Bethany Christian School Newsletter 2018 1 NEWSLETTER BETHANY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL IN THIS ISSUE Our year is moving quickly as we learn together and enjoy many different experiences. Our Year 6 students are swimming this week and our Year 5 students have been on camp at Illawonga, on the Murray River. We received feedback regarding our Year 5 students “we would like to thank your school for such a great camp with your students, they are a credit to your school”. This is the last week of Reception Wednesday rest days as they are growing accustomed to their new routines and the new learning of being at school. Next Monday is a public holiday and I hope that you take some time to enjoy time together as a family. As the weather begins to cool down and the sun takes longer to rise in the mornings, I am aware of the need to keep up sleep routines and ensure that we continue to eat well to avoid getting ‘run-down’. Children benefit greatly from regular bedtimes and routines to help them to maintain their health. Reading a story together, brushing teeth and a predictable night time routine all help to sleep soundly and wake refreshed in the morning. Last week our Rudolph group students were able to skype with Dr Yong Zhao in the USA. He reminded us of our purpose as a group, and encouraged our students to continue to take responsibility for their learning, finding ways to discover and use their individual strengths to make the world a better place for others. Aaron Mabikafola and I will continue to work with these students, and others, to help build opportunities to discover how learning could be improved here at Bethany. We have also been working with ACARA through a Digital Technology project to see how this area of the Australian Curriculum can be outworked within our school. Our Year 3 teachers are working with Jeremy Graetz, our IT manager, and Steve Grant from ACARA, to explore the topic of jobs for the future. We continue to think about the importance of preparing our students for a different future that will certainly involve technology in many ways. We hope to strengthen our understandings and explore how students can understand themselves and consider their future work. This also supports our professional learning with NoTosh to help all students and teachers to think about learning with purpose and on purpose, to ensure that Bethany teachers and students have opportunities to think, create and work together. Our school Cross Country event is coming on Thursday 22nd March. This is a fundraising event run by the Sports Department at Bethany to raise money for sporting equipment in our school. We encourage all students to participate and do their best. You will receive more information regarding this very soon. Our Autumn Fair is almost here. If you are providing a community stall, applications need to be in by 5pm Wednesday 14th March. It is shaping up to be an exciting day with a wide range of stalls with food, fun and interesting things to look at and buy. Please make sure you are able to come along and enjoy some time with us on the day and if you would like to volunteer some time, your teachers would love to hear from you. The student art competition is open and I am especially excited to see the wonderful pieces of art that students produce showing the topic of ‘growth’. I hope that you are enjoying seeing your child learn and grow and appreciate the importance of talking and thinking together. They do grow very fast and so we must make the most of every opportunity as families. Have a lovely long weekend. DEPUTY’S CORNERWe have come to the middle of the term of a very successful term so far! It has been terrific to see all of our brand new Reception students and new students to Bethany transition into our school so well.

Quite a number of students have been wearing necklaces and bracelets to school. Students are allowed to wear a plain wristwatch. Girls are allowed a single pair of simple stud or sleeper earrings. Some students have been bringing their Fitbit to school, and sadly a few have gone missing. We ask you to ensure that your child leaves expensive or highly sentimental possessions at home. Lovely jewellery (rings, necklaces, decorative earrings, bracelets etc.) are best kept at home for weekend and school holiday wear. They are much safer kept at home. The very last thing we would want to see at school is an injury to a child as a result of playing actively on the playground or oval and an earring, bracelet or necklace has been caught up and caused an injury to a child.

For all information pertaining to the wearing of any jewellery or watches to school, please refer to pages 13-15 of the student diary.

JP Playground

The JP playground is designed for the use of JP Bethany students before school, recess and lunch time play with the supervision of a Bethany teacher. Parents are kindly asked to keep all non-school aged Bethany siblings off the playground.

After school, all Bethany students need to go to the pre-arranged pick up area that you have organised with them. There have been numerous instances where a parent has driven to the front turning circle to pick their child up to find that they are not there

ready to be picked up. Often, this is due to the fact that they are having a lovely time playing in the JP Playground which is unsupervised after school. Not only is this inconvenient to their parent who is waiting to pick up their child or children, but it is also unsafe as there is not a staff member supervising their play. Please reinforce this message with your child.

After school pick up

All Bethany students will be supervised during after school pick up by teachers at the Temple crossing on Countess Street, at the Byron Bay pedestrian crossing (which is not a lolly-pop station, so cars cannot be asked to stop by adults unlike the Temple crossing), the Kiss ‘n’ Drop at the oval end of Bethany and the Turning Circle in the front car park from 3.10pm-3.30pm. At 3.30pm, any students who have not been collected or are not making their own independent way home will be collected and escorted to the Front Office. Any student who has an older sibling who attends Temple will be entrusted into the care of that sibling. Please use wisdom in directing your children on where to wait for you after school. The safest place would be near either the Temple admin office or Bethany Admin office if your eldest child attends Temple and has been given the responsibility of caring for their younger siblings. It may seem like a lot of ‘rules’ but it is to ensure your child’s safety while at school.

I wish you and your families a very safe and wonderful week, and hope you have a lovely long weekend.

God bless you,

Debbie CliffordDeputy Principal

On Wednesday February 21, 2018 we held our annual Senior Ath-letics Carnival. After many years of holding our carnivals at an

athletics venue, it was decided for 2018 that we would hold them at school using both our school oval and Temple Christian College’s oval at the back of the school. The day was a big success with our students having a great time and giving their all in warm and humid conditions.

We would like to thank all the spectators for coming out and supporting our students as they competed. Also, a big thank you to the Year 10 PE classes at Temple Christian College – Paralowie Campus students and Mr Hill along with our volunteers and staff for making this day possible.
