Important?

It is important to visit Berlin because it provides many opportunities to learn about the German culture and other historical events that have taken place in or around Berlin.

Brandenburg Gate

During the ruling of the Communist government the gate was part of the Berlin wall. The Brandenburg Gate is now a representation of the reunification of Berlin.

TV Tower

The TV Tower was built between 1965 and 1969. When it was built it was in East Berlin, until the Berlin wall was brought down. The tower is the tallest building in Germany and the second tallest in Europe.

Berlin Wall

The Berlin wall was constructed to separate East Germany (Democracy) and West Berlin (Communist) during the Cold War. The wall was up between the years of 1961-1989.

Kurfürstendamm

Kurfürstendamm was constructed for the Elector Prince Joachim II so he could more easily travel to and from his palace and his hunting lodge. Now Kurfürstendamm is better known for all the shopping opportunities.

Checkpoint

Charlie

Checkpoint Charlie is one of the three checkpoints they had in Berlin. It is located at Friedrichstrasse. The three checkpoints were given names according to the phonetic alphabet. Helmstedt was called Alpha, Dreilinden was Bravo, and Friedrichstrasse was named Charlie.

Reichstag

The Reichstag was the seat of the German Parliamentary. The building was built between 1884 and 1894. Much of the building was destroyed in the 1933 fire and even more was destroyed at the end of the war. The Reichstag was then rebuilt between 1958 and 1972. Since April 1999 the Reichstag has been the seat of the Bundestag.
