Phellodendron (Phellodendron amurense) bark is a species of tree of the Rutaceae family used traditionally in China, Vietnam and Korea to support healthy gastrointestinal function.3-6 Traditional texts also advocate for the use of Phellodendron to support healthy liver function and as a tonic to improve the tone, vigor and function of the whole body.5,7-9*
In traditional Chinese herbal preparations, Phellodendron is thought
to have cold and bitter properties and is commonly used to drain
damp heat to support a healthy gastrointestinal tract.3 In addition to
clearing heat and drying dampness, Phellodendron is used to support
healthy liver function.10*
Berberine, the main active constituent of Phellodendron, is an
alkaloid of the isoquinoline group and is a non-prescription herbal
product in China where it has been used since the 1950s for
gastrointestinal health.11 It is listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia
with a recommended dosage of 300-900 mg/day.12 Berberine has
poor bioavailability when administered orally.13 The accumulated
berberine in the intestine may therefore support gut function due
to its direct effect on the intestinal environment.*

Black Cumin Seed Forte
Traditional Use of Herbs
Black Cumin Seed (Nigella sativa)
Often referred to as the “seed of blessing”, it has been
used for centuries as a spice and remedy. Black Cumin is
traditionally used to support healthy liver function which
helps metabolize lipids, and as an effective
carminative on the intestines, providing
relief of mild bloating and flatulence.*
Phellodendron (Phellodendron amurense)
Phellodendron bark has been traditionally used to cleanse
the lower gastrointestinal tract. Cleansing and promoting
health in the lower gastrointestinal tract encourages a
healthy gastrointestinal environment. Phellodendron
has also been used traditionally
to support healthy liver function.*
The typical American diet has changed dramatically since the start of the Industrial Revolution, poor dietary choices combined with chronic overfeeding and physical inactivity are slowly becoming the leading causes of preventable health complaints around the globe.1
Increased consumption of refined sugars, sodium, saturated fat and processed foods has led to an increase in obesity, gastrointestinal
complaints and cardiometabolic issues to name a few.2
As a health care professional, it is important to educate patients on the benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle strategies where necessary
along with supporting supplementation for a healthy gastrointestinal tract and metabolic function.*
