KINDERGARTEN TO YEAR 2 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL The teachers are preparing for a day of activity, fitness and fun with our athletics carnival next Wednesday. Please refer to the information on the permission note and return the note to your child’s teacher.

MARKETING CAMPAIGN A special thank you to our Kindergarten parents, Katrina Farrow for leading our marketing program for Belrose Public School, along with Dave Anderson, Kelly Hooker and special drone footage by Naari and Ben Wright. Our video, produced by Zack from beforedawncreative, and prospectus are featured on the website and a special thank you to the photographed students and to the many parents who letterbox dropped during the holidays.

CREATIVE ARTS PHOTOS POSTPONED In light of dancers requiring time to gather their full costume requirements, the photographs for band, choir, chess, dance and the leadership team will be completed with the sports photographs on Wednesday, 14 October.

NAPLAN ONLINE READINESS TESTING FOR YEARS 3 AND 5 In order for Belrose Public School to move to NAPLAN online in 2021, our current year 3 and year 5 students will be com-pleting a readiness test at the beginning of next term to ascertain the capacity of our technology. CHECK-IN ASSESSMENTS Our Year 3 and 5 students will be completing assessments in reading and numeracy as follows: •Year 5 students: Term 3, Weeks 5 to 7 (17 August to 4 September 2020)•Year 3 students: Term 3, Week 10 to Term 4 Week 2 (21 September to 23 October 2020)The Check-in assessment will supplement existing school practices to identify how students are performing in literacy andnumeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to studentneeds. The assessments are mapped to the NSW Syllabuses and National Litera-cy and Numeracy Learning Progressions.

PLAYGROUND UPDATE Thank you to Michael, our General Assistant for installing the bag hooks for our Year 5 and 6 students in the holidays. Whilst we plan for the beautification of the playground, the P&C and staff are utilis-ing our 3.5 hectares of land with the introduction of additional resources for the development of both gross motor and fine motor skills. Each primary-aged class is responsible for their own new bag of sporting equipment. It has become even more exciting at Belrose with the P&C committee and staff organising loose play materi-als and Tonka diggers and bulldozers for digging holes, make ramps and moving sand and soil. There is a growing body of evidence (Hyndman,Benson, Ullah and Telford, 2014) of the benefits of children playing with loose parts including: • Increasing levels of creative and imaginative play• Children play co-operatively and socialise more• Children are physically more active• Curriculum outcomes occur through informal play with loose parts (Wagland,2015) and loose parts facilitate communication and negotiation skills when addedto an outdoor space (Maxwell, Mitchell and Evans, 2008).

THE WORDS AND ART COMPETITION IS BACK! Can we repeat our winning entry from our 2018’s Year 2 students with 'The Daintree Rainforest by the Sea'? Students from Kindergarten to Year 9 who are registered for the 2020 NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge are invited to participate in the competition. Students submit an entry answering the question “What is your favourite book and why?” Entries must be based on a chosen book from the official 2020 NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge Booklists. Students may respond to the question in one of two ways: 1. Create an artwork (illustration, drawing, painting, graphic interpretation) or a video, PLUS write up to 25 words explaining why they chose this particular book2. Write a written piece of up to 250 words answering the question. This could be in the form of a book reviewThe entries will be judged in three grade range categories: Kindergarten - Year 2, Years 3 – 6 and Years 7 - 9The winners in each category will have their work published on the NSW Department of Education website and win an au-thor visit from one of our three Australian authors to their school.

The stage 3 students are deep into this year’s STEM project. The task is to assist “The Belrose Organisation for Marine Protection (BOMP) to design an Aquatica inspired evolved robotic life form that can solve a current oceanic issue” The students spend the first half of the year investigating what are some current oceanic issues, causes and solutions. They have also been working towards an understanding of what is natural and artificial selection. The students of 4/5S, 5D and 6M have pitched to Mrs Stephens, Mr Davidson, Mrs Meikle and finally Mrs Zorian persuading that they understand how they can develop a robotic life form so solve one or more of these issues.

Class 4/5S

I think NAIDOC Day was awesome. I enjoyed Uncle Russell playing the Digeridoo. He could make all the sounds of the animals and we got to have ochre on our faces. I really loved the stories that he told. Amy F

In my opinion, I think NAIDOC Day was fantastic! We got to wear ochre on our faces and we heard a man playing a Digeridoo. He also spray painted our hands onto paper and then when it was dry, he painted animals on our hands. Harper S

I liked the Digeridoo playing, as it had different animal sounds and volumes. The face painting was cool, because you could put it on your hair and it stuck to your hair, holding it in place. Bryce T

Class KIG

I liked the yidiki (didgeridoo) because the yidiki looks good to play. It is really really fun to play. Jasmine P

I learnt that his spirit animal is a snake. He has a snake painted on his arm so he remembers he can’t eat snakes. I learnt that red means blood and white means bones. The hand symbols mean where they live. Ruby G

Class 6M

NAIDOC Day was great, because we learnt about what happens if you take too long to kill an animal and what caves are also like. Uncle Russell played the Digeridoo. That was fantastic and we got to have a listen to some of the sounds played on the Digeridoo. At the end, we got face paint that was made out of materials that you could find in the bush. Then lucky last, we made a piece of Art work using our hands to make out a line. So it made a simple, but nice piece of artwork. Max W

On the 30 July, the entire school from K to 6 participated in the NAIDOC Day celebrations. We met 2 Aboriginal people, Uncle Russell and a nice lady. All the kids at Belrose Public School engaged in the following activities, which were: Hand print artwork, ochre face painting, listening to the amazing, Aboriginal Digeridoo music and loads more. Russell taught us about how Aborigi-nes hunted, lived and ate. Did you know that if you try to kill an animal by throwing a spear and you don’t kill it quickly, then an-other person can throw the spear at your leg to punish you? That is the Law. After Uncle Russell taught us all about the way the Aboriginal people lived, he played some more music and then we left. We love having these guests at Belrose. Sahraa D

When 6M went down to the bottom Cola, Uncle Russell spoke about how he was a snake and how the women and the men are in different groups. Then he played the Digeridoo. Next Uncle Russell painted yellow, red and white on our faces and in our hair. Then, the last part of the session involved us spraying paint on our hands and on a long piece of cloth. So that was NAIDOC Day, the 30 July 2020. Amber K

We first listened to the Digeridoo and he played many sounds like a kangaroo or a Kookaburra, even a rhyming phone. Next, we got our faces painted in red, yellow and white, even Mrs Meikle got her face painted. Then, we finished with our hands being painted on a canvas. I have learnt so much and we will learn more as I go into High School. Xavier A
