Berminghammer is revolutionizing the foundation industrywith its bold and innovative approach to every project.Berminghammer supplies high quality, project specificequipment, serviced by a world-class team of designers, engineers and field personnel. Berminghammer drillingsystems demonstrate the company’s strength in synthesizing

over 100-years of construction experience with innovation andpracticality in equipment design and manufacturing.

Berminghammer drills represent themost ruggedly designed andextensively field-tested all-purpose drills in the foundationindustry. Berminghammerdrills can be used in almost

every type of drillingapplication, from simplydriving an auger to runninga Down-the-Hole-Hammer.There is simply no betterchoice for foundationcontractors than aBerminghammer drill.

The synergy of foundation construction and equipmentexpertise together with talented design engineers placesBermingham in a unique position to assist other foundationcontractors in planning and visualizing foundationconstruction projects. In recent years Bermingham hasprovided contractors with detailed computer models of theirprojects at the planning and bidding stages as well asthroughout production. This allows Bermingham torecommend equipment and procedures, and provideexperienced construction input on site – a service not offeredby other equipment manufacturers.

    PRODUCTION DRILLING

In order to maximize the production ratesof a project every effort must be madeto minimize operations required to moveequipment between pile locations. Foroffshore or coastal projects this ofteninvolves the movement of marine

equipment. Moving and relocating marineequipment can be time consuming andcosting. Minimizing these moves by havingversatile drilling equipment results inhigher overall project productivity.

Versatile equipment also enables acontractor to have an alternate courseof action in the drilling challenges. The equipment can be readily relocatedto another pile and returned once thechallenge has been overcome. Thisfeature is essential to completing aproject on time and within budget.

The Berminghammer lead system inconjunction with our hydraulic drills, drillstring, impact hammer and custom rotarybits allow for maximum reach andexecution of drilling, driving and rocksocketing efficiently and seamlessly.

Reverse Circulation’ drilling involves the supply of air downthrough the drill-string to decrease the ‘effective density’of the water in the center of the drill-string. Operating muchlike an ‘air-lift’, the drilling spoils are carried out of the holethrough this rising column lower-density air/water mixture(see Figure below). Reverse Circulation requires that the

outer annular area of the casing be kept full of water in orderto provide the hydraulic head required to effectively ‘push’ thecentral column of air/water/spoils up and out of the holethrough the central pipe of the drill-string. ReverseCirculation is an effective drilling technique for a wide rangeof hole diameters including very large holes – up to 3-mdiameter and larger. It is also effective for very deep holes, and holes drilled into hard-rock. Another advantage ofReverse Circulation is the ability to control/direct the drilling

spoils by simply directing the discharge pipe to the desiredsite location or even to a dedicated barge (forenvironmentally sensitive, overwater applications). ReverseCirculation can be used in conjunction with rotary drilling bitsas well as Down-the-Hole-Hammer applications. TheBerminghammer Reverse Circulation Drills are particularly

well suited to Down-the-Hole-Hammer applications due to theirsimple, rugged design and construction.

    DIRECT CIRCULATION DRILLING

As the name implies, ‘Direct Circulation’ involves the supplyof air and water down through the drill-string, with thedrilling spoils discharging out the top of the casing. Thismethod of drilling may be better suited to smaller holes andshallow holes, and possibly projects that do not have anyrestrictions on the treatment/containment of the drilling

spoils. When using Direct Circulation with a Down-the-Hole-Hammer, there is no need for a ‘cross-over-sub’ with seal.Direct Circulation also eliminates the need to maintain a

minimum head of water in the casing. This may make DirectCirculation more attractive for a drill-and-drive method ofadvancing the drill casing. Berminghammer drills are wellsuited to either Reverse Circulation or Direct Circulationdrilling.

VERSATILITY IN LEADER STYLELEAD-MOUNTED DRILL RIGS ON CRAWLER CRANE

For use on land or over-water, combining aBerminghammer Drill with a Berminghammer VerticalTravel Lead (VTL) offers the most versatility. Movementfrom hole-to-hole will occur more quickly with this leader

system than with any other drilling system and canoperate on vertical or battered piles. The versatility ofthe leader system can allow for multiple insertions fromone crane/barge location. On one project, aBerminghammer VTL System and a BHD-40 drill out-performed a dedicated ‘drilling-rig’ by 5 to 1.Bermingham personnel specialize in the rig-up and rig-down of our VTL Systems and we have the ability toconnect our systems to virtually any make of crane. AVTL System has the advantage of being able to ‘activate’the weight of the leader and attachments as additional

    ‘crowd’ for the drilling.

    SUSPENDED LEAD/SELF SUPPORTED

In some overwater applications an underhung leader anddrill might be the best choice. If the supporting cranedoes not have adequate capacity to support a VTLSystem, or if the required drilling equipment is veryheavy then an underhung system may be the mosteconomical. Berminghammer leads rigged as underhungleads come equipped with hydraulic gates that can ‘grab’

the casing to maintain the underhung lead is a suitableposition for drilling. Applying ‘crowd’ in this type of leadsystem requires a hydraulic-crowd attachment to bepositioned above (or below) the drill, and uses a pin-connection to the leader to apply crowd. Berminghamhave performed many projects where our hydraulic-crowdsystem has been used effectively.

    PILE-TOP RIG

Pile-top rigs are the more traditional type of equipmentused in Reverse Circulation drilling applications. Althoughwe typically recommend either a VTL System or anunderhung lead system, there are still some instanceswhere a pile-top rig may be appropriate. Berminghamhave used Pile Top Reverse Circulation Drilling rigs formore than 40-years and can assist customers inselecting the most appropriate system for their project.
