Remembering the Fallenon Memorial Day
In 1868, three years after theCivil War ended, Maj. Gen. JohnA. Logan, leader of a Unionveterans’ organization, establishedDecoration Day as a time for thenation to decorate the graves ofsoldiers who had died in the war.He chose May 30, possiblybecause he knew flowers would bein bloom all over the country onthat day.
Logan’s declaration, in part, said: “We should guard theirgraves with sacred vigilance. ... Letpleasant paths invite the comingand going of reverent visitors andfond mourners. Let no neglect, noravages of time, testify to thepresent or to the cominggenerations that we have forgottenas a people the cost of a free andundivided republic.”
Arlington National Cemeterywas the site of the first officialobservance, attended byWashington dignitaries as well asthe public. After the speeches, children from the Soldiers’ andSailors’ Orphan Home and Unionveterans walked through thecemetery, placing flowers on bothUnion and Confederate graves.
After World War I, May 30became a day to honor fallensoldiers from all wars. In 1971,Congress declared Memorial Day
a national holiday that would becelebrated on the last Mondayin May.
Since 2000, Americans havebeen encouraged to observe aNational Moment ofRemembrance by pausing at 3p.m. local time on Memorial Dayfor a minute of silence to honorthose who have died servingthe nation.

WOW!
The residents of Belmont wouldlike to share the wonderful newsabout an award they created and
the employee who earnedthe award.
Back in February, the residentswere given the opportunity to vote
on an employee who wasdeserving of an award called “TheResidents’ Choice Award,” whichwould be earned by an employeewho stands out in the eyes of the
residents. Several votes werecollected, and almost
unanimously, one person stoodout. Congratulations to Curtis,
our amazing driver. Curtis wearsmany hats, and is beloved by theresidents for his hard work and
dedication to them.Congratulations, Curtis!
Diamonds in the SkyHere on Earth, rainy days are a
rite of spring, but you’d neverexpect diamonds to fall from thesky. However, that may be justwhat is happening on some otherplanets in our solar system.Scientists speculate that duringstorms on Saturn, Jupiter,Neptune and Uranus, lightningtransforms methane in theatmosphere into graphite. As thegraphite falls, intense pressuretransforms it into diamonds.Although the hot temperatures ofSaturn and Jupiter cause thediamonds to melt quickly, thecooler climates of Neptune andUranus allow the precious stonesto stay solid, even as they reachthe planets’ cores.

Galloping to VictoryEach spring, fans of American
horse racing are chomping at thebit during the three races thatcomprise the Triple Crown ofThoroughbred Racing: theKentucky Derby, the PreaknessStakes, and the Belmont Stakes.Get a leg up on the action withthese facts about the ultimateequestrian prize.
Elusive achievement. Winning allthree races of the Triple Crown ina single season is considered thepinnacle achievement for aracehorse. Only 12 steeds haveearned the honor, the first beingSir Barton in 1919.
Decades of drought. The lasthorse to win the Triple Crown wasAffirmed in 1978, until 37 yearslater in 2015 when AmericanPharoah took the prestigiousprize.
Still standing. In 1973,Secretariat made headlines whenhe became the first Triple Crownwinner in 25 years. He also ran allthree races in record times thathave yet to be broken.
Tracking the tracks. The threeevents are run on dirt tracks ofvarying distances. The Derby atChurchill Downs in Louisville,Ky., is a 1 1/4-mile race, thePreakness at Baltimore’s PimlicoRace Course is 1 3/16 miles, andBelmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., isthe longest at 1 1/2 miles.
Our Kentucky Derby Party is onSaturday, May 7th!

Our amazing therapy team, PaxxonHealthcare Services, leads a
presentation for us every month. Thetopics are educational and
health-related, and are always fun!The presentations are every last
Wednesday of the month at 10 amin Town Hall.
This month’s topic: Aspiration.Tip of the month: “When going out to
enjoy the beautiful weather, wearproper footwear so that you havegood support and protection for
your feet when walking on differentsurfaces!”
Health
Your feet are pretty small, considering they have to supportthe entire height and weight of
your body. But they can cause bigproblems. So pay some attention
to your feet. Each step you take involves a
remarkably intricate network ofbones, muscles, tendons andligaments. That complexity—
combined with all the weight theycarry—accounts for why feet can
be so prone to problems, including bone fractures, arthritisand plantar fasciitis, a swelling ofthe thick band of tissue that runs
along the bottom of the foot.If left untreated, foot problems
may worsen. Eventually, the paincould interfere with your ability todo even the most basic things, like
walking up stairs or down thestreet. If pain alters the way youwalk, it can lead to pain in your
knees, hips and back as well. These problems can multiply,
limiting your activity and affectingyour quality of life.
Several things can contribute tofoot pain or numbness. Sportsand physical activity can cause
your feet to hurt or becomenumb. Going too far, too fast ornot warming up properly before
exercise can set you up for painfulor numbing injuries.
Excess weight puts extra stress onyour feet. Poorly fitting shoes and
other footwear are commoncauses of foot problems as well.Health problems can also affectthe feet. Lack of feeling in yourfeet could be a sign of a serious
illness, such as diabetes or a nervedisorder. See your health careprovider if you have unusualnumbness in your feet or footpain that is severe, comes on
suddenly, or doesn’t improve withsimple measures such as rest or
over-the-counter painmedications.
How you walk and move affectsyour feet. Part of that is inherited. Not only do our feet look like ourparents’, but we also walk like ourparents. But you can modify yourgait—either with training or bychanging shoes or using shoe
inserts or pads. You can help keep your feet
healthy by wearing comfortable,well-fitting shoes. Wash your feetregularly (especially between yourtoes), wear clean socks and try to
rotate your shoes to give themtime to air out.
Walking is a great way to exerciseyour feet. You can also try specificfoot exercises. Sit down and rotateyour ankles in one direction, then
the other. In bare feet, sit in achair and curl your toes, thenspread them out. This helps
stretch and strengthen your feet tohelp you balance.
