Civic Affairs Update

Oyster Creek – State Senator Chris Connors arranged a meeting between the CCLC and Congressman Kim where we had the opportunity to express our concerns and gain Congressman Kim’s assistance with regard to Oyster Creek. We have been supplying Congressman Kim’s office with relevant material and are impressed with his eagerness to respond to our need for help. Our issues remain the same – whether the decommissioning company, a subsidiary of Holtec, can turn Oyster Creek back to green fields within their 8 to 10 year stated objective, and further they must accomplish this by not exceeding the value of the trust fund. If they fail to do this, since this is an LLC, the LLC would file bankruptcy and all ratepayers would have to pay to complete the job. Since New Jersey has three nuclear plants, Congressman Kim is planning to form a coalition of New Jersey Congressional men and women to work with him to insure the safety and financial stability of Oyster Creek and the two other Jersey nuclear plants that will be closing in the near future. He is planning to also form a national coalition for all states with nuclear plants that will be closing. Further, groups within states that will be decommissioning nuclear plants have contacted our group in order to benefit from our research. Also, we are still waiting for a response from the NRC for the numerous questions we have submitted. MUA – No increase in water rates this year and we can anticipate a reduction of approximately $80 per year.Lacey Township – The Town Center still needs state approval.Lacey School Board – It appears the school budget has passed with a 2% increase.

“How did you meet the person who has been your friend longer than anyone else?”

Michael Mahon: “Cynthia Ann and I met in our high school Geometry class and I knew all the angles. On May 18th it was 45 years of marriage and she is still my best and “only” friend.”

Diane Dressler: “My friend Renee and I met when we were 5 years old. I was confined to stay in the driveway of our new home. She was playing nearby and we gravitated toward each other. We still get together for dinner and attend Broadway shows.”

Luis Velez: “Freddy and I met in our 5th grade class in St. Peter’s School in Jersey City. He now lives in Puerto Rico; my wife and I visit him every 2 years. He has a daughter living in Minnesota and he comes up occasionally.”

Arlene DeSarno: “Debbie and I actually met in the nursery as we were born 4 days apart. We went through elementary and high school together. She now lives in The Villages and my husband and I do visit with her and her family.”

Vince Navarro: “About 60 years ago, Chris and I met when we were both trying to purchase the same lot. He still lives in the home he built on that lot. He lives in Colonia and we get together quite often.”

Laura Szumera: “My dear friend’s name is also Laura. We met in New York City in 3rd grade. I was walking home from the laundromat and she saw me struggling with my cart. She helped me lift it up over the curb and we have remained friends since that day. She lives in Florida but we still keep in touch.”

OUR GREAT AMERICAN FLAG

On June 14th we celebrate Flag Day and on July 4th, Independence Day. It’s time to once again think about, and honor our National Emblem, the American flag. The flag is a symbol of our great country, our heritage and our place in the world. We owe reverence and respect to our flag. It represents the highest ideals of individual liberty, justice and equal opportunity for all of us.

As a naval veteran I have had the privilege to be at numerous ceremonial raising and lowering of our flag and hear taps being played. It is a tremendous feeling that warms the heart and fills you with the yearning to always be free, to protect our loved ones and each other as well as our country. Our veterans, who have my utmost respect, were the men and women on duty around the world who protected those they loved, as well as our democracy and the freedom loving people around the world.

Following are a few of our customs and regulations on displaying and disposal of our flag around our homes:

It is the universal custom to display our flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness. The flag should not be displayed on days of inclement weather, except when an all-weather flag is displayed. The United States flag should never be allowed to touch the ground.

When a flag is so tattered that can no longer serve as a symbol of the United States, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning. If the edges become tattered through wear, the flag should be repaired or replaced.

This is how our forefathers, indeed, expected us to love and honor the displaying of our flag. So, let’s respect our country, our flag and our freedom.

Pam Onori

VFW Post 10118 at 2652 W Lacey Road, Forked River, accepts flags for proper disposal. Place your flag for disposal any time in the red, white and blue drum at their front door.

Happy Father’s Day 2019

Father’s Day, a celebration honoring fathers, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society, has been celebrated in Catholic Europe on March 19 (St. Joseph’s Day) since the Middle Ages. Father’s Day was brought to Latin America by the Spanish and Portuguese, and March 19 is still the date used in some European and Latin American countries.

A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington, was one of six children raised by a widower. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to gain support for her idea to establish an official equivalent to Mother’s Day. She was successful, and Father’s Day was celebrated in the state of Washington for the first time on June 19, 1910. Men, however, were not so much in favor of the day. One historian writes that they “scoffed at the holiday’s sentimental attempts to domesticate manliness with flowers and gift giving and derided the proliferation of such holidays as a commercial gimmick to sell more products-often paid for by the father himself.” Along came the Great Depression, and retailers redoubled their efforts to make Father’s Day a “second Christmas” for men, promoting goods such as neckties, hats, socks, pipes, golf clubs and other sporting goods and greeting cards. In 1972, Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday, and today it is estimated that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father’s Day gifts.

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers and grandfathers at Sea Breeze. Enjoy your children, grandchildren, neckties, shirts, golf clubs, and the barbecuing you may be doing.

Photography Club Outing June 15th - National Nature

Photography DayThe photography club organized a field trip to Cape

May on April 23rd. We left the clubhouse at 3:45pm heading to Lucky Bones Grille in Cape May. After a pleasant social and eating experience we headed to the lighthouse for some sunset pictures. Under the expert guidance of Roy and Mike, members were placed in areas of optimum lighting to take some wonderful pictures of the lighthouse. Just when you thought that was great, we moved to the other side of the lighthouse for sunset pictures and mother nature cooperated. The last part of our trip included taking pictures of the Victorian Houses at night. The challenges of photographing with lights in the windows of these beautiful houses were both fun and again another learning experience. A special thank you to Roy and Mike for great planning!

Sports TalkAs you read this month’s article, the calendar has

reached June. That means that the Masters and the PGA championships have been decided. It also means that 2/3 of horse racings Triple Crown have been decided and the final leg, the Belmont stakes will be coming in a week.

This month, I would like to take the time and my space to talk about last April’s NFL player draft and the two New York teams -sorry Eagle fans. (Only a few days after the draft, I had Giant and Jet fans ask what is going on with their teams). I must say that most of the complaints and concerns came from New York Giant fans and their choice of Dan Jones QB from Duke with the sixth pick in the first round. The question is whether Dave Brown another Duke quarterback or Phil Simms from Morehead State. Neither player was a popular choice but one was an all -time Giant quarterback; the other a journeyman player. The way things shape up at the present time with this team you will need to wait several years to know if they have drafted their franchise quarterback or will need to hire a new general manager. Some people felt they could have gotten Jones later in the first round with the next pick up at 17. However, if you felt that he was your quarterback of the future you could not risk losing him. Their next two choices filled a need in the defense front (Dexter Lawrence) since they missed traded away Snacks Harrison and his run stopping ability and in the secondary DeAndre Baker to help replace the departed safety London Collins. Time will tell if this works for the Giants.

The other New York team, the Jets, went with Quinnin Williams, defense lineman with third pick in the first round. Many people felt he was the best player in the draft. The only concern some people had with their choice was the feeling they needed an edge rusher more for their defense. However if you are going to successfully rush the QB, especially Tom Brady, you need inside pressure which now comes from both Williams at the tackles. They addressed their edge rusher with their next pick Jachai Polite from Florida. Like the Giants only time will tell if this strategy works. If you favor other teams I hope your team did well. If you wish to discuss more in detail come to Sports Talk on the third Wednesday of each month. Enjoy the weather

and stay active.Last months trivia questions and answers: first

American golfer to win at the British Open- Walter Hagan. Golf’s Triple Crown win the Masters, the U.S. Open and the British Open in the same year - winner Ben Hogan. The Masters was once a plant nursery and all the holes are named after trees and shrubs.

This month’s trivia question: name the two players in major league baseball who hit for the cycle twice last season.

Summer Dining With A ViewThe days are warm and long, and what better way to

enjoy a good meal than with a beautiful view. Here are a few restaurants that offer just that.

The Avon Pavilion in Avon is on the boardwalk and offers an unobstructed view of the ocean that has been enjoyed by the locals for over 30 years. The menu includes classic breakfast and lunch items, and an upscale dinner menu with signature dishes like macadamia and coconut encrusted mahi mahi, Bourbon Street Gumbo and colossal shrimp glazed with a roasted Siracha glaze atop creamy grits.

The Robinson Ale House on the boardwalk in Asbury Park has two dozen outdoor tables that offer great views of the Atlantic. They have a grilled cheese bar with a half dozen varieties that are all served with tomato bisque. The burgers range from the simple to the completely dressed up with items like spicy mayo provolone, caramelized onions. Dinner dishes include maple salmon, spicy seafood risotto, gorgonzola NY strip and chicken fricassee.

MJ’s Restaurant Bar and Grill is located in the Bayville section of Berkeley Township. This restaurant features an outdoor deck that can seat over 150 guests and has a wonderful view that looks out over a cove in Barnegat Bay. The full menu is served outside and includes burgers, sandwiches, entrees and barbecue dishes that are offered exclusively to people dining on the deck.

The Lambertville Station Restaurant and Inn in Lambertville, NJ is 60 miles away, but if you would like to take a drive on a nice day, this is a wonderful destination. It is a classic American eatery that sits on the banks of the Delaware River, and the alfresco dining offers stunning views of the river. They have a wine cellar that boasts 50 varieties of boutique wines that can be paired with elegant entrees such as champagne chicken and brandy cider pork. If you are considering an overnight stay, the area is a haven for artists and craftsmen, antique shops, galleries and coffee shops on the river.

A Fish TaleI’m a Pisces, the sign of the fish; I have gone fishing

once in my life. I went surf casting in the Hamptons when I was 18. A full day of casting out, reeling in, casting out reeling in and not having anything to show for it other than a sunburn and sore arms. I don’t even eat fish. I cook it on Christmas Eve, but don’t eat it. I think that is my favorite holiday because I’m hungry and I always enjoy the desserts. I have met many Sea Breezers who are getting ready for one of their favorite past-times, fishing. Before retirement, many fishermen and women could only go fishing when they had a day off from work. That made it the best time for them but not necessarily the best time to hook the big one. This sport should take place when the fish are naturally active. The sun, moon, tides and weather all influence their activity. Fish tend to feed more at sunrise and sunset, and during a full moon. Experts claim that the best time is one hour before and one hour after hide tides and low tides. They bite better when the breeze is from the west rather than the north or east and finally, when the water is still or rippled, rather than during a wind. Finding the right time and conditions is just as important as using the correct bait. As my neighbors are lured to cast away, I wish them luck in finding the right spot.

Full-Moon Hikes

Most of these hikes are led by a staff naturalist. They typically begin at dusk. Some of the hikes are timed so that the group is in a particular spot when the moon crests. Investigate these parks prior to visiting, because some require pre-registration for a guided tour.

Tenafly Nature Center (Bergen County); 1.5-mile loop. Perched atop the Palisades cliffs. Start at 313 Hudson Ave.

Schiff Nature Preserve (Mendham, Morris County); 2-mile loop. Start at 339 Pleasant Valley Rd.

The Great Swamp (Harding, Morris County); 1.5-mile loop. Start at 1 Tiger Lily Lane.

Cattus Island County Park (Toms River, Ocean County); 2 miles. Start at 1170 Cattus Island Blvd.

Cloverdale Farm County Park (Barnegat, Ocean County); 2.5-mile loop. Start at 34 Cloverdale Rd.

Bass River State Forest (Burlington & Ocean Counties); 5-mile loop. Start at NJ-72, Woodland Township (call 609-296-1114 for precise location).

Traveling With Children – Within the US and Internationally

Whether traveling with your children or your grandchildren, travel should be a family affair, no matter what age the children are. With some additional preparation, planning, and knowledge, traveling internationally with children can be relatively painless. Here are some tips:

1. When entering the children’s ages on the reservation, make sure to enter the age that they will be on the first date of travel. This will make the reservation more accurate with regards to flights, hotel reservations and/or pricing within age groups. It’s best to have the full name as it appears on their passport and their date of birth at the time the reservation is made.

2. It’s important to know the airport’s amenities for both your departure and return airports. Some airports are making an effort to improve family experiences.

One way is the installation of nursing rooms or pods so moms and babies have a private place to nurse or pump when traveling. Some airports have installed playrooms or areas for children to keep occupied where they can burn some energy before getting on the plane. Other airports are adding quiet rooms for children on the autism spectrum to provide a calming place to go and are designed to help these children adjust to the travel environment before getting on the plane.

3. TSA rules will allow formula, breast milk and juice for infants in excess of 3.4 ounces in a carry-on bag, but you must notify the TSA Officers of it before they are screened. The TSA has a web page dedicated to traveling with children with more details.

4. When traveling with young children on an airplane, car seats are not required. If the child is less than two years old, they can sit on the lap of an adult free of charge, but may need documentation verifying their age. Children more than 40 pounds must have a ticket purchased for them and most airlines don’t require a car seat on the plane, though the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recommends them. A car seat must be provided for use in cars once you arrive at your destination. If you prefer to bring a car seat for the flight, it must be approved for use in both cars and airplanes. It will be stated on the car seat’s label. It’s always best to check with your airline to see what their requirements are.

5. It is important for all children to have passports,

especially if traveling internationally – even infants need a passport. Anyone under the age of 16 years old must apply for the passport in person with the consent of both parents/guardians. These passports are only valid for five years. Always remember that when traveling, most countries require at least six months before expiration on your passport from the date of departure to be valid. Be sure to check the expiration date when planning travel to make sure you have enough time in the event you need to renew.

Thank You for Being a Friend

Once you reach our age you have some good, loyal friends and many acquaintances. Mistakenly an acquaintance is often referred to as a friend. A true friend is a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection and a best friend is much more that all of that. At different stages of life we consider a different person to be our “best friend”. In our elementary school years it may have been the girl in our Girl Scout Troup or our teammate on our Little League squad. In high school perhaps it was a neighbor or a person who sat next to you in a variety of classes. During college days in could have been the person who shared your political views or enjoyed the same concerts. As a young adult maybe it was a colleague or a future spouse. Some of us have kept one of those friends from the day we met and that person is most likely our “best friend”. Most of us have that one close friend, the one that you can count on to be there for you, the one you want to share your secrets with, the one you want to do fun things with, the one with whom you want to just hang out.

June 8 celebrates National Best Friends Day, a day to honor that one special person you call your “best friend”. This day is a time to show them how much you appreciate them, how special and important they are to you and how you cherish their friendship. I have always agreed with Ralph Waldo Emerson’s idea of friendship, “The only way to have a friend is to be one.”Authors note: “Please read my Inquiring Photographer column on friends.”

Four Fun Facts

1. Human thigh bones are stronger than concrete. (Then why did I break a bone when I fell and the concrete didn’t crack?)

2. To produce a single pound of honey, a single bee would have to visit 2 million flowers. (All I have to do is visit Shop Rite.)

3. Earth is the only planet that is not named after a God. (That’s because many of its inhabitants think they are a God.)

4. The chance of you dying on the way to get lottery tickets is actually greater than your chance of winning. (I never liked playing the odds, I’ll go buy the ticket)

Legal Weed

As a young girl, I would assist my dad with his gardening and that’s why I still enjoy working with plants and my lawn. So, I must ask, what’s all this talk about making weed lawful? I have always been under the impression that crabgrass, dandelions, grubs and thatch were legal. They are weeds that most of us wish could be banned in every state.

Crabgrass, the weed everyone loves to hate, tops America’s list of lawn complaints. The best prevention is a healthy, thick lawn and soil with the proper pH balance (7.0-7.5). Perennial rye grass is the best opposition for this yet to be out-lawed intruder. Fertilizing in spring and fall along with aeration is also highly recommended.

Dandelions have a two-year life cycle. When they first appear as a basal foliage, dig them out with a vengeance. The ones you missed will return the second year as a flower. Eliminate them before they turn to seed because they will spread and restart their two-year cycle.

Grubs can be controlled by spraying each 1000 square feet of the lawn with a solution consisting of two tablespoons of liquid dishwashing soap diluted in a one-gallon container of water. The grubs will surface and serve as food for our feathery friends.

A spongy lawn indicates a thatch problem, a difficulty many Sea Breezers had to face last season. This tightly intermingled layer of dead and decaying vegetation causes brown patches and indicates a pH imbalance. Thatch is a problem in lawns previously treated with chemicals where the grass’s natural ability to decay has been destroyed. Dry thatch repels water, while wet thatch invites fungal diseases. These are just a few problems and suggested solutions for those who enjoy getting their exercise by working with nature.

Summer Solstice - June 21 stHere Comes the Sun- Dat En Dah Dah

This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-NC

The astronomical start of a season is based on the position of the Earth in relation to the Sun. More specifically, the start of each season is marked by either a solstice (for winter and summer) or an equinox (for spring and autumn). A solstice is when the Sun reaches the most southerly or northerly point in the sky, while an equinox is when the Sun passes over Earth’s equator. Because of leap years, the dates of the equinoxes and solstices can shift by a day or two over time, causing the start dates of the seasons to shift, too.

We have the four seasons because of shifting sunlight (not temperature!)—which is determined by how the Earth orbits the Sun and the tilt of our planet’s axis.

As the Earth progresses through its orbit, the tilt causes different parts of the Earth to be exposed to more or less sunlight, depending on whether we are tilted towards or away from the Sun. For us, it’s Pool Time!
