We have a month packed full of opportunities for continuing education, wellness programs, entertainment, and exciting outings around Dallas. Like the old saying goes, “good things come in small packages.” Make sure to keep your calendars handy, because you don’t want to miss the bus, the car, or a chance to dance and celebrate. We will kick off the month with a Mardi Gras Party with beads, king cake and a little New Orleans jazz by The Dave Washburn Trio. This year’s Super Bowl Party is not far behind, so wear your favorite jersey and enjoy some delicious tailgate favorites in the Screening Room. And remember, it doesn’t matter who you root for, because we are all winners with good food and friends around. Traditionally, the month of February brings thoughts of love, so we want you all to enjoy a chance to sweep that special someone off their feet. We are hosting our own Belmont Valentine’s Dance, so bring your Valentine or just bring yourself and come join in the fun. Couples and singles alike will find that love is in the air! In January, we were privileged to host photographer Tom Sanders as he photographed our veterans for our very own Veterans’ Photo Gallery. We will unveil the Veterans’ Gallery on the 18th. Tom Sanders will be back to present the collection, along with a special guest speaker, music, and Color Guard to honor our veterans. The gauntlet is thrown .... Let the Chili Cook-Off begin on the 25th! A little known fact is, I, myself, am a Chili Cook-Off Winner (stop by my office to see my trophy) and I am fully prepared to beat Aubrey’s winning recipe from last year! So, residents and families, warm up those Crock-pots... Last but not least, we go from down home cooking to uptown glamour with the Oscar Party on the 28th. Check your calendar for details for ALL these events. I’d like to announce a new member of our Administrative Team, Vivian Black. She joins us as Community Relations Representative with 10 years of experience in senior living. Vivian has many talents, including being an avid antiques collector. Please stop by and say hello when you get a chance, and until next month! ~Nancy Sanders

I can’t believe 2016 has comeupon us so fast. We have so manyfun, exciting times ahead for bothNeighborhood and Circleof Friends.

We were very excited to haveBeverly Sanborn, Vice President ofProgram Development forBelmont Village come to ourcommunity last month. She hasbeen a key in the design andimplementation of Circle ofFriends. Every time she visits, shebrings such knowledge andinnovative ideas to ourcommunity. I hope you all got achance to meet her on her visit.

Besides our NeighborhoodPALS being so compassionate andproviding such wonderful care, Ihave now discovered they are

secret hair and make-up artists! We now have a vanity set up inthe parlor area where we meetevery morning for hair andmake-up. Everyone looks and feelsso beautiful, we have noticed ourmoods are a bit brighter. Wewould love to have individualmake-up bags for each of ourladies with the make-up theyprefer to wear. If families canassist with this process, it wouldbe much appreciated.

Circle of Friends will be startingcommunity outings next month. We are working on places ofinterests and dates. We welcomeany ideas of places you know yourloved ones would want to go. Amonthly calendar of outings willbe posted each month.

Get out and enjoy February - wehave a lot of fun community

events scheduled.

HypothyroidismHypothyroidism—also called

under-active thyroid—is the mostcommon thyroid disorder. Ithappens when your thyroid glanddoesn’t produce enough thyroidhormone, which is essentialbecause thyroid hormone helpsregulate important bodyprocesses, such as yourmetabolism. But with low thyroidfunction, these body processesslow down.

The prevalence of thyroiddisorders increases with age andnumerous morphological andphysiological changes of thethyroid gland during the processof aging are well-known. It is to bestressed that the clinical course ofthyroid diseases in the elderlydiffers essentially from thatobserved in younger individuals, because symptoms are moresubtle and are often attributed tonormal aging.

Hypothyroidism symptomsusually develop incredibly slowly;it can take years for them to showup. Also, some symptoms mimicsymptoms of other diseases, suchas fibromyalgia and rheumatoidarthritis.

Key hypothyroidism symptomsinclude constipation, depression,and fatigue. Pale, dry skin;

sensitivity to cold; joint pain;elevated cholesterol levels; brittlefingernails and hair; unexplainedweight gain; memory problems;and loss of appetite, are othercommon symptoms.

Multiple factors may contributeto hypothyroidism, including:

• Hashimoto’s thyroiditis:This autoimmune disease isthe most common cause ofhypothyroidism.

• medications: Certainmedications, such as lithium, can cause hypothyroidism.

• pregnancy: Hypothyroidismcan develop during or afterpregnancy.

• treatment forhyperthyroidism: Peoplewho have hyperthyroidism(overactive thyroid) aretreated with radioactiveiodine therapy, whichimpairs thyroid function andcan cause hypothyroidism.

• thyroid surgery: If yourthyroid gland is removed, you can’t make thyroidhormone, so you’ll need totake thyroid hormonereplacement.

Doctors use blood tests todiagnose hypothyroidism, including tests to measure theamount of thyroid-stimulatinghormone (TSH) and free thyroidhormone levels in your body. Ifthe TSH test results are normalbut you still havehypothyroidism symptoms, yourdoctor can test for free T4—athyroid hormone—in yourbody. Also, the anti-thyroidperoxidase test can determinewhether hypothyroidism iscaused by Hashimoto’sthyroiditis.

Once diagnosed withhypothyroidism, you’ll need totake medication (thyroidhormone replacement) toreplace your missing thyroidhormone. Thyroid medication—usually a daily dose oflevothyroxine in pill form—issafe and generally very effectiveat treating hypothyroidism. Youmay also need regular bloodtests to see if you need to adjustyour levothyroxine dose. Somecommon brand names forlevothyroxine are Levothroid,Levoxyl, and Synthroid

You can live a full, normallife if you continue to take yourmedicine to controlhypothyroidism. A healthylifestyle—incorporatingnutritious foods and moderateexercise—can also help youbetter manage yourhypothyroidism. Sources:www.endocrineweb.com
