I hope that you get to go somewhere special or that you take the time to reconnect with your families and do a great many things together. It has been a very busy and productive term with a great deal of learning within and across the curriculum areas and of course, extra curricula areas. School students return to school on Tuesday 18 th July. I am very much looking forward to seeing all our students return safely for Term 3. EDUCATION WEEK FAMILY BUSH DANCE Celebrating Australia’s History ‘SAVE THE DATE – Thursday 3 rd August’ Education week is a major celebration of NSW Public Education. The 2017 theme “I learn, We learn” is a very relevant theme and this year we have been introducing the NSW History Syllabus to our students. With this in mind, our Education Week celebrations are going to be a throw back to our colonial past. We have invited the “Billy Tea Bush Band” to teach our students some traditional Australian dances connecting our children, teachers and parents with our Australian culture, history and music… and with each other… through dance and fun. Our 2017 Education week Open Day will be held on Thursday 3 rd August, week three of Term 3. This year we will be highlighting aspects of the History curriculum and Australia’s past and holding a family Bush dance on the evening of Thursday 3 rd August to which all families are invited. All stages will be learning a traditional bush dance at school on Thursday 3 rd August and then performing that dance and a variety of other dances with their families on the Thursday evening, along with a sausage sizzle for dinner. More information will come to you at the commencement of Term 3. We hope you are excited and can support your children and us at our evening Bush Dance. Please look out for our separate information note. STAFF CAR PARK A gentle reminder that parents and students are not to walk through, or park, in the staff car park area—this is a WH&S safety rule. We need to keep our children safe at all times so please enter an exit through the entry gate near the school sign when arriving at school, or the gates on Wall Park and Orana Avenue.

SEMESTER ONE REPORTS Teachers are currently preparing the semester one reports, which will be distributed to students at the commencement of Term 3. The additional time frame is an important component of our school learning program, allowing teachers additional time to effectively and accurately assess their students to make evidence based judgements on their levels of attainment and application. The students are still reported on against a 5 point achievement scale, that being Limited (L), Working Towards (WT), Sound (S), High (H) and Outstanding (O). With respect to a students’ commitment to learning, students will be ranked on a 3 point scale, they being Limited (L), Consistent (C) and Outstanding, (O), hopefully giving you a clearer picture of your child’s effort and application to their studies and their school. These reports represent a formative appraisal of your child’s learning and application to their studies across Terms 1 and 2, and provide information which encompasses all six key learning areas, as well as social information. The Bert Oldfield Public School report is a stage based report and provides information about a student’s level of achievement against stage based syllabus outcomes and criteria. When you receive your child’s report, please ensure that you read the accompanying letter that explains the way Bert Oldfield Public School reports on your child’s learning across the Key learning areas and across the 4 stages of learning in Primary School.

As always you are encouraged to focus on the level of effort your

child has made towards their progress and regard it as equally

important as their level of achievement.

VACATION CARE The ‘Helping Hands Network’ have a fantastic vacation program planned for the coming holidays. Please make sure that you have a look at the flyer attached to this newsletter for further information.

PRINCIPAL’S AWARD ASSEMBLY My congratulations in advance to those students recognized by their teachers for excellence in achievement and application to their studies. I am very much looking forward to sharing lunch with you as your reward and presenting you with your certificate of merit at this Friday’s Principals Award Assembly. I am equally looking forward to the PIZZA that inevitably arrives just before lunchtime on the Friday, the last day of term.

COOPERATION DAY I know that I shouldn’t be amazed at some of our students, but if our cooperation day PBL initiative taught me anything, it is once again to not underestimate our students when given the opportunity to do something different. All of our students shone, working together as a team or with peers and leaders to do a variety of cooperative tasks. Our traditional PBL Bee Bops peer mentoring initiative took on a different form this year, manifesting itself into Cooperation Day. All students K-6 were led by our very capable year 5 and 6 student leaders in a number of activities to develop our student’s cooperative skills, all of which were on display last Friday. A great deal of fun was had whilst at the same time exploring the ideals of cooperation, respect, collaboration, leadership and compromise, the activities designed to encourage cooperative skills and team work to solve problems. I commend our senior students who took on a great deal of initiative to lead the activities for their peers. My sincere thanks also to the PBL committee and in particular, Mrs.Travers and Mrs.Sigg for their organisation and delivery of this great event. I very much look forward to the second part of cooperation day towards the end of Term 3, when students will again participate in a range of

cooperative activities.

NAIDOC WEEK Naidoc week celebrates the richness of our indigenous culture and every year, during NAIDOC week and across a great many curriculum areas, we shed a little light on many different cultural aspects of our Traditional Custodians. This week, our students were fortunate to participate in the “Didgeribone” Indigenous show as part of our 2017 NAIDOC celebration. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the skills of the Indigenous performer, “Jupuru” who presented his unique contemporary Indigenous musical show to our students.

A fantastic presentation of music, technology and sound that enabled all our students to participate. Congratulations to each and every student for their respectful behaviour and level of participation.

School Zone Road Safety Our sincere thanks to all of our parents and carers that do the correct thing every morning and afternoon when dropping off their children at school or collecting their children from school. The safety of our students is paramount. Unfortunately, some parents and carers choose to ignore common safety guidelines and are placing their children's safety at risk. And not to mention the potential cost to your wallet and bank account for directly breeching safety regulations and road rules. Attached to the end of this newsletter is a guide from Blacktown Council related to road safety and the corresponding fines for any breeches of the road safety guidelines and rules. Please take some time to familiarise yourself with the rules and consequences that are related to any

infringement.

Please help us to keep our kids safe before and after school by observing

and respecting all road safety rules and expectations.
