World-class standards for a world-class business

Established 33 years ago, Benkling Engineering – a level 3 BBEEE, 51% black woman owned

engineering company - started out as a sourcing agent within the engineering sector, and has evolved

into a highly experienced manufacturer focusing on medium to heavy fabrication, castings and

forgings for the mining and railway industries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Located in Johannesburg, South Africa, Benkling Engineering offers the highest standards of quality

which have been woven into the fabric of the business, and it’s the reason why Benkling Engineering

is capable of meeting local and international engineering expectations, regardless of the project.

Employing a team of highly qualified and experienced operators who manufacture to ISO quality

standards, Benkling Engineering uses state-of-the-art machinery and industry leading manufacturing

processes.

Providing a one-stop fabrication service from laser or high-definition cutting to computer numerical

control (CNC) precision bending and plate rolling, Benkling Engineering has the operational capacity,

expertise and skills necessary to undertake highly complex steel fabrication projects.

With a fully flexible approach to its customers manufacturing requirements, Benkling has four

major focus areas:

1. Specialised Medium to Heavy Metal Fabrication: metal fabrication – the building of metal

structures, which includes cutting, bending and assembling processes – is Benkling’s core

business. Regarded as a value added process, metal fabrication involves the construction of

machines and structures from various raw materials, which in Benkling’s case, are both ferrous

and non-ferrous metals.

2. Welding Services: employing a team of expert welders – all of whom are certified according to

the AMSE 9 and receive constant updating and training to ensure the standard of welding meets

the code's requirements – Benkling prides itself in being able to offer clients a range of welding

services. This includes CO2, Tig, Mig and stainless steel welding to more specialised welding

such as submerged arc welding.

3. CNC Machining: Benkling’s commitment to service delivery is based not only on flexibility and

world-class standards but also on creating efficiencies in terms of costs and lead-time. In an effort

to reduce the need to outsource, Benkling has established its own in-house machining division

consisting of CNC lathes and radial arm drilling machines. While there are many kinds of

machining operations, Benkling specialises in turning, milling, drilling and miscellaneous

operations, such as burnishing.

4. Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Castings and Forgings: Benkling offers a wide range of castings of

ferrous and non-ferrous metals, using lost wax investment castings to more conventional sand

castings. Approved casting supplier to amongst others Transnet and VAE Africa.

By investing its resources in new products and the latest technology in this field over the last few

years, Benkling Engineering has secured not only a loyal client base but also a growing one.

Benkilng’s traditional clients have been the railway and mining industries; it is the company’s intention

to strategically position Benkling as the preferred manufacture of railway products and rolling stock

components.

From its state-of-the-art factory based in Boksburg, Ekhuruleni, Johannesburg, Benkilng Engineering

currently manufactures over 200 rail and railway components for the African Railway industry.

Leading the change

Benkling Engineering is part of a community that requires all those that reside in it to play their role in

the advancement of our society. The business has therefore developed a supplier development plan,

which will result in a sharp increase in the number of black women and youth-owned businesses from

which it procures its goods and services. There is still much to be done but Benkling has nevertheless

made a minor start in a major direction towards meaningful empowerment of our people. Benkling is

encouraged by the PRASA women in rail (WIR) initiative and prides itself in being at the forefront of

such a paradigm-shifting programme. Benkling looks forward to working with other WOE (women-

owned entities) to deliver world-class rolling stock to PRASA and the African continent.

Women can be catalysts for change

Women have a fundamental part to play in contributing to our socio-economic advancement and canultimately be catalysts for change in the country by creating more jobs and promoting economicgrowth – but only if provided with the proper tools as well as a veracious platform. The South Africangovernment is indeed striving to lead the African continent by placing more emphasis on women ledinitiatives in particular and has created policies and legislations to enable a greater gender balancewithin the business environment.

But industry now needs to pick up the baton and play an active role in this critical process. It is withinthis context that Benkling Engineering – a level 3 BBEEE, 51% black woman owned engineeringcompany – is at the forefront of this advancement.

Benkling Engineering is leading the journey of harnessing the voices of the industry; the path toinspiring and creating future business leaders and women professionals through a series of criticaldialogues and training sessions, aptly titled; The Building Blocks To A Women Led Society – TheMetal Fabrication And Engineering Services’ Industry Putting Women First.

Against the backdrop of a male dominated industry, Benkling Engineering’s CEO, Lungile Njara, presents a welcomed

change. Having studied Political Science and Legal Theory, Njara is a relative newcomer to the world of metal

fabrication and engineering, however she is learning the ropes at rapid speed thanks to an innate enthusiasm for new

opportunities.

Her desire to also create new opportunities for others led her to embrace this dynamic role within the management team

of one of South Africa’s growing engineering companies.

Njara says, “As a lady, at first glance I thought I wouldn’t be able to handle this industry because it has always come

across as a field that requires literal man power, which I now know is not the case. Manufacturing technology has been

invented that makes this industry female-friendly, so anyone is able to manoeuvre a machine that cuts metal into a

shape that has specific designs fed into it, to produce a certain pattern.”

Njara urges women to be more open-minded with regard to their abilities and not restrict their way of thinking

according to the career paths that women have traditionally followed in society. She adds, “Going into the factory for

the first time wasn’t as intimidating as I thought it would be. But I did get a few odd looks from some of the guys as I

think they were shocked to see this lady in heels, who looked like she’d walked into another world!”

Benkling Engineering has embarked on a plan to create more jobs and opportunities for South Africans, to ultimately

enable this country to better depend on its own resources. At the helm, Njara will play a key role in this process as the

country heads into an era that focuses on using its own expertise and manpower.

Njara concludes, “I’m truly excited about being part of an industry that sets out to create a better transport system and

high quality service delivery in other sectors too, and I believe there is great opportunity for growth for anyone

especially young women and men in this industry.”
