THE BESTT

he annual Best of Windsor contest hasbeen growing incrementally over thepast six years as merchants and resi-

dents alike have developed an increasing inter-est.

Last year, for example, we had the most par-ticipation ever — just over 1,000 ballots weresubmitted. That was up about 150 from the yearbefore.

It only seemed to reason that this year wewould see another increase of about 100-200votes.

Imagine our surprise as piles and piles of bal-lots were ushered through our doors over thepast two weeks. We knew were on our way toanother record-shattering performance.

What we didn't know is that the number ofballots we would eventually count would be not1,200, or 1,500, or 2,000, or even 3,000.

The number easily exceeded 5,000.After tossing out ballots that were perfect

duplicates, we wound up with 4,047 legitimateballots — more than four times what we countedlast year.

Another new wrinkle this year — online voting— produced 2,666 votes.

So what caused the Best of Windsor contestto really take off?

We believe that the public has finally discov-ered just how fun this contest is. We are pretty

sure that it became a contest for one-year brag-ging rights.

We even overheard a couple merchantsbragging about how they would only allow theircustomers to leave the premises after they hadfilled out a ballot.

We also heard about some merchants “part-nering.” That is, they would have their customersvote for a neigboring business if the customersof that neighborning business voted for theirs.

And, so it went. The results have been wonderful. We had several new winners (Theo's Pizza

comes to mind) and some businesses win inmultiple categories (The Border and Austin'sHomestead are just a couple of these).

No one will ever assert that this contest is ascientific representation of real data. However,we should all know by now that this is a fun con-test that has no losers — just winners.

Thanks to all the voters and many, manythanks to all the merchants who got their com-petitive juices flowing this year.

We eagerly look forward to next. And, now, the winners are . . .
