Disneyland.com/Halloween

O ALL OF YOU WHO BELIEVE that one night is not nearly enough to celebrate Halloween, the Disneyland® Resort has one thing to say: you’re right! From the

family-friendly to the slightly spooky to the downright hair-raising (in a good way), Halloween Time at the Disneyland® Resort has been entertaining Guests of all ages for the past four years. And this year, the 5th annual celebration promises even more wicked fun for everyone! Get ready to experience Halloween thrills galore in both Parks, including a special version of a classic Disneyland® Park attraction—Space Mountain: Ghost Galaxy—and the ever-popular The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ in Disney California Adventure™ Park. Your first clue that something strange is going on inside Space Mountain: Ghost Galaxy is the spooky special effects that cause the iconic attraction to change colors before your very eyes. The creepiness continues inside, when your rocket ship veers off course into a mysterious corner of the cosmos that appears to be—gulp!—haunted. Of course, when it comes to spooky fun, nothing can hold a candle to The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™. This once-luxurious hotel has fallen on hard times since a few of its guests experienced an unexpected fall of their own. To this day, it’s said that those who dare to enter the abandoned tower find themselves plummeting 13 stories straight down…into The Twilight Zone® (cue the music). And if you’re a fan of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas film or the Haunted Mansion attraction in Disneyland® Park—or, better yet, both—you won’t want to miss the annual transformation of the stately southern mansion into Haunted Mansion Holiday—courtesy of Jack “Sandy Claws” Skellington and his ghoul crew. Now, if you have little ones in tow when you visit the Parks, you’re going to find plenty of Halloween fun for them, too. After all, what could be more exciting than meeting some of your favorite Disney Characters

dressed up in their Halloween costumes at the Main Street Pumpkin Festival? Well, about the only thing that even comes close would be moseying out to Big Thunder Ranch Halloween Roundup in Frontierland, where you can meet up with Sheriff Woody and his pal Jessie at a real hoedown—complete with toe-tappin’ entertainment, tasty vittles available for purchase (like BBQ ribs and chicken, plus all the fixin’s), arts & crafts and even real-live barnyard critters you can pet! And to round out your day (or night) of fun, treat yourself to a performance of World of Color. Gather the whole family together to watch in wonder as water, light and fire intertwine with Disney storytelling to create a magnificent nighttime water spectacular! (Check your Park guidemap for days and showtimes.) As if all that isn’t enough, there’s more Halloween fun in store if you choose to attend Mickey’s Halloween Party—our annual private costume parties, now held in Disneyland® Park!

Sound like fun? It is! Read on to find out how you can attend this unforgettable nighttime experience. And for more information about Halloween Time at the Disneyland ® Resort, visit Disneyland.com/Halloween.

BACKSTAGEPASS I FALL 2010

Page 9: BEST HALLOWEEN EVERHOOKS DOWN. HALLOWEEN TIME at the Disneyland

As a Disney Legend, Julie has a very unique relationship with The Walt Disney Company, particularly the Disneyland® Resort, where she served as the official ambassador during the 50th Anniversary Celebration. On a recent visit to the Resort, we were able to catch up with Julie for a few moments. She shared with us some of her favorite memories of Walt and her initial visit to Disneyland® Park. Backstage Pass: Tell us, what was it like to work with Walt Disney? Julie Andrews: He had this lovely sparkle in his eyes. He was a kind and generous man with a genial personality. He was welcoming, fun and embracing and he had a phenomenal ability to spot talent. He didn’t come down to the set a lot during the filming of Mary Poppins. When he did, he wouldn’t stay long…just enough to show his encouragement. Occasionally, we would be invited to his office. It was an awesome experience to go up there. His office was filled with awards and iconic images, many of which were from Disney films or Disneyland ®, and he proudly displayed an early model of Epcot®. One day while filming, he said “Come with me. I want to show you what we’re working on.” He took me down to the Audio-Animatronics® sheds…and showed me the early designs for the Audio-Animatronics® figures. The bird used in Mary Poppins was an early generation of these figures, so it was exciting to be there at the exact moment when this was all being created. It was quite something to see. BSP: We hear you have fond memories of your first visit to Disneyland ® Park, is that right?Julie: Yes, I do! Imagine having Walt Disney personally driving you around in a golf cart, giving you a personal tour. Guests at the Park would reach to touch him and call out “We love you, Walt!”Mr. Disney spoiled me in every possible way, and it was a wonderful memory I shall never forget. He took me to the old Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse—he was terribly proud of it—and turned to me and said, “And they say only God can create a tree!” BSP: Recently, you had a horse on the King Arthur Carrousel in Fantasyland dedicated to you. What was that like? Julie: Fabulous! Really fabulous! I learned a lot about carrousel history and how each carrousel has a lead horse. On the King Arthur Carrousel in Fantasyland, the lead horse is Jingles. That was the one they dedicated to me. Jingles is actually quite reminiscent of the horse that appeared in Mary Poppins. It was truly a beautiful moment for me to be honored in that fashion by all the wonderful Cast Members at Disneyland ® Park. It was so kind of them to give me a slightly smaller replica of that horse, and I have it in the most beautiful place…right in front of a huge French window in my home. It really has a place of honor...and my grandchildren love it.

To learn more about Julie’s fascinating life story, as well as her recent books and movies, visit the Artists Corner section of ArtofDisneyParks.com.

STEP (Back)IN TIME

Julie Andrews’ Collection of Poems, Songs and Lullabies is just one of the newest releases by Julie and her daughter Emma. It’s wonderful reading for any Julie Andrews fan!

Disney Legend Julie Andrews recalls her first visit to

Disneyland® Park—and the man who showed her around.

Who hasn’t dreamed of being a superhero? In the highly anticipated new ABC TV series No Ordinary Family, Jim and Stephanie Powell (Michael Chiklis and Julie Benz) and their kids find out it’s usually pretty cool—but sometimes, not so much.

But while the newly powerful Powells adjust to their transformation from regular folks to mighty marvels, it’s up to George St. Cloud to keep them centered and (hopefully) safe, navigating their crime-fighting adventures from a self-styled

“lair.” Series writer/executive producer Jon Feldman had one specific actor in mind for George when he was crafting his script: the versatile Romany Malco.

“These people have superpowers and someone needs to speak on behalf of the viewing audience,” Romany told Backstage Pass. “I get to be that guy. I get to ‘ground’ it, to share the perspective of those of us without these powers who are saying,

‘Really?’ My guy gets to voice that and it’s very funny.” With a remarkably eclectic range of motion picture and TV

credits, Romany only accepts a role that challenges him as an actor. “It’s very important to maintain a level of artistic integrity. It’s about constantly making efforts to stretch and be anything but one thing. I love this role. And Mike Chiklis and I are like peanut butter. Smooth and nutty at the same time. The work environment is incredible.”

Romany is also excited about becoming part of ABC and Disney, with a very special affinity for Disneyland® Park. “Of any television experience I’ve ever had in my life, this is the best I’ve ever had,” said Romany, who is also excited about Disneyland® visits with family and friends. “I’ve got nieces and nephews and godchildren. All my friends are having kids now, so Uncle Romany is the man right now!”

And Romany is not only popular among his family and friends. He and his fellow cast members have plenty of followers on the social networks, too. “People are asking me these questions on Twitter and Facebook along with Michael, Julie, Autumn Reeser and Jimmy Bennett,” he said. “I feel like we’re being very candid about what we know—and the truth is we don’t know much about where the story is going. They’ve done a really good job of constantly surprising us.”

It should come as no surprise to APs—since you know where dreams come true—that Romany Malco has landed a plum role with a dream cast, as well as a “second home” to share at Disneyland® Park. “You know, you’re going to laugh, but since way back, I used to hold business meetings at Disneyland® Park. We’d go there, kick it, eat and talk, so this worked out perfectly.

“It’s a cool place!”

Walk for CHOCCelebrating 20 years of Miracles and Magic through the CHOC Walk.

For two decades, the CHOC Walk in the Park presented by the Disneyland® Resort has raised more than $15 million to help support the care, services, education and research that Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) provides to families of children undergoing medical treatment. This year, that tradition continues with seven days of special events in the Downtown Disney® District—beginning on October 11 and culminating in the 20th annual CHOC Walk in the Park on Sunday, October 17. Visit DowntownDisney.com/Anaheim for a complete list of events and more information.

In the meantime, if you haven’t already, you can still sign up to participate in this year’s CHOC Walk in the Park at CHOCWalk.org. Registration is open until 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 16, or when walker capacity has been reached. Come join us and see firsthand how to make every step count for kids!

IT’S ON!Don’t miss Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam on Disney Channel!

You knew it was too good to last only one summer. After all, Camp Rock was one of the most popular Disney Channel Original Movies ever. So it should come as no surprise that Mitchie, Shane and the rest of the campers have reunited for a sequel that promises to rock even harder than the original!

In Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, the campers return only to discover that their beloved Camp Rock is being driven out of business by the new state-of-the-art music/performance camp across the lake, Camp Star, which has lured away many of its campers and instructors. Naturally, this doesn’t sit well with Mitchie, who refuses to go down without a fight—or in this case, a musical showdown. The rules are simple: both camps put on their best performance. Whichever one has the better talent stays open, while the loser closes down…for good.

You can catch Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam on Disney Channel. And since the soundtrack, featuring 15 original songs, was released on August 10, and the concert tour—starring the Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato and other members of the movie’s cast—is still crisscrossing the U.S. and Canada, you have absolutely no excuse not to know the words to every song!

Premieres Friday, September 3 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Meet MdotGet to know rising star Matthew “Mdot” Finley from Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.

While he may not have the attitude of hotshot Camp Star performer Luke Williams, Matthew “Mdot” Finley definitely has all the talent of the character he plays in the Disney Channel Original Movie Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam. In fact, Mdot is fast becoming one of the hottest young artists on the hip-hop scene. And while Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam marks his first major acting role, Mdot has been a singer, dancer and musician practically his whole life. We talked with him about how he got his start, how he got his nickname and, most importantly, what’s his favorite attraction at the Disneyland® Resort. Here’s what he told us:

Backstage Pass: How did you get started? Were you a musician/dancer or an actor first?Mdot: This is definitely my first major acting role. Back home in Ohio, I did some small things, but music was really my focus. I play piano, saxophone, guitar and a few other instruments. So that was my main focus until I moved out to L.A.

BSP: How did you get the nickname “Mdot”?Mdot: I used to produce back home, so in the credits it would say “Produced by M. Finley.” So they started calling me “Mdot Finley.” Eventually, I just dropped the last name and spelled out the dot…and there it is.

BSP: Are you at all like the character you play in the movie?Mdot: [Laughs] I love Luke, but he’s definitely a little bit more egotistical than me and he’s more about the presentation than I am. But I definitely relate to him in the fact that he’s just there for the music and to put on a show—and he delivers. That’s what I love about him.

BSP: What was it like to be the new guy in the cast—especially since the first movie was such a huge hit?Mdot: It was definitely a little bit intimidating. But as soon as I got into the mix and got to shake hands with everybody and really talk to them, it was great. They were very welcoming.

BSP: What advice would you give to kids who want to do what you do?Mdot: The first thing is to never, ever give up. And seek different opportunities—as many opportunities as you can. That’s important, too. Because you never know where it could lead you.

BSP: What’s your favorite attraction at the Disneyland® Resort?Mdot: The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ is my favorite attraction because I love that drop! I’m a big fan of the drop! Toy Story Midway Mania!™ is my second favorite. And I love California Screamin’ too. That is crazy!

Toy Story Midway Mania! is inspired by Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story films.

Introducing Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Ko Olina, Hawai`i.

Located in Ko Olina, Hawai‘i, near historical sites on the western side of the island of O‘ahu, Aulani is scheduled to open its first phase in the fall of 2011. This spectacular new Resort

will feature 481 two-bedroom equivalent Disney Vacation Club ® villas and 359 traditional hotel rooms on 21 acres of oceanfront property. Sunset-facing hot tubs, a vibrant snorkeling lagoon, a float river running through a specially created

volcanic outcropping, a family-friendly spa and multiple restaurants are among the planned amenities.

“This Resort is going to deliver tremendous experiences on a multitude of levels,” said Joe Rohde, Senior Vice President of Creative for Walt Disney Imagineering. “On one level, this is going to be everybody’s fabulous beachside paradise destination. Lush gardens. A pristine beach. Beautiful sunsets. It’s all of that. But everything you look at, from the artwork and architecture to the furniture and lighting, will speak back to you about Hawai‘i. The more you explore, the more you’ll discover. Everything has a story. And there’s a hidden layer of magic that will inhabit the place; little moments that will happen and surprises that will unfold. There’s just something very Disney about that.” To learn more about Aulani, visit DisneyAulani.com.
