JEWISH EDUCATION IS READY WHEN YOU ARE

As we prepare to begin a new year, it is time to think about ourselves as lifelong Jewish learners. Many times this column deals with our Religious School happenings and announcements. However, you might have noticed that the title of educator's position here at Beth Israel - The West Temple is Director of Congregational and Family Education. Education here is not just for our children.

All of us are important members of a learning community. We represent diverse backgrounds and each of us is on a personal journey as we search to find a way to live our lives that is meaningful. The very Jewish concept of being part of a community - "Do not separate yourself from the community' [Pirke Avot] - is essential as we celebrate, learn, and mourn together.

This year, our Adult Education chair, Mike Belusko, is very excited about creating learning opportunities for the adult members of our congregation. As we plan our programs;

1

we are looking to make them accessible and affordable. We will be offering both the single session program and the short ~eries. For those of you ready to make the commitment to a more intense and long-term program, we are offering Me'ah - a twoyear program covering topics in Biblical, Rabbinic, Medieval, and Modern Judaism.

Are you interested in an adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah program? We can form a class or create an individualized program just for you. Please let me know of your interest ..

According to Jonathan Woocher, president of the Jewish Education Service of North America, the advent of the 21st

century has brought with it a renaissance of Judaism here in America. When you are ready to continue on your Jewish journey - we are here and ready for you. "Jewish education is ready when you are."

New Library Acquisitions By Bob Roth

FOR ADULTS

Jacob Adler, A Life on the Stage ••• A Memoir, translated and edited by Lulla Rosenfeld.

A rediscovery. A lost document of theatrical history written more than seven decades ago is now translated for the first time into English -- the autobiography of the great Yiddish actor Jacob Adler. It is, as well, a history of the Yiddish theater, for which Adler himself was almost single- . handedly responsible -- in Russia, England and the united States.

Adler's astonishing career as an actor took him from tsarist Russia in the late 1800s to London and to New York at the

turn of the century. The only son of an Orthodox

Jewish wheat dealer, Adler was ta~ght the Talmud by his rabbi grandfather and introduced to the stage by his theater-loving uncle. We follow Adler from his school days in Odessa to his youthful boxing career to his apprenticeship with a "hole-andcorner" lawyer to his chance meeting with a group of Yiddish folksinqers whom Adler, now an official with the Department of weights and Measures, brings to Odessa. This launches the Yiddish theater in Russia.

We watch as. Adler begins to understand the work of an actor, not to imitate ·but to play the pa~t as he feels it, because he lives it through himself and his temperament.

Einstein, visionary scientist, by John B. Severance.

Few figures in history have . become such a part of our cultural identity as Albert Einstein, a man whose name is synonymous with the word genius.

In the early part of the 20th century, his theories were so advanced that many prominent · scientists doubted they were valid.

Along the way, the author reveals t he contradictions that made .· up Einstein's chara'cter: He was a misfit who became a celebrity, a pacifist whose work made · possible the creation of the atom bomb, and a nonreligious man who became a leading voice for the Zionist movement.

rugh Holy Days 5761/2000: Leave The Corners of Our' Fields

for the Poor and the Stranger

This is the fast I have cfwsen ... to share your bread with the hungry ... . [Isalah 58J

Despite an era of unprecedented abundance. millions of American children go to school hungry. unable to concentrate and learn: Millions of elderly people live with hunger each day. uncertain of where their next meal is coming from. And millions of all ages in between struggle under the crushing weight of hunger and poverty.

For the last three years. thousands of modern-day Jews have given life to our Jewish tradition of tzedakah and tikkun olam by supporting "The Corners Of Our Field," a High Holy Days appeal that seeks funds for MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger and food for local charities. Over the last three years. the appeal has raised more than $2.4 million and over four million pounds of food.

Again this year. MAZON has united with the Reform. ConseIVative and Reconstructionist movements in "The Corners Of Our Field." And again this year. we ask you to join iIi this extraordinary act of Jewish pluralism.

As you look inward during these High Holy Days. MAZON .asks that you reach outward to those in need. Please give to MAZON what you would have spent to feed yourself and your family on Yom Kippur. Funds raised will support our grantmaking to programs providing food. help and hope to hungry people in our own country. in Israel and around the world. And please help feed your hungry neighbors by contributing to your congregation's food drive.

Together, we can add meanin~ to our fast. And. together. we can ease the pain of hunger for millions in our country and our world.
