  • In the past 16 years of specializing in

womens health care, I have developed a

    very individualized approach to servicing

my patients. My intention is to provide you

with the very best medical service!

    When medication and non-

    invasive procedures are unable to

    relieve symptoms, robotic surgery

    is an effective, minimally invasive

    treatment alternative for a range

    of gynecologic conditions. These

include, but are not limited to

    uterine fbroids, endometriosis,

    uterine prolapse and menorrhagia

    or excessive bleeding.

    At Advanced Womens

    Healthcare, PA, we seek to

    provide the highest level of

    care through our highly skilled

    health care professionals and

state of the art technologies. We

    are devoted to addressing the

    individual needs and demands

of patients in a warm and caring

    environment. Our goal is to

    offer patient centered medical

care based on mutual trust and

    communication.

maybe it s the way the

trees become a riot of color.

    Or the knowledge that hal-

loween will soon give us an

excuse to be silly and dress

up in wild costumes. Or sim-

ply the fact that, while surely

cold weather is on its way,

    there are still wonderfully

    comfortable days outdoors

    that rival anything in may.

    whatever the cause, ive

    always responded joyfully to

    the coming of Octoberand

    i gather im not alone.

    the pages of this Bergen

Health & Life cant help re-

    flecting that joy. we celebrate

    the outdoors, for example, in

a Rock and a hard scape

    on page 48, which offers

    lovely inspiration for design-

    ing alfresco living spaces

with both practicality and panache. as for riots of color, youll

find one in a spectrum of Possibilities on page 54, which pres-

ents ideas for flower arrangements that will light up a room, and

another in our home Front department starting on page 30, in

which we show how five popular hues can be as expressive in

home decor as they are on the fashion runway. and we visit a

beautiful Ridgewood home on page 44.

theres more in this issue, of course. in honor of breast

cancer awareness month, we explore the benefits of 3-D mam-

mograms (page 21) and check in with local specialists for the

latest on the bRCa genes that increase cancer risk (page 26).

    BERGEN HEALTH & LIFE | OCTOBER 2015 21

When its time for your annual mammogram, you may have a choice to

make, depending on the imaging facility you frequent: 2-D or 3-D?

Since the FDA approved three-dimensional mammography, or digital

breast tomosynthesis, in 2011, hospitals and radiology centers in Bergen

County have invested in the groundbreaking, potentially lifesaving tech-

nology. Unlike conventional 2-D mammography, which produces a single

fattened image of the breast, tomosynthesis takes multiple images from

multiple angles within seconds. These one-millimeter slices are then

combined to create a 3-D rendering of the entire breast.

The result? Were seeing increased detection of breast cancer,

says Jaclyn Calem-Grunat, M.D., director of breast imaging at The

Valley Hospital Breast Center in Ridgewood. Tomosynthesis makes it

easier to see small, subtle, invasive cancers especially. It also elimi-

nates a lot of problems with overlapping breast tissue and dense

tissue masking other tissue. And architectural distortion, which

has always been a very subtle sign of breast cancer, is

much more readily apparent on 3-D. (Thats distortion of

the breast tissue with no defnite visible mass.)

Unfortunately, not all insurance companies now

cover the cost of 3-D mammography. Some still view

it as experimental, says Dr. Calem-Grunat. It takes

time for everyone to get on board. But I believe it will

be standard down the road. (To read about the BRCA

genes that increase ones risk for breast cancer, see

    page 26.)

A COMEBACK FOR BEER HERE When three-fourths of the states agreed on Prohibition in 1920, beer-loving New Jersey wasnt among

thembut the law applied here anyway. Hundreds of craft breweries closed, and beer making in the Garden

State began a long decline. For decades, writes author and lifelong New Jerseyan Chris Morris, not a

single craft beer was brewed in New Jersey.

You can read that sad tale in Morris new book, North Jersey Beer: A Brewing History From Princeton

to Sparta (American Palate, 2015). With 16 pages of color photos, his volume also touches on some of the

colorful characters who didnt let a mere law stop them from selling beer to quench Jerseyans thirst. For

fans of craft brewing, the book has a happy ending. The industry began a resurgence in 1994, and today

New Jersey boasts 40 craft brewers, writes Morris, with half of them in the north. And it doesnt appear that

things will slow down anytime soon.

  • with Customized Knee Replacement.

At 73 years young, Phyllis Teats is a grandma on the go. Whether

hosting a poolside picnic or cheering at her grandsons ball games,

theres not much that keeps her on the sidelines. Even with crippling

pain from severe arthritis, Phyllis hobbled to activities with ice packs,

creams, wraps and other remediesuntil she realized that two bad

knees had diminished her enjoyment of life.

My arthritis was so bad that my bones were rubbing

together and I was in constant pain. I was walking

like a soldier, said Phyllis. I could barely stand during

the day or sleep at night, and began to fear that my

    legs would give out.

In May 2013, Phyllis consulted with board-certifed

orthopaedic surgeon Robert A. Kayal, MD, FAAOS, who

    recommended customized knee replacement.

    Unlike traditional surgery, this cutting-edge

procedure uses MRI imaging and computer

software to generate a 3-D model of the joint.

Just as no two personalities are alike, knee

joints are unique to each individual, said Dr.

Kayal. With this revolutionary technique, Phyllis

received two new and improved joints made

    especially for her.

Phyllis elected to have both knees replaced,

and both procedures were highly successful.

She can once again bend her knees without pain, and is noticing

greater balance, stability and motion. With a spring in her step, Phyllis is

anticipating this summers baseball games, barbecues and other family

activities. Im improving every day, and life is even better than it was

    before, she said.

GO CLIMB A ROCKTucked away in an industrial park in Northvale is a brand-new

venue where you can indeed go climb a rock. In fact, you can

ascend 42 feet at High Exposure, a state-of-the-art climbing

gym frequented by 5-year-olds, competitors from NBCs Ameri-

can Ninja Warrior and just about everyone in between.

On a recent Sunday afternoon, my children (ages 11 and 9)

test-drove High Exposure. The plan was to spend an hour or

so there, but they were having so much fun that we ended up

closing the place down! They started out in the parkour room.

(Parkour is a training discipline inspired by military obstacle-

course training.) It was set up with boxes, bars, ropes and all

sorts of other equipment designed to get you running, jumping,

climbing, crawling, swinging, vaulting and (sigh) doing ips.

Neither Zack nor Julia had ever done anything like this before,

and it was great to see them go from cautious to con dent in

a matter of minutes thanks to the enthusiastic instructors.

From there we moved into the enormous action/adventure area,

where the kids successfully navigated about a dozen different

and exciting climbing challenges. Among their favorites: scaling

a 42-foot-high stack of cubes, climbing up to and then jumping

off a 35-foot-high plank and negotiating a series of progressively

taller columns and then leaping off the tallest. And we couldnt

leave without both children sitting on the toilet bowl (TP included)

that was positioned at the top of one of the climbing challenges.

The price for an afternoon of indoor entertainment, excite-

ment and exercise: $25 per person. Owner Stephanie Shultz also

offers a variety of classes for both kids and adults throughout the

Lets pretend that on Halloween night 1941, three Hollywood movie executives

scouting locations in Bergen County were brutally murdered at Hotel Fell in

Allendaleand the killer was never found.

Thats the back story for Haunted Hotel, an interactive play presented by

the Park Players at the historic John Fell House on October 23, 24 and 30.

The performance begins with a sance in the Gothic Revival barn to raise the

dead and discover the identity of the killer. From there, the play proceeds to the

interior of the house, where clues are revealed room by roomand audience

members participate in the unfolding action.

John Fell House is the perfect backdrop for this type of event, says Alex-

andra Nolan, managing director of Park Players and the Saddle River Youth

Theatre. When youre in the house after dark, its really scary. I left a bag there

once and had to go back to get it after everyone leftand I was not happy

about it. (The mansion dates back to 1760 and takes its name from its original

owner, a member of the First Continental Congress.)

Plan on spending 40 minutes at Haunted Hotel, including walking time to

and from Archer United Methodist Church, where ticket holders gather. (John

Fell House is just up the road from the church on Franklin Turnpike.) Since its

an interactive event, some [performances] will last longer than others, notes

Nolan. We may have adults who really get into the action and drama, and then

we may have a group of Girl Scouts who are so scared its hard to get them

through the door. Best bet if youre a fraidy cat: Reserve the 6 p.m. time slot.

no way, says cindy Parnes, m.d., F.a.c.o.g., medical

director of the new jersey womens wellness center in

developing a deadly disease by 90 percent.

jolie had tested positive for a cancer-related mutation

abbreviation for breast cancer, that are associated with a

sharply increased risk of breast or ovarian cancer, cancer

of the fallopian tubes or a cancer of the abdomen called

generally, says sharyn n. lewin, m.d., medical director of

the division of gynecologic oncology at holy name medical

center in teaneck, women should undergo BRCA testing if

theyve had certain cancers themselves or if their families in-

clude anyone whos had ovarian cancer; breast cancer before

age 50; two breast cancers in the same person or the same

side of the family; three or more members with breast, ovarian

or pancreatic cancer; a male with breast cancer; or someone

whos tested positive for BRCA1 or BRCA2.

Keep these four facts in mind:

1 Not enough people get appropriate testing. all women who have had cancer of the ovaries or fallopian tubes or primary peritoneal cancer and many women whove had breast

cancer should have BRCA testing, says dr. lewin, so the results

can guide their future treatment and family members screen-

ing. guidelines all support that, but less than 25 percent of

patients nationally are actually counseled about it, she says.

2 even if you test positive for a brcA mutation, you wont necessarily get cancer. the national cancer insti-tute says that by age 70 the disease affects an estimated

55 to 65 percent of women who inherit a BRCA1 gene

mutation and about 45 percent of those with the

    BRCA2 mutation.

but an elevated risk is worth knowing about

so that you and your doctor can consider tak-

ing steps to protect you. one such step is

chemoprevention, the use of medicines to

prevent cells from developing into certain

types of cancer. others are more frequent screening and pro-

    phylactic surgerysuch as jolie had.

3 theres a new test to predict breast cancer risk. called breVagen, it uses a simple cheek swab sample to analyze seven genetic markers, known

as single nucleotide polymorphisms, or snPs,

that are associated with breast cancer. its

a good choice if you have a family his-

tory but your BRCA test was negative,

or if your family history wasnt quite

grave enough to require BRCA test-

ing, says dr. Parnes. if this test is

    positive, a screening mri [magnetic

    resonance imaging] scan may be

    covered by insurance, she adds.

4 Another genetic marker deserves equal billing. the markers for lynch syndromean

    inherited disorder that increases

the risk of many types of cancer in

both men and women, including ovar-

    ian and uterine cancerare

    just as common as the

    BRCA gene but are

    under-recognized,

    dr. lewin says.

    It was important

    to retain the historic

    architecture of the home

    and keep the front of

    the house in alignment

    with the streetscape,

    says interior designer

    Laurence Carr. The

    homes exterior originally

    had one gambrel, so we

    tried to incorporate the

    second gambrel during

    the expansion while

    also maintaining the

    brownstone front. The

    custom mahogany front

    door is surrounded by

    antique glass, allowing

    natural light to filter

    into the foyer.

when InTerIor desIgner LaurenCe Carr and her husband Paul decided to add

1,000 square feet to their 1930s dutch colo-

nial home in ridgewood, they had one goal in

mind: to create a peaceful sanctuary where

their family could reconnect in a calming

environment. we wanted to make the house

more functional while modernizing the look

and feel of the interior, says Carr. It had to be

cozy, but it also had to have enough room for

when our extended family come to visit. My

husband is australian and Im French, so when

our relatives come to the states they tend to

hang around for a while! Carr also hoped to

create a place where her three children would

feel comfortable bringing their friends home.

Its really important for everyone to have their

    space, she adds.

First stop: the entrance hall. when it came

to accessorizing the foyer (left), Carr chose

the rectangular lines of a Chinese medicine

    cabinetwhere the family stores everything

from keys to jewelry to toysas a contrast

to the foyers original curved wall, staircase

and handrail. a stunning antique or piece of

art [the paintings are by French artist Louise

Franoux] can have a strong effect on a space

thats stripped of clutter, fabric or color, says

Carr. The dark chestnut-stained floor plays off

    the foyers pale blue walls.

next stop: the kitchen, the command center

of the house. everything happens here

cooking, meals, parties, notes Carr, so it was

important to create a large, open space for

all of these activities. a champion of light-

colored kitchens, Carr chose to keep a mono-

chromatic color palette: soft gray walls, ivory

    cabinets, sand-colored granite countertops

and a neutral-colored brick backsplash. There

are French country counter stools along with

    BER.1015.home feature.4.indd 45 9/17/15 2:12 PM

it was important to keep the music room

unclutteredalong with the rest of the

houseto create a sense of family calm.

Carrs children play the piano, so

it was important to her to create

a dedicated music room in her

    expanded living space. Deep crown

moulding and a modern version of

a coffered ceiling (I opted for three

    rectangular panels as opposed to

    traditional square blocks, says Carr),

along with deep blue walls and gold

lighting pay homage to a 17th-century

    French interior. An ivory-colored sofa

and armchair paired with a brightly

colored Turkish kilim rug play off the

    rooms black piano. Neutral-colored

    nylon sunshades provide privacy while

allowing natural light to filter in.

    BER.1015.home feature.4.indd 46 9/17/15 2:12 PM

  • There are plenty of places to sit and catch up in the kitchen (above), including French

country counter stools that surround the center island. Carr wanted a clean, simple

design in the master bath (right). You wont see any elaborate crown moulding in this

room, she says. Just soft muted colors paired with sleek accessories.

a loveseat in front of a gas fireplace and a table that seats

six. To achieve a kitchen thats light and airy, Carr created a

bunch of skylights as well as 10 large windows that look out

    into the backyard.

When it came to the master bath renovation, the home-

owner wanted the look and feel of a modern spa. Large

greenish/gray porcelain tiles on the walls and floor, vanities

with curved faucets and frameless mirrors, and polished

chrome faucets and light fixtures work together to create a

calming environment. The window treatments geometric leafy

design is her nod to the green outdoors.

My dream was to create a place where my family could

connect, a respite from our frenetic lifestyle, says Carr. To

accomplish that, it was important to maintain a minimalist and

uncluttered style, fashioning an inviting space where friends

and family could gather. I think weve done that plus a whole

    lot more.
