I look very much forward to 2017 when students return to BOPS on Monday 30th January, 2017. Presentation day My sincere thanks to everyone for their attendance at our Annual Presentation Day Assembly. It was an excellent morning, well attended by many parents, family members, friends and visitors. It was great to recognise our students for their achievements throughout the year, culminating in our major academic awards. We showcased our Senior Dance group as well as the choir, and we delighted in celebrating our K-6 students learning achievements. Our student leaders Riya, Lachlan, Lea and Pritom did an outstanding job of leading the assembly and I am very proud of them. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Fletcher and Mrs Wood for their coordination of the the dance group. Thanks also to Mrs Sigg for the wonderful job she has done coordinating our large school choir this year, culminating in our choir performance on Tuesday 13th December. I would also like to acknowledge Mrs Woolley, Mrs Bray, Mrs Sternaras, Mrs Martin, Mrs Reynolds and Ms Tracy, as well as Mrs Travers and Ms Perente for their work preparing and organising our Presentation Day Service. We hope that you enjoyed the event. My personal congratulations to our student award winners. It was great to acknowledge you in front of our community and recognise your efforts and successes. STAFF CAR PARK A gentle reminder that parents and students are not to walk through, or park, in the staff car park area—this is a WH&S safety rule. We need to keep our children safe at all times so please enter an exit through the entry gate near the school sign when arriving at school, or the gates on Wall Park and Orana Avenue.

We have realized many successes for our students and our school this year thanks to the support provided by our parents and caregivers. My thanks to the parents and carers who help with classroom programs, attend parent workshops, and support the Community Hub, which I feel has had its most successful year. Thanks also our entire community for your encouragement of the students at school, your support of school initiatives, the volunteering to be team managers at sporting events, volunteering in the canteen, your support for P&C fundraising events, and support for school educational programs and working bees in the Community Hub. Our fantastic teachers are to be congratulated for their commitment and dedication in working to create a quality learning environment. They have again this year integrated a number of educational reforms implemented through the Department of Education and Communities. Despite the increased workload, throughout every reform and every hour of additional work, their level of care for our students and commitment to teaching and learning is again to be applauded. To my Executive team of Mrs Burgess, Ms Perente and Mrs Travers, my sincere thanks to them for the support provided to me and for their leadership of the school. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work of our Parent and Citizens committee. They have grown this year, implemented a number of new initiative and had a most successful fundraising year. The executive have again worked tirelessly to make a difference for our students. My particular thanks to the P&C executive for never giving up. I would like to acknowledge and give my sincere thanks to Mr & Mrs Simic, the parents of Lea Simic in Year 6 who have generously donated funds towards our Year 6 gift to the school. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Next week we farewell a number of students and their families, who are moving to different areas and of course, sadly, new schools. I wish them every success and hope that your new schools are as enjoyable as Bert Oldfield. And of course we say farewell to our Year 6 students. Many of them have been at Bert Oldfield since 2010. I hope that they seize the incredible opportunities that lie before them and hope that they remember their time from Kindergarten to Year 6 at Bert Oldfield Public School.

Farewell 2016 Presentation day and the final weeks of school for the year give me the opportunity to reflect on the entire year. 2016 has been a very busy and challenging year at our school, with a collection of academic, sporting, and cultural pursuits, as well as a greater level of community involvement. It is easy to lose sight of all the things we get through in an entire year as we approach the final days of term 4, particularly the abundance of activities and achievements that take place outside the 4 walls of the classroom. Around the world, there are many changes occurring in education, and at Bert Oldfield Public School. As we enter 2017, we are committed to providing the best educational experiences and opportunities to meet this ever changing educational landscape. As all Australian schools move forward with new Syllabus documents, we must continue to challenge and excite our students with engaging teaching and learning. The powers that be seem to adopt an ever growing focus on “the data” within learning, as well as an emphasis on student academic outcomes. However, in this day and age it is increasingly important to highlight to the ‘number crunchers’ that teaching is a rare profession. As teachers, we are never able to learn the full impact we have made on the lives of our students. Of course, we receive small clues from the boys and girls, such as improvements on assessments, NAPLAN results, improvement in learning outcomes, and of course, smiles. Some outcomes can be assessed, measured and quantified but there are many significantly and profoundly more important outcomes that are beyond the standard measure, outcomes that I strongly feel may end up providing the most important aspects of our contribution as educators to the lives of our 260 students. To this end, we are encouraging individuals to be partners in their learning, students who know what they are good at, where they are in their learning journey in each learning area, and where they need to go to reach their learning goals. In 2017, this will be an area of great focus for our teaching and learning.

Parent Helpers Morning Tea. I would once more like to thank and acknowledge the parents and helpers who make Bert Oldfield School a lovely community school. On Presentation Day we were able to thank some of our classroom and Scripture helpers, as well as our hardworking P&C members. We love the additional help and support offered by our parents and strongly encourage you to become involved in the school in 2017.

from his busy Christmas preparations and made the

time to visit all the good students at Bert Oldfield

Hi Everyone,

This term at Helping Hands the children have been enjoying our drawing com-

petitions and boat making challenges.

We have been excited to see the different drawings everyone enters into our competition

and the children are pleased to share their artwork with their families and friends.

Our boat challenge has the children thinking about how to make a boat that will stay afloat

using any of the recyclable materials available in the craft area.

We have seen lots of different boats using paper, cardboard and sticky tape.

The children have also expressed interest in gardening this term so we have been planting

seeds and watching them grow as well as trying to grow plants from cuttings.

Our December/January Vacation Care program is now available for you to book your chil-dren in for. If you would like to make a booking or for enquiries please contact the Coordi-nator. Costs are from $3.62 per day. The 23rd of December will be our last day for this year. We will re-open on the 9th of

January 2017.

Need a Break or some extra time to get things done at home coming up to Christmas? We

offer casual before and after school care for as little as $3.96 per morning and $5.68 in the

afternoon.

Please come and see us for an exact quote based on your family’s eligibility for Child care

Benefit and Child care Rebate. There are no upfront costs for enrolments in any of our pro-

grams.

We hope you enjoy the rest of your term.

Thankyou
