FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Reflections
It’s amazing to think that here we
are at the end of 2011. It only feels
like yesterday that I was writing the
first newsletter for the year. It has
been an industrious and productive
year, as all would agree.
It’s fabulous to sit back and watch
the changes within the school on all
levels. Our students this year had
many opportunities in a variety of
different areas. We saw, once again
students competing and being
successful in many different sporting
arenas. Our students have been
involved in a myriad of competitive
sports and on the whole we have
walked away holding our heads up
high with the cup. What makes me

more proud of our students is, that
at all times we have participated with
respect and dignity to the opposing
teams. We saw golf being introduced
for the first time as a school sport
and had every student participate in
gymnastics. Students have been given
the opportunities to participate in
writing festivals, Maths Olympiad,
Myscience, Murder Under the
Microscope, organising fun fairs to
raise money for global aid charities,
Art in the Dark, Dance festivals,
Drama classes and much much more.
The school introduced various new
programs this year. This has included
TEN in K-2, a mathematics program
which focuses on early arithmetic
strategies, Focus on Reading in 3-6,
a program developing comprehension
strategies, enrichment class, Circle
Time, Best Start, Multilit and PBL
given a new lease of life. All these
programs and teachers focusing on
teaching systematically and explicitly
whilst differentiating the content to
cater to the learning levels of
individual students has delivered high
results across the school.
All staff within the school have been
given the opportunity to develop
their knowledge of how to teach to
produce the best possible results for
the students and given the
opportunity to develop their
leadership skills in many different
areas.
The school has also been given a bit
of a facelift, a new look more inviting
office, signage for the building
blocks, new basketball courts and
AFL posts, and noticeboards around
the school.
Lastly, the other area which we have
worked hard on developing is involving
the community into our school. We
have had parents helping and
participating in a variety of activities
from helping in the classroom to,
building our veggie patches, to
donating various items, and sharing
their expertise via talks to the
students, helping with sporting
events and sourcing out submissions
for the school to apply for and much
much more. We have also had
organised volunteer groups such as
Timehelp volunteers give up their
time to help our students in the class
with their reading, writing and
numeracy. We have made sure that
the community have been made aware
of the great things Beresford Road
Public School have been up to through
our local newspapers and media.
A school is not just buildings,
technology, books, staff, parents and
students. Individually they do not
make change. Bring all these things
together with a single, clear and
consistent vision and these things
come together to make a powerful
school community. I believe we are
now at this stage at Beresford Road
and this is what I am most proud of.
So thank you to all for allowing me to
start the journey, for giving me the
permission to make changes, for not
always agreeing with me for it has
allowed me work harder to make it
work, for giving me the opportunity
to talk to you and you to talk to me
about your beliefs and needs and
wants for your children. Thank you to
all the parents, students and
teachers for believing in what we
have been trying to achieve. Even
though my tenure as relieving
Principal is coming to an end I look
forward to work with you to continue
the journey which we have started. I
wish you all a safe and happy
Christmas and look forward in seeing
you all next year.
Construction of Toilet Block
We have been lucky to get some
funding for a disabled toilet block
which will commence construction
this week. This toilet block will be
located near the Multicatigorical
class. We are hoping the majority of
the work will be completed by the
commencement of the 2012 academic
year.

SPORT NEWS
Oz-tag News
On December 1st, both the senior
boys Oz-tag and junior boy’s oz-tag
teams participated in the Parramatta
Eels knockout. Both teams had a
fantastic time and showed fantastic
sportsmanship. The junior boys made
it to the grand final, only losing by
two points. A big thank you, to Mr
Cachia, who coached the junior boys
for the day. Thank you also to all the
parents and grandparents who gave
the students a lift and showed their
support during the day.

P&C NEWS
No news to report for the final
newsletter of the year, just a huge
thank you. Thank you to all of the
parents who have supported the P&C
throughout the year. So many of you
have helped us with Pizza Days,
Sausage Sizzles, Mother’s and
Father’s Day Stalls, 5c Challenge and
various other events.
This year we managed to raise nearly
$12,000. That's an amazing effort
from everyone! With this money, we
have been able to help the school
purchase various items such as video
cameras, Dance Costumes, Veggie
Gardens, Smart Boards and at last
Tuesday's meeting, we donated
another $3000 which will go towards
purchasing air conditioning for the
Multi-Purpose Room.
Without your help and support, the
events we hold would not happen and
we would not be able to raise funds
to help around the school. So, thank
you, each and everyone.
Thank you also to Ms Aquilina who has
done a fantastic job as Relieving
Principal. Our P&C meetings have
been very productive and we look
forward to working with you and
various other staff members to help
make our Fete a success in October
next year.
We would like to wish each and
everyone of you a Merry Christmas
and a safe and joyous Holiday Season.
Take care on the roads if you are
travelling and we look forward to a
bright and happy New Year at
Beresford Road Public School.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Road safety tips to discuss
with your children
As the Christmas and New Year holiday season approaches,
thousands of families are set to hit the roads for a holiday
adventure. A concern for everyone across the country is always
that of road safety over this time. There are more people using our
roads at this time meaning there is a higher risk for accident, injury or
even death. Motorists are urged to be extra cautious especially at
night and when passing through residential areas, due to the
unpredictable actions of pedestrians.
Driving tips that will help make sure your journey is a safe one
Don’t set off on a long trip at the end of a day’s work.
Sleep well before travelling. Don’t drive at times you would normally
be asleep.
Take a 15 minute break outside your car every two hours. There are
almost 100 community driver reviver sites that operate throughout
NSW during holiday periods.
Eat well balanced meals at regular times. You need the energy for
brain activity and concentration while driving.
Do not use your mobile phone while driving. Turn off your mobile
phone or keep it on silent.
Pack some quiet activities for the children in the car such as
portable DVD players, books, small computer games, portable music player with headphones.
Road safety this Christmas
Wishing all our families safe travels this holiday season
“Road crashes
account for 58% of
all accidental
deaths among
children aged 5-14
years.”
Double demerit points apply over the holiday period.
Always supervise your children in the traffic environment.
• Click Clack Front ‘n’ Back
when in the car.
• Use the footpath-side door
when getting in and out of a
car.
• Hold a grown-up’s hand when
on the footpath, in a car park
or crossing the road.
Stop! Look! Listen! Think! When
crossing the road.
Cross the road at a pedestrian
crossing where possible.
When getting off a bus, wait
until the bus has gone before
using a safe place to cross the
road.
Always wear a helmet when
riding a bike and don’t ride on
busy roads.
