Our True Spirit of Clubbing

It turned out by my own miscalculation that last month’s editorial was not my last for the election year of KGNS. Here I am again to preach to members what’s good and what’s not for the club. I will twist and turn for a change in this message.

By the time you read this message, there will be a new committee in place and I hope that they are all blessed by your power to elect wisely. Management Committee members of the club offer themselves to work for you and they, being volunteers, must live up to the expectations of the members who put them in place. I am sure in your wisdom you have elected the right set of people and therefore I urge you all to give them your full support. All of them have good intentions to manage the club for the better for you. It is only with your constant and complete support that they can then deliver.

In my two and a half years as Captain of the club, I must admit I have enjoyed every minute of my time spent here. I feel proud of the things that I have put in place for the benefit of all members. I admit it is indeed difficult to please all but I have given my best and I am satisfied with the things I have tried to do with members’ interests in mind.

Undeniably there will be those who will be unhappy, but with about 5,500 members in this club, nothing can be perfect. The important issue here is that we (the MC) strived to achieve the best and along the way we would have established something good. The club has come a long way in its 43 years and as long as we remain united in the interest of the club, there is little that can happen to change us. We can only go forward.

We see all our older members playing golf in the mornings, pulling along their golf carts, having a good time chatting with their buddies. We see a younger set of players in the afternoons sweating it out in the hot afternoon sun trying to shoot below par. We see a mixture of both old and young again in the evenings straggling along playing the only game they love for health reasons. And when they all finish with their day’s golf, they gather at the Golfers’ Terrace to share their golf escapades or chat about old times or tell grandmother stories. The club is a huge home for all the members and we are all family when we gather in this House of ours. Where else in this country can you find this scenario but in KGNS!

We have amongst us rumormongers who spread false truths, back stabbers who would bad-mouth members they do not take a liking to. We have dissatisfied members who pick on every small issue in the club. We have trouble makers who jump at every mistake others make. They shouldn’t feel proud of themselves for they do not know the meaning of what clubbing is. Fortunately, we are blessed with more members who appreciate what is done, and even more who understand human nature and are ever willing to forgive. Most of these genuinely good members can be seen mixing around and making merry during the time they spend in the club. For this is the true spirit of clubbing.

CaPtaIn’S nOte

Participation in club events increased over the last two years, be it in golf or social or recreation. The Social Nights enjoyed full attendances and the demand for them escalated. Signing up for golf competitions took a sharp upturn. Recreational facilities are more utilized. The gymnasium is ever popular. The swimming pool now sees more children and adults alike over the weekends. The tennis courts are occupied and squash is making waves in competitions at club level. All these encourage the MC to seek more ways of making the club better for you, to create more activities to bring members of all ages, all races and all religions together. Like I have always stated in all my previous writings, a club is where all people gather and are equal in all ways whether in riches or in status, in race or in religion, in health or in sickness. In KGNS ……. ALL MEN ARE BROTHERS!

Hole No. 5 of Putra turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Until the fairway of the original Par-4 is ready for use in late August, it shall be maintained as a Par-3 and that should pose a challenge to all the golfers. There have been suggestions that this hole be maintained as an alternate hole and that it should be played as a Par-3 on some days and as a Par-4 on other days. Golfers are invited to write in their opinions or suggestions on this matter. The MC will certainly take members’ views into consideration before making such a change. In submitting the card to NHS our office will add an additional stroke in your card for that hole if it was played as a Par-3. No additional stroke will be added if it is played as a Par-4. So there will be no discrepancies in your handicap calculation.

Kelana Course players must have noticed the pond edge retaining wall at Hole 13 and the high netting fence on Hole 3. These are the beginning of the changes to be brought to the Kelana Course. The bunkers and the fairway drainage will be looked into next. The greens too will be subjected to more treatment and cultural practices to make them better.

Once again I urge all members not to litter on the courses and smokers do not throw your cigarette butts everywhere. If all golfers can pick up whatever litter they see along their path, the course will surely be cleaner and all members will feel better.

With this edition, I take the opportunity to thank all the members who have supported me through my terms in office. I seek forgiveness from all the members whom I may have unintentionally offended and urge all to give your full support to the MC in the next term, whoever they may be.

ENJOY YOUR GOLF. ENJOY YOUR CLUB. MOST OF ALL ENJOY YOUR FELLOW MEMBERS!

New Membersto the Fore

For a club, induction of new members is like a blood transfusion. New blood means renewal and revitalization because there’s always attrition in that members resign, are transferred and no longer use the facilities or pass on. This time around, 35 newcomers will intermingle with existing members and, no doubt, forge social and professional relationships that enhance their well-being as well as that of the club.

There’s nothing like sport to unite and golf is a game that builds character because honesty and integrity, sportsmanship and etiquette must prevail for the smooth running of the club.

Since the club is of the members, for the members and by the members there will always be talent in the new members that can be tapped for leadership and service, a proper functioning club requires.

Club President Tan Sri Megat Najmuddin had words of welcome and a list of do’s and don’ts for the newcomers to bear in mind at all times. Rights came with responsibilities. If anyone had reason to complain, constructive criticism was the variety that was favoured.

How well the club goes about its business depends on the attitude and actions of members on and off the course. Rules and regulations must be observed because discipline is the foundation of success. Breaches in discipline if left unchecked will give the club and its members a bad name. Abuse of privileges will and must be dealt with appropriately and without fear or favour.

It’s not easy running a club but with commitment and dedication the job becomes lighter and more pleasurable. KGNS has a history worth preserving.

This year the Club Championship started with a Pre-Tournament Dinner on the eve of the championship. Preparation of the Putra Course started two weeks before the 3-week competition with fairways being groomed and bunkers and greens were prepared with extra care. Fairways were cut to 12mm, first cut of the rough to 25mm and the second cut was 50mm while the inside rough was more than 50mm. During play throughout the championship, green speed was never below 9 feet on the stipmeter. The course was not playing difficult as the weather was hot and dry with no rain at all. It was reduced to Par -71 with Hole 5, originally a Par-4, being converted to a Par-3 (Length 216m) with no less difficulty to score.

The Senior Golfers’ Championship for KGNS this year started off very well with 160 entries which included the Super Senior Golfers category. The large field was split to two sessions, morning and afternoon on both days, to cater for the good response. Tee boxes and pin positions were not changed for both sessions.

Over 36 holes, Mohd Chudi, our evergreen senior member at 69 and with a handicap of 5 returned scores of 76 for each day to emerge as the gross champion. Four strokes behind was a new face and name in KGNS, Siow Yoon Keong on 156 gross for 36 holes. Salleh Nulub with handicap of 9 came in third with gross score 160 winning on countback from Abdul Malek Hormat who posted a similar 160. The nett winner was Lee Eng Guan at 8-under handicap followed by Syed Abdul Rahman. In third place was Chan Chiow Boo losing out on countback. Day 1 of the competition saw a short suspension of 25 minutes with no disruption to the play.

The Super Senior Category was competed only in the nett scores and Lee Eng Guan stole the limelight from Syed Abdul Rahman (138) and Ismail Mahmood (139)

The Ladies and Juniors Championship was held the following weekend. The response for both competitions were not as good as anticipated. The competitions were grouped together but played off the different tee boxes. Irene Hong was the gross winner at 153 beating the defending champion Datin Rahmah Arshad by a single stroke. Alyah Tan, who secured third placing, was a distant 171. Alice Chooi secured the nett category with 135 followed by Faridah Hussain and Poon Ann Pin with 139 and 141 respectively.

The Juniors Category based solely on stroke play, saw an encouraging number of players. Mohamad Hisyam Abdul Majid (Hcp 0) won at 148 leaving second and third placings to Muhd Faiz Mahzan (8) and Adam Mohd Jamil (8) who shot 158 each.

The third session of the championship was the 3-day event for Men. With 110 entries it showed that there are many good golfers in KGNS who play to handicap of 12 and below. All competitions were accommodated into one session with a cut off at 60 players and ties for the third and final day’s play. The competition was intense for all three days and lesser golfers were left behind. By the end of Day 2, the usual names were heading the leader board. On Day 3, with the tees pulled back and the pins in tricky positions, the course began to sort out who’s who in KGNS. Shooting below par was impossible on Day 3 even though the course was dry.

Eric Foo played 70, 73 and 77 to emerge gross champion. Ten strokes behind was Sunil Abraham who beat Mahrome Mohamad on countback. Gurjeet on 231, took fourth placing with Victor Lean in fifth losing out on countback. Other names followed in order of merit like Zairul Hisham Zubir, Mohd Chudi Ghazali, Imran Ashok Abdullah, Wahid Mirza, George Cheah, Mohd Jamal Sulaiman and Kevin Yeap.

The nett category was won by Kamarulzaman Md Nor on 211 nett followed by Mohd Nazir Kassim and Kenneth Soo Koon Meng.

During each competition all five Par-3’s had Hole-in-One prizes like Solar Heaters, Golf Sets, Nikon Range Finders, Air Purifiers and a Mazda 2 Saloon Car was an offer on the final day of each event. The players received goody bags that contained items that were useful and Red Bull was around to boost fatigued players while F&N supplied 100 Plus for the dehydrated.

It is my dream to play golf in all the Asean countries. My destination this time was Laos. My local operator was LIBERTY Golf Services operated by my very old friend, Mr Simon Ng, a member of KGNS, and the Laos operator was Mr Benny Tan, an old friend, my former patient as a national hockey player for Malaysia who has a business in Vientiane. The latter seemed to me like he knew everybody in Vientiane after being in that country for the last few years.

Laos, with its capital city of Vientiane, held the SEA Games in 2009. With golf as one of the events contested, the country built a new course just outside the city to accommodate the sport. Not that there weren’t any golf courses in the country but since it was the first time ever they played host, a new course was built. For originality, they named it the SEA Games Golf Club.

Situated about half an hour’s drive outside the city, it is close to the entire sport complex built to house most of the sports in the SEA Games and it appears to have become a white elephant. I believe it was Korean technology that was used and therefore assume it is a Korean designed golf course.

The clubhouse was huge, airy, modern but quite empty. With not many Loa people playing the sport, most of the golfers when we were there happened to be foreigners. The locals who play the game are the rich and powerful.

The course is well designed. The striking feature of most of the holes is the presence of a big tree in the middle or just by the side of the fairways. There were sufficient ponds as water hazards and enough bunkers to trap your shots. However, the greens left much to be desired for want of smoothness and speed. The fairways are wide but uncut. And at too many areas, especially in the rough, it was too soggy. This came about as the entire course was built on a flat plain with no undulations on the course.

Play was reasonable and for average golfers it should be pleasurable for the greens are reachable in regulation. Except for the putting on slow greens, scoring will not be a problem. We played from the white tees as the blue and black tee boxes were not in play for the day. There was no halfway hut in operation so golfers should bring their own fluids. One other thing lacking was availability of buggies. From the original 100 odd that were there two years ago, only about 20 were operational and we had to walk 18 holes for the day.

The changing room was modern but lacked maintenance. The showers did not work well and soap and shampoo were not available in some of the cubicles. So bring your own hair cream if you are bothered by how you look after a golf game.

The food in the cafeteria was a consolation after the game. Nice foods, both local and continental, were available at very reasonable prices. The pro shop sold the normal stuff at almost similar prices in our own country.

My overall assessment of the SEA Games Golf Club? Ma Ma Tei! Or so so only!

There are two other golf courses in Vientiane. One at Kilometer 14 and another about an hour and a half from the city near the casino. From local knowledge these are even less well maintained so we decided to skip them.

The next course we played at was in Thailand in the city of Nhong Khai located over the Mekong River. About half an hour’s drive and over the Friendship Bridge we arrived at the Thailand check point. Fifteen minutes later we were at the door of Victory Golf Club. Just like in any parts of Thailand, the clubhouse was more impressive than that in Laos. The service was better and the golf course was better maintained. The grass was greener, the course cleaner, the fairways better cut and the greens were faster. The course is 15 years old but the good maintenance made it enjoyable. The greens were tricky, being

more undulating, causing us lots of problems. The rough and hazards were abundant adding to the challenge.

Being so far from Bangkok, the course was also quite empty. Buggies were readily available and our package was a player to each buggy. The caddies were well trained having been on the job for more than 10 years at the same club. What was not so nice were the aprons of all the green where the grass was either dead or absent and most of the time one had to play from bare ground. It was a good golf outing for all eight of us even though we did not play our best golf.

The changing room was clean with abundant water, soap and shampoo, as expected in any Thai golf club. It would have been better if there was Thai massage available in the club for we were sapped by the humidity and the heat after the golf game.

For the after food, the Mekong Riverside shops offered all kinds with a mixture of Thai and Lao foods. The presence of stalls and food outlets along the river made it look like a market place and many Loa people shop there for their daily needs coming from Vientiane.

In a nutshell, golfing on Thai soil proved better than on Lao land. But for those who have never been to Laos and love to play golf overseas, Laos or Vientiane is a place to test out of curiosity.

The country is friendly with little or no crime and the people are honest and simple. French food is readily available as a legacy of French colonization in the past. Entertainment wise, the city is not lacking in anything and there are night clubs and karaoke joints all over town. EVERYTHING is cheap and as a non alcohol consumer, I must say their Lao Beer is one of the best in Asia. Laotians are the highest consumer of beer in the region and 98 percent consume Lao Beer.

Four days and three night via Air Asia (MAS does not fly there) with golf, transportation and accommodation

cost me less than RM1800. The hotel we stayed in was right by the Mekong River that would make Sungai Pahang pale in comparison. A three star hotel with breakfast and free wi-fi, clean rooms, huge bed and in-house television, I consider that more than a bargain.

There is nothing really much to see in Vientiane. Tourists gather to see the temples of which there are plenty. Locals and foreigners alike gather at the Victory Arch which resembles the Arc d’ Triumph in Paris but with more eastern architecture. The roads are wide in the city and the impressive bit is the cleanliness. Shopping is mainly done in the Morning Market (Talat Sou) or in the newly built shopping centres. The Chinese invasion is apparent from all the new developments in and around the city judging from the numerous construction of almost anything. The western influence is mainly in the tourists that appear on the streets with their backpacks, sloppy clothes and cameras, and the French loaves that are sold everywhere in the city.

My overall assessment of the trip to Lao for golfing is that it is worth a try.

SOCIaL & ReCReatIOn

A good time was had by about 140 members at the KGNS Social Night on May 3. The Japanese buffet spread was a hit and a three-piece band going by the name of “Ghostriders” kept the night lively with a repertoire of oldies and country and western music as the theme for the night was Good Old Times.

There was another fine turnout for the club’s Muhibbah Dinner and Dance 2012 on 20 June. Members who took to the floor showed their dancing skills acquired from regular lessons. The band played and members ate, drank, listened to golden oldies and danced. A good time was had by all.

The setting lent itself to the night’s theme – muhibbah or goodwill. From the laughter and animated chatting that filled the air it was clear the purpose of the occasion was fully met. Words alone do not generate goodwill. They have to be translated into action and there was plenty of action that night. As club members, we owe it to ourselves to bring about the harmony we seek in our lives.

Social nights at the club enable interaction beyond our immediate circle of friends. It helps reduce tension and friction that are bound to arise now and then, human nature being such. So here’s to more such gatherings.

The band in attendance was “The Strollers 2” and members had no reason to complain about the food served. Lucky draws kept the merriment at a high level. The Organising Committee would like to thank the sponsor, HNL Technologies Sdn Bhd (“Preferred Dealer” by Hitachi Malaysia for home appliances products) for the Lucky Draw prizes.

Success breeds success and the Social Sub-Committee has thus kept its pledge to have more such events to get members to use the club’s facilities fully. The better the use, the better the encouragement for the food and beverage providers to improve their menu and service that tend to be a bone of contention more often than not.

So let’s keep our spirits up and enjoy happy clubbing.

KgnS Pip RMAF inSquash Challenge

In keeping up with our quarterly activities for squash, KGNS hosted the squash team from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) in April 2012.

A total of 24 men and two female squash players from both RMAF and KGNS participated in this high tempo friendly especially as the Air Force is known for their good squash skills and their high fitness level.

Hence on a hot afternoon, the games got underway. The start of the friendly saw the average players going first, leaving the best for the last. One of our KGNS players, Jimmy Saw, was up against a 13-year-old national junior who definitely made him toil for a good hour on the court before winning by the slimmest of margins in the fifth and final set.

After four hours and 13 matches played, our KGNS team emerged 8-5 victors. Many members who were at the club came round to cheer their players on and the turnout from participating players and family members to passers-by was overwhelming. Many who heard the commotion and cheering came and managed to watch some very high quality squash games. Even the food and drinks served this time were not enough as the participants as well the audience all indulged in the offerings.

Our next squash assignment would be at the Singapore Island Country Club where we will be participating in the ‘2nd SICC/Marigold International Jumbo Doubles Squash Tournament’ from July 5th till 8th 2012. We are also planning another friendly possibly in August 2012.

If you are keen to participate or even join us in our social squash practice days, please do not hesitate to contact the squash convener at [email protected].

BEMER: Optimum Microcirculation - New Therapy Methods: A milestone in the history of medicine

The history of medicine is as old as mankind. There have always been ambitious and visionary researchers whose spectacular findings have helped alleviate suffering and cure disease. Such a breakthrough in medical research has now been made in Berlin, after years of research: Scientists at the Institute for Microcirculation, headed by Uni.-Doz. Dr. Med. Rainer Klopp, have developed a method of treatment which improves the body's long-term microcirculation. The BEMER Therapy has managed to assist with the most varied of diseases and suffering and general well-being has been markedly improved without any side-effects. Microcirculation of the human body ensures that even the smallest of blood vessels, arteries and veins are supplied with blood. 15,000 litres of blood are pumped through 100,000 kilometres of blood vessels in the human body every day. Approximately 74 percent of blood circulation takes place in the micro-vessels. As the heart is not capable of doing this job all by itself, the rhythmic alteration of the vessels (vasomotion) assists in the pumping power of the vessels. This motion occurs around three times a minute in a healthy person but in a sick person only once every ten minutes. This is exactly where the BEMER Therapy comes into use, because it significantly improves microcirculation. Microcirculation transports vital nutrients and oxygen and carries away toxins to and from every cell of the body. If the oxygen supply to the tissue no longer functions properly and should toxins remain in the cells, then certain bodily functions may be permanently affected. Researchers at the Uni.-Doz. Dr. Med. Rainer Klopp Institute in Berlin have developed a treatment together with BEMER Int. AG which produces a significant improvement in restricted microcirculation.

This therapy has already caused a stir among experts worldwide. The pioneers of this therapy Uni.-Doz. Dr. med. Rainer Klopp and Peter Gleim founder of BEMER Int. AG, are convinced that they are just at beginning of an entirely new chapter, which will which completely change the face of medicine. Peter Gleim: "Regardless of whether we are talking about the discovery of x-ray, the impact of penicillin or the introduction of MRI, all these and many other pioneering milestones in the history of medicine, have one thing in common - the many years of going from the first step of research, to the real practical application. However, it is impossible today to imagine our daily lives without all these treatments. No human organism "functions" without microcirculation and yet the common perception of it has, up until now, been somewhat shady. After approximately a decade of research Uni.-Doz. Dr. Med. Rainer Klopp has discovered how blood vessels of various sizes can be stimulated with a various degree of stimuli. In contrast to

conventional magnetic field therapy that sends unspecific signals to the body, he has developed a multi-dimensional signal structure, which addresses both the microcirculation and superordinate regulatory mechanisms. This means, that the body can be preventively safeguarded and supported in the healing process, without any side-effects. The aim is not to replace conventional medicine, but to support it. The emphasis of the treatment is not on the symptoms, but on reducing the causes. In addition, exposure to infection is reduced, the body's immunity is strengthened and organs and tissues are better supplied. After strenuous exercise, regeneration is accelerated and performance improved. Furthermore the risk of sport's injuries is reduced. The BEMER product sets are produced on the basis of scientific research results by BEMER Int. AG in Liechtenstein. They guarantee easy application and user-friendly handling. The devices can be used in medical practices and clinics, but also in private households. They open up a totally new approach to modern medicine. The devices have a central controlling unit, the B.BOX and various application modules which specifically convey the BEMER signal structure by B.SPOT or, as full body treatment by B.BODY, into the body. Based on the latest findings, BEMER Research has also developed a special sleep-signal configuration, which supports the regulation and regeneration processes of the body during sleep. The treatment success is astonishing and has been documented in many studies whether in the prevention or in the complimentary application of treatment for illnesses or chronic pain. The therapy devices are medically certified and their scientific effects proven and widely recognised. About BEMER Int. AG//

BEMER Int. AG was founded by Peter Gleim as Innomed International AG in 1998 and was renamed in 2010. The company is based in Triesen in Liechtenstein. The company has a team of 50 employees in Triesen and over 5000 sales partners worldwide. BEMER Int. AG is active in the medical-technical branch and conducts and promotes research in the field of microcirculation. It develops physical treatment methods for greater positive impact on microcirculation. This multi-patented and market-leading technology is applied in many product lines, which the company markets with its own extensive direct sales network and with many representatives in 20 other countries. Around one million users worldwide already use the BEMER Therapy and its effectiveness has been impressively tested and proved in countless scientific studies. About BEMER ASIA SDN BHD

Nur Durriyah Damian Bags KGNS-MAZDA

Sixty-nine lady golfers braved three days of hot weather, dry fairways and fast greens at the Putra Course to pit their skills in the KGNS-MAZDA Ladies Amateur Open.

The quality of the players taking part was top-notch but Nur Durriyah Damian emerged champion having fired a three-day total of one-over 212, beating Michell Koh of Royal Pahang by eight shots.

Nur Durriyah, who just won the inaugural Malaysian Juniors Close, carded a 68-72-72.

“This win and the Juniors Close victory are a great help in my preparation for the Nick Faldo Asia-European final in September, I am still unhappy with my overall game,” said Nur Durriyah.

Michelle Koh, champion of the Malaysian Ladies Amateur in 2009, who has just completed her studies under a golf scholarship in the United States said, “I am happy with my game. Now I want to play more events before deciding what to do.”

Nett Champion was Kwi Hui Bays of KLGCC (handicap 23) who shot 192 (62-65-65).

KGNS’s own Alyah Tan (15) and Siti Azman (14) were champion and runner-up in the Nett A Division.

There were no holes-in-one scored over the three days, although it wasn’t for want of trying as everyone was out to snag the Mazda car on offer.

The prize giving was a fun affair with Dee keeping everyone in stitches of laughter with his antics.

A big thank you needs to go out to all the sponsors, committees and staff for contributing their time and effort in making this event a success.

Harith Danial and Adam Win 1st Leg Klang Valley Junior Golf Circuit

The Klang Valley Junior Golf Circuit kicked off at Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah on 1 April 2012 receiving tremendous response because the parents of these young players know that it is the ideal platform for them to demonstrate their early golfing potential and hopefully go on to bigger things.

The competition commenced at 1.00 p.m. on short-gun start and ended at about 7.00 p.m. The parents were extremely supportive although the local RULE forbids spectators on the course. The event concluded with Hi-Tea and the prize presentation at about 9.00 p.m.

KGNS is the prime mover of this tournament to discover young golfing talents in the Klang Valley area for those between 10 and 18 year’s old.

They are divided into group A (Boys between 16 and 18); B (Girls between 16-18); C (Boys between 13 and 15); D (Girls between 13 and 15); E (Boys between 10 and 12) and F (Girls between 10 and 12). Altogether 75 boys and girls showed up for the first leg of this year’s tournament.

In the end Harith Danial A. Rahim of Bukit Beruntung, Adam Tee of KRTU and Mior Asyraf Haziq of Monterez all shot 78 gross to emerge champions of their age groups. Harith Danial was champion of Group A (Boys 16-18) while Adam Tee beat Mior Ashraf on countback to become champion of Group C (Boys 13-15).

Warda Amira was the proud representative of KGNS when she emerged the champion in her age group (13 -15). She shot 80 gross to beat Nur Alaa Amirah of KGPA who could only manage a 115.
