the bills for theWhite House that we owned in West Lafayettefor the last eleven years. With no more Gastkids at Purdue, we are delighted that it is sold, but I have to get all those papers together. AndI have been going through the check bookregisters. As I look at each of the entries, I canalmost recap the year, remembering where andwhat was going on when we spent that money.
As I look at the register I can see of ththings we bought, the investments we madwhat we saved, and how much we spent every category. Because we itemize, I knowe have to keep accurate detailed records everything. As much as I dread doing our taxand all the time and energy I put in, there is certain satisfaction at doing this kind oinventory, even if it is just money. I know theven after any and all deductions, there going to be income subject to taxation. Babove all of that, when it comes right down it, I can say with the Psalmnist that the Lohas bestowed on Terri and I favor and provideso many good things in our lives. And whensend my tax forms in, I know we have beeblessed for another year.
What I realize is the best things in mlife, the things I am most grateful for, ththings that bring me the greatest joy anpleasure are not subject to taxation. When yo
have a wonderful wife and great kids who evenow still like spending time with mom andad . . . . when you have good health and cado and enjoy sports and an active lifestyle . . . when you have loyal and faithful friends whare there through thick and thin . . . . . whencan laugh and see the humorous things in liand myself . . . . . when I think about whatgift the time God has given me to work, anrest, and have fun and enjoy new and greadventures in this world God has swonderfully created . . . . . and especially whe
I reflect on the love of Jesus, the faith God hinstilled, and most of all the promise heaven . . . . . BLESSED IS THE ONLWORD THAT COMES TO MIND. IndeeTerri and I are rich and the best part is it is tafree wealth.
Dont let tax day scare you . . . . . . remembthe true wealth God has blessed you witMaybe wont be so bad and there might evebe a little room to celebrate.
Yours in Christ,Pastor Doug

Dedicated BenevolenceIn early 2010 the church council decided that members could designate part of their giving to a restrictedbenevolence account. This was an effort to help those who were upset with the ELCA to be more selfdetermining with benevolence giving. The benevolence dollars would then be used to support local, regional, and global ministries that we would choose. Currently approximately $8,500 that are going to be distributed to
Good Samaritan of Hamilton CountyLutheran Child and Family Services
Food RescueLutheran Disabilities Ministry-Lutheran Outdoor Ministries. These are all worthy ministries that will be blessed by our support. If you would like to have your benevolenceportion of your given to be reserved for designated benevolence, please let Carrie Gschwind, our financialsecretary or one of the pastors know your preference.

Always givinthe glory to God, this is an inspiring story of
simple man who has become the most honoreman in the history of Christian music.
Perhaps you would like to read the story of thmost famous Christian who ever lived? "Jesus, A New Understanding of God's Soprolific author Joseph Girzone ( Bethel has h"Joshua" series of books on the fictioshelves) paints a profound portrait of Jesuthe man. He combines gospel accounts wihistorical facts and figures to make aincredibly moving story of what he believes thlife of Jesus was like.
Want to know the recipe for the barley breathat Jesus used to feed the masses? Or hoabout the lentil soup that Jacob cooked for hbrother Esau, the soup that caused Esau give up his birthright for a taste?? Or thnames of the two herbs that were used to paa tithe? These answers and many historrecipes can be found in "Biblical GardeCooking" by Eileen Gaden. As an AssociaEditor for Gourmet magazine for many yearas well as a frequent traveler to the MiddEast, Gaden concocts an intriguing book recipes that were likely used in Jesuday. Finally, I would like to issue a plea to all librausers: Library materials are due one monafter the day you check them out. If you neemore time, just put a note in my mailbox andwill be glad to adjust the due date! Right nothere are at least 10 people who have nreturned items that were due 3 to 6 monthago! Living the Marks of Discipleship. SERVING OTHERS
"If anyonehas materialpossessionsand sees his

no pity onhim, how can
the love ofGod be inhim? Dear
children, letus not love
with words ortongue butwith actionsand in truth."1 John 3:17-18
A big thank you goes out to Linda Seifert and all of you who
donated for the Canstruction project. The Sunday School
children were very
helpful in donating
just the right cans
to create a large
slice of pizza.
Hopefully, everyonegot a chance to see
it in the education
building. They
created a pizza
cutter also with the
cans. These cans
will be donated to
the Bethel FoodPantry. What a fun
activity! Thanks
everyone.
Also, we would like to thank Grace Community ChurchGrace Community ChurchGrace Community ChurchGrace Community Churchfor hosting their
annual baby drive for our baby pantry. This year they had volunteers delivethe diapers, clothes, equipment, baby food, etc. Each week we were
overwhelmed with their generosity. The church collected items throughou
the month of March. Without folks like the people at Grace, our pantries
would have a hard time helping as many clients as we do. If you know
someone who goes to that church, be sure to say thanks!

CONGREGATIONAL NEWS.
Audio Visual MinistryTechnology is the watchword today in the world and even in the church. When we designed thechurch just 12 years ago we had no idea of how much time and energy the audio-visual area wouldtake. This area has grown and blossomed especially in the last several years. Therefore, we haveadded John Paterson to our staff, in a part time capacity, to oversee, train, and coordinate thisministry area. John has put in a significant amount of time and work in this area so that our servicesrun smoothly and we have been able to broadcast our services over channel 19.
Over the past few years, channel 19 has offered a wonderful service to the community and terrificoutreach for our church. We want to thank Roy and Judi Johnson for their ministry of outreach forBethel and all the churches who shared broadcast time. Channel 19 will no longer be airing churchservices, so we are going to have services available on our web site and God tube. Just one furtherstep in our AV ministry.
LIVING LAST SUPPER
Maundy Thursday,
April 21, 2011 7:00 pm.The Living Last Supper, a reenactment ofLeonardo da Vincis famous painting.
This presentation was last made on March 20th, 2008to a packed house. Like this year, the Living LastSupper was a part of the Maundy Thursday HolyWeek Service back then as well.
Thirteen men from Bethel will be costumed and share brief monologues about the disciple they represent.
Greg Marshall has again consented to play the part of Jesus. And thankfully, most of the veteran performers wbe back for this years presentation.Dr. Tim Yoder, Organist/Music Directorhas been working on providing lot
of special music for this Service.
We ask two things of you:1. Put this date on your calendar and plan to attend.2. We encourage you to invite relatives, neighbors, and friends to this presentation. We believe that
you will blessed by this Service.-Pastor E. Dean Windhorn, Coordinator
